Description
The Legacy Commission has been charged with engaging in a comprehensive study of street names and monuments in the City of Charlotte that honor a legacy of Confederate soldiers, slaveowners and segregationists. Study will include a detailed historical explanation of the naming and a detailed historical explanation of all recommended changes by the end of October 2020.
The community engagement process will inform the final determination of any recommended changes presented by the Commission. City Council and other authorizing bodies will adopt the final recommendation and timeframe for implementation. All street name changes and monument name changes will begin a new history that is inclusive of contributions made by our country’s most worthy citizens.

through

approve

that
an
address
change
can

norm
is
part
of
a
normal
process
for
people
who
move
anyway,

for
those

us

often

a
nuisance.

nuisance

change

so
we
don't
want
to
place
a
burden
on
folks
who
you

aren't
equipped
necessarily

financially
prepared
to
take

on.

responsible

maintaining
our
public
cemeteries.

think

have

about
where
things
were
done,
so

just
wanted

provide
that
context
that
it
was
done
not
too
long
ago,
but
obviously
quite
a
bit
has
changed
even
since
then,

that
was
the
context.

there
are,

markers

were
dedicated
by
local
groups,

a

one

first
ones,

confederate
states
of
america
that
honors
the
mecklenburg
guards

the
civil
war
as
a
49th
regiment,
and
it
was
erected
or
dedicated
in
2001..

up

two
criteria
that
everyone
agreed
on,
that
the
highest
priority
would
be
given

the
street's
name
for
confederate
leaders

officers

individuals
who
actively
fought

equality.
By
advocating
for
white
supremacy
and
last
meeting,
we
did
a
poll
and
from
that
poll
the
names
that
are
listed
are
the
ones
that
surfaced
because
they
were
associated
with
confederate
leaders
or
leaders
of
white
supremacist
campaigns.

was
much
less
agreement
on
the
whole
issue
of
just
of
slave
owners
as
such,
so
I
think
that
that
what
we
need
to
do
is
really
have
a
fuller
discussion
about
different
different
groups
of
street
names.

and

have
uncovered
and
want

back

article

came
from
a
september,
11th
1947,
charlotte
observer
newspaper,
that
that
was
an
interview
with
barringer
one
of
the
behringer
children
who
suggested
that
jackson
street.

is
also

jackson
avenue
off

east
10th
street
that
is
adjacent
to
piedmont,
ib
middle
school.

is

after

behringer
and
found
two
things.
One
is
that
in
1900
he
was
one
of
the
main
leaders
of
the
big
white
supremacy
campaign
rally
that
gathered
thousands
of
people
in
the
the
principle

white
supremacy
right
before
the

big
election
of
1900.
