hi,
I'm
natalie
wood,
the
city
of
boulder
has
a
long
tradition
of
working
to
create
a
sustainable
and
energy-efficient
city
and
on
august,
fifteenth
congressman
jared
Polis
joined
city
and
state
officials
at
CU,
as
co-host
of
a
congressional
field.
A
Hearing
on
energy
speakers
and
panelists
testified
about
ways
that
a
community
can
benefit
economically
for
moving
toward
energy
sustainability
and
on
how
the
federal
government
can
best
partner
with
communities
like
Boulder.
The
field
hearing
consisted
of
two
panels,
one
that
provided
local
perspectives
about
innovations
and
energy
sustainability
and
their
associated
challenges.
The
other
offered
national
perspectives
about
whether
these
initiatives
can
be
replicated
across
the
country.
A
In
addition
to
congressman
polis
participants,
included,
senator
mark
Udall,
Senator,
Michael
Bennet
and
former
governor
bill
Ritter
following
the
field
hearing
the
city
of
Boulder
celebrated
recent
initiatives
that
are
helping
save
money
with
renewable
and
sustainable
technology.
The
August
fifteenth
green
ovation
celebration
event
took
place
at
south
boulder
rec
center,
where
energy
innovations
have
become
part
of
the
daily
routine.
I
was
there
for
inside
boulder
news
to
see
how
the
center
is
using
innovative
solar
technology
and
to
check
out
the
first
two
electric
vehicle
charging
stations
in
Boulder.
A
The
city
has
been
working
towards
the
use
of
sustainable
technology
for
many
years
and
on
August
fifteenth,
the
city
of
Boulder
and
its
partners
took
a
moment
to
celebrate
their
success
at
saving
green.
The
green
ovation
celebration
at
south
boulder
rec
center
allowed
officials
to
talk
about
the
many
accomplishments
Boulder
has
achieved
on
its
journey
and
the
money
the
city
saves
by
using
solar
energy.
It.
B
Really
is
a
wonderful
time
when
a
lot
of
projects
that
have
been
in
the
world
for
a
couple
of
years
are
now
coming
full
circle
to
fruition,
and
all
of
us
and
City
Council
believes
so
strongly
that
the
city
needs
to
lead
in
these
efforts,
and
we
need
to
have
visible
examples.
We
need
to
have
metrics
that
show
the
savings,
and
in
this
case
the
savings
will
be
about
five
hundred
thousand
a
year.
The
south

A
C
Private
companies
putting
up
the
money
for
it
and
the
city
is
paying
for
it
over
time
through
the
savings
that
we
get
on
our
bill
and
and
I
think
this
is
a
great
model
that
could
be
duplicated
in
other
cities
that
we
really
should
be
proud
of
started.
We've
always
talked
about
using
photovoltaics
to
charge
vehicles,
and
this
is
a
great
example
of
that.
We're
we're
essentially
charging
these
electric
vehicles
with
the
electricity
we're
making
on
site.
C
A
Charging
stations
at
south
boulder
rec
center
are
the
first
in
the
city,
and
residents
can
expect
to
see
about
40
more
popping
up
over
the
next
six
months,
along
with
the
ceremonial
plugging
in
at
those
new
charging
stations.
The
celebration
also
included
two
ribbon
cuttings
for
the
solar,
photovoltaic
and
solar
thermal
systems
at
the
Recreation
Center.
A
The
city
of
Boulder
is
committed
to
making
continued
use
of
renewable
and
sustainable
technology
to
achieve
both
environmental
and
economic
goals.
Now
Boulder
voters
will
get
a
say
about
whether
the
city
should
take
this
commitment.
A
step
further
on
August,
sixteenth,
City
Council
approved
two
ballot
measures
related
to
the
possible
creation
of
a
local
electric
utility.
As
a
result
of
a
unanimous
decision,
voters
will
be
asked
whether
to
authorize
the
creation
of
a
locally
run
electric
utility.
The
ballot
question
includes
some
limitations.
A
Council
will
not
be
permitted
to
issue
bonds
to
purchase
xcel
energy's
distribution
system
until
all
startup
costs
are
finalized.
They
would
also
be
required
to
show
that
customer
rates
would
be
no
more
than
those
charged
by
excel
at
the
time
of
acquisition.
Voters
will
also
be
asked
to
consider
extending
and
increasing
the
utility
occupation
tax
for
a
limited
amount
of
time
to
fund
the
costs
associated
with
determining
those
final
startup
expenses
and
taking
other
interim
steps
necessary
to
set
up
a
local
utility
energy.
A
Isn't
the
only
issue
council
will
be
asking
voters
to
weigh
in
on
council
voted
to
seek
approval
for
49
million
dollars
in
bonds
to
catch
up
on
significant
deficiencies
in
the
city's
infrastructure.
These
capital
improvement
projects
could
include
repairing
and
maintaining
streets,
addressing
structurally
deficient
bridges,
repairing
aging
city
facilities
and
replacing
outdated
software
systems
if
approved,
to
the
capital
improvement
bonds
would
be
paid
for
through
existing
revenues
without
any
increase
in
taxes.
