Description
This week on Inside Boulder News: Enthusiastic kids weigh in on new healthy ice cream treats at city pools; Boulder Fire-Rescue creates a safety checklist families can use at home; and the city reaches out to the community as visioning begins for the old Boulder Community Health site
A
A
Older
news,
I'm
Ashley
Pro,
civic
involvement
is
alive
and
well
in
the
city
of
Boulder,
as
two
young
boys
proved
once
again
that
every
voice
matters
the
issue,
one
that
was
near
and
dear
to
their
hearts
ice
cream.
Recently,
the
city's
Parks
and
Recreation
Department
decided
to
stop
selling
two
ice
cream,
treats
that
were
high
in
calories
at
public
outdoor
swimming
pools.
The
decision
was
based
on
a
desire
to
promote
healthy
snack
choices
like
frozen
yogurt,
trees
and
fruit
popsicles.
It
was
in
line
with
changes.
A
B
C
Lobster
top
doesn't
so
much
like
to
write
so
I
thought
what
a
great
idea
to
give
him
something
to
kind
of
you
know,
practices
writing
skills
over
the
summer
and
we
included
Thomas's
name
too,
even
though
he
was
more
talking
not
necessarily
doing
the
writing
part
and
we
sent
it
in
thinking.
Okay.
Well,
maybe
in
the
very
least
I'll
get
printed
in
the
daily
camera,
but
it's
definitely
blown
up
and
become
more
than
we
thought
it
would
be,
and
hopefully
him
you
know
both
of
them
using
their
voice.
D
We
thought
what
a
great
opportunity
to
engage
youth
and
some
decision-making
around
their
local
government
and
what
services
were
providing.
We
invited
the
gafford
boys,
as
well
as
the
top
five
kid
visitors
from
the
city
of
boulder
in
the
month
of
june,
to
spruce
and
scott
Carpenter
pool.
So
today
we
had
a
total
of
six
kids
tasting
ate,
treats
four
of
them
were
dairy
based
ice
cream,
treats
ice
cream,
sandwiches
scooters
and
the
other
for
war
either.
D
B
C
Were
definitely
a
ice
cream,
connoisseur,
my
family
and
and
the
boys
certainly,
but
we're
also
very
active.
So
we
agree
with
the
city,
like
you
know,
get
out
there,
reactive
and
just
a
great
city.
You
know
to
do
those
things,
but
certainly
it's
okay
to
indulge
you
know,
and
especially
at
the
pool
when
your.
E
A
The
end
of
the
session,
the
clear-cut
winner
from
the
kids,
was
a
Hershey
ice
cream
chocolate
scooter,
a
chocolate
bar
on
a
stick
covered
and
cookie
crunch
on
the
outside.
The
scooter
will
be
available
to
pull
patrons
as
soon
as
it
can
be
delivered.
Number
two
is
a
so
delicious
coconut
milk
chocolate
fudge
bar
which
will
be
considered
for
future
seasons
at
the
city
pools
in
an
effort
to
connect
with
the
community
outside
of
911,
the
city
of
Boulder
Fire
Rescue
Department,
recently
developed
a
home
safety
survey.
F
Often
times
when
our
firefighters
are
out
on
calls
after
the
emergency
part
is
over,
we
do
talk
to
home
owners
and
residents
about
things
they
can
do
to
keep
themselves
safe.
So
we
decided
to
formalize
this
informal
process
and
create
a
home
safety
survey
as
a
partnership
with
the
community
to
help
them
keep
themselves
safe
ahead
of
time.
The.
A
F
A
fire
happens:
we
want
people
to
be
able
to
have
two
ways
out
of
their
house.
For
us,
getting
everybody
out
safe
and
sound
is
a
number
one
priority.
So
we
put
that
on
there
first
and
then
the
address
of
the
house
number
is
visible
from
the
street
having
that
address
visible
from
the
road,
whether
you
need
to
cut
back
or
trim
limbs
or
trees,
or
even
changing
the
numbering
on
your
house.
F
The
third
one
is
home,
has
working
smoke,
alarms
on
every
level
and
in
every
bedroom
and
sleeping
area,
and
then,
along
with
that,
they
have
working
carbon
monoxide
alarms
if
they
need
those
so
being
able
to
have
an
early
alert
system
to
a
fire
that
starts
small
and
again
get
out
safely
or
be
able
to
use
a
fire
extinguisher
and
put
it
out
so
and
then
one
more
one.
