This week on Inside Boulder News: 2012 budget, basketball camps in Boulder, Valmont Bike Park award, 30th Street renovations and SWAT training.
A
Well,
there's
top
stories
this
week,
council
makes
a
final
decision
on
the
2012
budget.
Kids
get
the
opportunity
to
practice.
Basketball
like
the
Nuggets
and
Parks
and
Rec
receives
a
statewide
award
for
the
design
of
valmont
bike
park.
Hi
I'm,
Natalie
Wood,
the
city's
2012
budget,
got
full
speed
ahead
approval
from
City
Council
this
week.
The
239
million
dollar
budget
includes
a
three
percent
increase
in
revenues
and
a
three
point:
four
percent
increase
in
expenditures
compared
to
the
2011
budget.
A
It
also
allows
for
seven
million
dollars
in
proposed
expenditures
to
be
drawn
from
the
fund
balance
for
capital
improvements
and
one-time
expenses.
City
department
saved
this
money
in
the
fund
balance
to
pay
for
these
capital
improvements
in
one-time
expenses
in
2012,
while
the
budget
will
allow
for
some
hiring
for
critical
positions
in
the
city.
The
financial
plan
is
conservative,
reflecting
continued
wariness
about
the
nation's
recovering
economy.
The
only
change
council
made
was
to
cut
about
nine
thousand
dollars
in
annual
dues
to
the
boulder
Chamber.
A
Several
council
members
raised
concerns
about
the
appropriateness
of
providing
funding
to
an
organization
that
makes
political
endorsements.
The
chamber
broke
from
its
long-standing
tradition
of
not
endorsing
council
candidates
this
year,
despite
the
possible
conflict
of
interest
in
the
subsequently
reduced
funding.
Council
said
it
values
the
chamber
and
the
business
community
and
looks
forward
to
a
continued
and
fruitful
relationship
with
both
the
NBA
may
currently
be
in
lockout,
but
that
doesn't
mean
young
basketball.
Players
are
taking
a
break
from
the
game
as
well.
A
The
National
Basketball
Academy
hosts
Denver
Nuggets
basketball
camps
for
kids
throughout
the
colorado
area
and
boulder
is
currently
one
of
its
biggest
markets.
I
spoke
with
coach,
derek
Griffin
from
the
academy
about
the
professional
training
kids
receive
at
the
nuggets
camps.
They
may
be
little,
but
they
already
have
professional
on-court
technique
from
dribbling
with
their
heads
up
to
between
their
legs.
These
fifth
to
12th
graders
are
practicing
just
like
the
denver
nuggets
coach,
derek
from
the
National
Basketball
Academy
says
his
camps
are
run
similarly
to
a
nuggets,
basketball
practice.
B
Part
of
my
responsibility
is
to
go
to
practice
and
Deborah
next
practice
see
their
drills
their
practice
or
warm
ups.
Every
they're
stretching
all
the
way
down
to
that
and
implement
that
into
our
camps
and
Clinics.
We
make
it
as
Denver
Nuggets
as
possible
with
all
the
drills
in
game
like
situations
we
name
drills
after
you
know,
coaches
and
and
things
like
that,
so
I
learned
from
from
the
coaches
of
the
denver
nuggets
and
implement
that
into
our
into
our
programs.
The.
A
Nuggets
camps
are
run
throughout
Colorado
and
Wyoming
and
Boulder
has
been
one
of
the
cities
with
the
biggest
camp
attendance.
The
National
Basketball
Academy
believes
it's
important
for
kids
to
learn
fundamental
basketball
skills
at
an
early
age
that
will
stick
with
them
as
they
continue
to
develop
in
the
game.

on
saturday
and
along
with
the
hard
work
and
focus,
came
lots
of
improved
little
dribblers.
The
National
Basketball
Academy
runs
several
camps,
year-round
all
attendees
get

Derek
says
that
every
now
and
then
the
campers
even
get
a
special
visit
from
a
nuggets
player
or
coach.
A
The
award
was
presented
to
parks
and
recreation
director
Kirk
kincannon
and
recreation
superintendent,
Alice
Guthrie
at
the
CPR,
a

conference
in

park,
offers

and
features
for
all
ages
and
writing
abilities.
It
also
has
the
latest
sustainable
design
features
and
is
beep

A
Org
thirtieth
Street
also
recently
underwent
some
major
improvements
and
on
Monday,
the
community
met
to
celebrate
on
a
walking
tour
city
officials,
guided
the
tour
along
the
thirtieth
Street
corridor,
inviting
participants
to
explore
the
recent
enhancements
for
all
modes
of
transportation,
the
project
leveraged
state
and
federal
dollars.
Some
improvements
include
on-street
bike
lanes
from
Arapaho
to
Pearl
Street,
a
new
bridge
in
pedestrian
bicycle
underpass,
just
south
of
pearl
and
an
additional
left
turn
lane
at
Pearl
and
30th.
Mayor
Osborn
is
thrilled
that
the
recent
improvements
will
benefit
transportation
on
thirtieth
Street
for
years
to
come.
A
C
Idea
of
thinking
about
the
future
and
using
capital
projects
to
sort
of
express
what
we
want
our
future
to
be
like
and
I,
think
this
project,
which
we
call
Complete
Streets
making
30
at
the
complete
street,
is
exactly
on
the
mark.
By
Complete
Streets
we
mean
building
a
facility
that
works
for
everybody,
people
in
cars
sure,
but
also
people
walking
people
on
bikes
people
using
transit.
That
kind
of
thing-
and
in
fact
that's
what's
happened
to
30th
to.

If
you
saw
police
cars
and
SWAT
vehicles
near
17th
and
Athens
on
Wednesday,
there's
no
cause
for
alarm.
The
PD
SWAT
team
hostage,
negotiators
and
bomb
squad
were
participating
in
a
scenario-based
training
exercise
inside
an
area
building.
The
police
department
believes
that
preparedness
and
training
are
key
to
responding
effectively
to
emergency
situations,
the
SWAT
and
bomb
team
trained
frequently.
A
While
some
of
these
training
occur
in
non-public
places,
the
department
recognizes
the
value
of
conducting
scenarios
out
in
the
real
life
community.
The
team
members
may
be
called
upon
to
serve
the
department
makes
a
point
of
advising
the
community
about
these
activities
in
advance.
That's
all
the
time
we
have
for
this
week.
