To
inside
Boulder
news,
I'm,
Natalie
Wood
starting
this
January
smokers
on
the
Pearl
Street
Mall
will
need
to
look
for
another
place
to
light
up.
City
Council
gave
unanimous
approval
Tuesday
night
to
ban
smoking
on
the
four
blocks
of
the
pedestrian
mall
and
the
boulder
county
courthouse
lawn
supporters
say
the
smoking
ban
will
significantly
reduce
litter
on
the
mall
and
help
protect
people
from
the
negative
health
effects
of
second-hand
smoke.
The
main
impetus
for.
C
This
was
following
up
on
council
priorities
from
the
retreat
last
year,
as
well
as
a
request
from
the
downtown
community
to
ban
smoking,
and
so
the
main
reason
for
it
is
the
public
health
impacts
of
secondhand
smoke,
and
this
is
the
Pearl
Street.
Mall
is
a
very
popular
and
populated
area
in
our
community
and
there
are
a
lot
of
people
that
gather
here.
So
the
potential
impacts
from
secondhand
smoke
are
substantial.
C
A
A
Council
also
discussed
the
passage
of
amendment
64
and
the
possible
implications
the
constitutional
measure
could
have
on
licensing.
The
city
currently
regulates
medical
marijuana
businesses,
but
some
say
the
amendment
could
pave
the
way
for
recreational
dispensaries
as
well.
City
Attorney,
Tom
car
says
there
is
a
lot
to
consider
over
the
next
few
months
and
council
is
committed
to
seeking
public
involvement
in
the
discussion.
The.
D
Public
should
be
assured
that
the
city
of
Boulder
is
anxious
to
implement
amendment
64
and
we
will.
The
city
Boulder
is
also
committed
to
protecting
the
health
and
safety
of
its
citizens,
and
we
have
to
balance
all
of
that.
One
of
the
things
that
people
talked
about
it
when
it
went
in
the
campaign
from
in
64
was
regulating
marijuana
like
alcohol.
Well,
we
actually
have
a
lot
of
experience
in
regulating
alcohol
and
we
know
about
a
lot
of
the
problems
that
can
create
they
can
create
from
having
alcohol
establishments
in
a
community.
D
We
want
to
make
sure
that
we
get
it
right
and
we
want
to
hear
from
the
public
about
how
we
can
get
it
right,
whether
they
voted
for
it
or
against
it,
whether
they
believe
it
it
or
not.
This
is
part
of
our
community
going
forward,
it's
part
of
the
state
constitution
and
we
want
to
make
sure
that
we
implemented
in
a
way
that
makes
sense
for
the
people,
the
community
of
boulder
city.
A
Staff,
consultants
and
community
members
are
hard
at
work,
conducting
a
detailed
analysis
about
the
potential
creation
of
a
municipal
electric
utility,
but
this
upcoming
tuesday,
some
of
the
discussion
will
shift
back
to
possible
alternatives.
The
city
issued
a
report
highlighting
some
of
the
ways
Boulder
might
be
able
to
partner
with
Xcel
Energy,
to
meet
the
community's
energy
goals.
The
report
is
intended
as
a
starting
point.
If
Xcel
Energy
is
interested
in
developing
a
proposal
around
these
or
other
opportunities,
the
topic
will
be
discussed
at
a
roundtable
meeting
in
council
chambers
on
December
11th.
A
You
can
read
the
city's
alternatives
report
online
at
Boulder,
energy
sure,
calm.
The
holiday
season
is
in
full
swing
and
this
time
of
year
in
Boulder
just
wouldn't
be
the
same
without
the
Flagstaff
star.
That
special
glow
doesn't
just
happen,
though.
Here's
a
look
at
what
it
takes
to
keep
the
star
shining
year
after
year,
Boulder
rights,
no
the
holiday
season
has
officially
begun
by
the
light
of
the
star
on
Flagstaff
Mountain.
Since
its
creation
in
1947,
the
star
shines
every
year
from
the
week
before
Thanksgiving
to
the
weekend
after
New
Year's
people.
F
Way
that
we
really
saw
the
outpouring
of
the
community's
connection
to
the
star
really
happened
in
1999
when
the
star
was
in
a
pretty
pretty
bad
state
of
disrepair,
and
it
was
going
to
take
a
significant
investment.
I
think
it
was
over
ten
thousand
dollars
to
actually
repair
the
star
and
make
sure
that
it's
still
shined
as
a
part
of
the
holiday
season
in
Boulder.
A
E
A
G
A
If
you
would
like
to
help
maintain
the
star
contact,
the
boulder
Chamber
of
Commerce
for
volunteer
opportunities,
the
Parks
and
Recreation
Department's
youth
services
initiative
program
is
teaming
up
with
Boulder
Fire
Rescue
to
brighten
local
children's
holidays.
Annual
youth
services
toy
drive
provides
youth
from
low-income
families
with
gifts
during
the
holiday
season.
For
some
children,
it's
the
only
holiday
gift.
They
are
likely
to
receive.
H
So
many
of
our
families
cannot
afford
to
put
food
on
the
table,
let
alone
buy
presents
for
Christmas
or
if
they
do,
there
are
really
small
things,
so
we
just
try
to
make
their
Christmases
a
little
brighter.
You
know
by
having
the
kids
write
letters
to
Santa
and
then
a
lot
of
the
kids.
You
know
still
believe,
and
so
they
actually
get
what
we
you
know
what
they
wrote
on
the
letter.
So
it's
a
pretty
great
event
y.
A
Si
will
host
to
holiday
parties
for
youth
and
their
families.
Last
year,
the
program
delivered
more
than
500
gifts
to
children.
If
you
