Clean
City
crash
course
is
an
introduction
to
understanding
local
government
city
tools
and
resources.
Today
we
will
cover
city,
County,
government,
basics,
Community,
Engagement
resources,
resources
available
to
you
and
your
neighbors
and
next
steps.
First,
we'll
learn
about
city,
county
and
government
basics.
A
There
are
several
levels
of
government
and
operate
in
our
area.
We
are
served
by
the
federal
government,
the
state
government,
Mecklenburg
County
and
municipal
governments.
Additionally,
charlotte-mecklenburg
schools
and
other
intergovernmental
organizations
operate
every
day.
Let's
take
a
closer
look
at
what
some
of
these
governing
bodies
are
responsible
for
state.
Some
of
the
state's
primary
responsibilities
are
education,
funding,
a
judicial
system,
environmental
and
Natural,
Resources
highways
and
state
prisons.
Charlotte
operates
under
a
council-manager
form
of
government
that
divides
local
government
duties
between
elected
officials
in
an
appointed
city
manager.
A
There
are
seven
council
representatives,
four
at-large
council
members
and
one
mayor.
The
mayor's
primary
responsibilities
are
to
preside
over
city
council
meetings
represent
the
city
at
special
ceremonies
and
events.
The
mayor
is
also
generally
responsible
for
the
execution
of
local
laws.
The
City
Council
adopts
policy
approves
the
financing
of
all
city
operations
and
acts,
ordinances,
resolutions
and
orders
appoints
the
city
manager,
city
attorney,
city
clerk
and
members
of
boards
and
commissions.
Lastly,
the
city
manager
administers
policy
and
budget.
They
also
run
the
day-to-day
operations
of
the
city
government.
A
Next,
we'll
take
a
look
at
the
difference
between
city
and
county
responsibilities.
Here
you
see
the
Mecklenburg
County

A
Next,
we
will
look
at
how
you
can
interact
with
the
City
Council.
The
city
is
divided
into
seven
council
districts.
If
you
would
like
to
learn

you

in

include
health

government
and

A
Community
engagement
also
supports
neighborhoods
by
helping
them
to
get
organized.
There
are
several
benefits
of
organizing
your
neighborhood.
An
organized
neighborhood
helps
build
neighborhood
identity,
promote
unity
within
your
group,
create
partnerships
with
government,
businesses,
partners
and
other
neighborhoods,
and
it
offers
additional
access
to
resources.
A
Another
way
that
we
support
neighborhoods
is
through
the
community
engagement
service
area
teams,
service

provide
support
to
communities
and

They
help
neighborhoods
with
problem-solving
and
capacity-building.
They
connect
neighborhoods
to
departments
and
partners.
They
support
individual
neighborhoods
through
advocacy
and
information
sharing
and,
lastly,
they
support
area
wide
organizations
and
initiatives.
A
Another
valuable
resource
is

neighborhoods
implements
self-determine

and
many
more
another
great
opportunity
for
neighborhoods
to
come
together
is
for
them
to
participate
in
the
neighborhood
board.
Retreat
the
neighborhood
board
retreat
is
a
free,

that
occurs
twice