More
final,
really
quick
and
easy
safety
tip
that
people
can
incorporate
into
their
daily
lives
is
sign
up
for
emergency
messaging.
F
Unfortunately,
as
we're
all
aware,
we
had
a
wildfire
here
in
Boulder
recently,
and
with
that
you
know
people
can
sign
up
for
emergency
messaging
ahead
of
time,
so
if
they
need
to
be
pre
evacuated,
you
know
our
two
risks
or
wild
fire
and
blood.
So
if
they
need
to
be
pre
evacuated
or
some
you
know,
there's
a
certain
weather
pattern
that
may
cause
creeks
and
streams
to
flood.
They
had
that
information
available
ahead
of
time.
Also,
where
you
know
evacuation
places
are
located
where
to
take
pet,
those
will
all
be
in
the
emergency
messaging.
F
So
again,
you
know
we.
We
would
love
people
to
do
home
safety
surveys
to
be
able
to
complete
this,
because
it's
our
community,
we
all
live
in
the
same
community
together
we
want
the
community
to
be
as
safe
as
they
can
take
steps
proactively
to
keep
themselves
their
family
safe.
Instead
of
having
to
be
reactive
when
calling
911
home.
A
Safety
surveys
are
available
online
and
at
all
Boulder
fire
stations
for
questions
about
the
survey
contact.
The
community
Risk
Reduction
division
folder
both
some
of
the
most
eco-friendly
building
codes
in
the
country
and
these
apply
to
rental
properties,
which
represent
about
half
of
boulders
total
housing,
stock,
boulders
rental,
housing,
energy
efficiency
programs.
Smart
regs
recently
reached
a
key
performance
milestone
with
more
than
13,000
units.
Approximately
sixty
six
percent
of
builders
license
rental
housing
stock
reaching
or
working
toward
compliance.
E
Regs
was
designed
to
help
bring
the
city
closer
to
its
climate
goals
and
enhance
the
quality
of
our
rental
housing
here
in
Boulder.
So
in
regards
to
rental
licensing,
smart
regs
applies
to
all
standard
rental
licenses
and
currently
any
rental
license
that
has
not
reached
smart
regs.
Compliance
will
only
have
a
license
extended
through
December
31st
2018.
As
of
January
2019,
all
properties
will
need
to
meet
that
base
level
of
energy
efficiency
to
be
able
to
receive
a
rental
license,
or
we
knew
their
rent
license.
So.
G
What
steps
to
take
upgrades
might
need
to
be
done
and
usually
I
typically
see
even
a
couple
years
of
working
through
the
process.
Depending
on
how
many
upgrades
there
are
that
need
to
be
completed
to
reach
compliance.
The
point
of
the
inspection
is
really
just
evaluate
the
property,
and
then
the
city
has
provided
assistance
through
the
energy
smart,
advising
program
to
really
make
sure
you're,
not
alone
in
the
process.
For.

The
city's
website
in
December
2015,
the
city
of
Boulder,
purchased
the
boulder
community
hospital
Broadway
campus
site
across
from
north
boulder
park.
Now
the
city
is
beginning
the
first
phase
of
planning
for
redevelopment
of
the
8.8
acre
site
since.
H
Early
in
2016
we've
been
working
to
engage
the
community
to
let
them
know
about
the
purchase
of
the
hospital
and
to
make
sure
that
people
are
aware
of
where
they
can
go
to
get
more
information,
and
part
of
that
is
also
learning
about
the
community
in
the
surrounding
neighborhood
for
this
site.
So
we've
been
involved
in
a
storytelling
campaign
right
now
to
get
asked
people
what
their
thoughts
are
about,
this
neighborhood,
what
they
like
about
it.
H
What
are
their
memories
and
stories
from
this
neighborhood
and
what
are
their
stories
and
memories
from
interacting
with
the
hospital
and
the
businesses
in
this
community?
It's
going
to
be
a
multi-year
process,
it's
just
getting
started.
So
what
we?
What
we've
actually
just
started,
is
the
first
phase
of
the
planning
process.
H
We're
also
the
city
is
also
looking
at
using
a
portion
of
this
space
for
the
site
for
facilities
and
for
rethinking
municipal
service
delivery,
and
so
the
community
is
going
to
be
engaged
in
a
series
of
events
on
to
find
out
how
they
interact
with
their
government
and
what
they'd
like
to
see
from
city
government,
and
all
of
that
will
be
used
to
inform
a
broad
framework
for
developing
city
facilities.
It
both
here
on
VCF
site,
as
well
as
in
the
Civic
area
and
beyond.
