From YouTube: Mayor's Out of School Time Summit
Description
Mayor Jennifer Roberts convenes a summit on out of school time to begin to create public/private partnerships for middle and high school programs.
A
Today,
I
am
hosting
and
out-of-school
time
summit
that
is
focusing
on
how
we
continue
to
grow
capacity
for
our
use
in
that
time,
when
they're
not
in
school.
This
includes
not
just
after
school
programs,
tutoring
arts
in
Richmond,
but
also
summer
programs
and
youth
employment.
We
have
here
a
number
of
folks
from
the
business
community
for
the
nonprofit
sector
for
the
public
sector,
academia.
All
the
folks
are
gathered
here.
They
talk
about
the
importance
of
at
a
school
time.
Parents
are
very
concerned
teachers
are
concerned.
A
They
know
that
there
are
a
lot
of
hours
that
you
have
to
get
in
trouble
if
they
don't
have
positive
program
to
turn.
23
26
is
when
kids
have
that
opportunity
to
really
get
into
things
and
make
decisions
that
don't
allow
for
a
good
outcome.
So
we're
talking
today
about
the
urgency
of
the
need
and
how
we
can
move
forward
as
a
community
to
provide
more
access
and
more
opportunities
for
our
young
people,
and
we
know
this
hits
a
number
of
positive
areas.
We
know
that
it
helps
reduce
crime.
A
We
know
that
it
keeps
are
used
on
the
track
in
their
grades.
Reading
on
grade
level
keeps
them
in
school,
they
have
higher
graduation
rates
when
they
have
positive
out
of
school
time
experiences.
We
also
know
that
it
helps
prepare
our
workforce
for
your
future.
Then
we
want
to
build
capacity
by
finding
people
in
the
community
who
can
give
their
time
to
starting
this
initiative
to
really
supporting
it.
A
We
also
want
our
business
partners
to
help
fund
it
to
help
us
find
grants
in
ways
that
we
can
again
provide
more
of
those
low-cost
programs
to
our
use.
So
today
is
Roy
the
start.
It's
a
conversation
we're
getting
feedback
from
the
community.
We
want
to
continue
this
and
to
launch
a
whole
new
effort
in
Charlotte
that
is
going
to
help.
All
of
our
use
have
quality
access
to
after-school
programs.
