From YouTube: The Story of the Mayflower
Description
We all learned about the voyage of the Mayflower in 1620 and the founding of Plymouth Colony in school but who were these people, why did they come to New England, and what was the voyage really like? This presentation will explore these topics and more. Presented by the Aging Well Center.
A
We
tend
to
only
think
about
the
pilgrims
who
came
over
on
the
mayflower
as
a
single
group
who
all
came
for
the
same
reason,
but
that
wasn't
actually
the
case.
There
were
two
groups
of
passengers
aboard
the
ship,
those
who
have
come
to
be
known
as
the
strangers
and
those
that
we
can
think
of
as
the
separatists.
A
A
A
A
This
was
a
period
of
low
farm
yields
and
high
population,
so
times
were
tough
and
there
were
very
few
opportunities
for
people
unless
they
were
already
wealthy.
To
begin
with,
and
most
of
the
pilgrims
that
were
talking
about
were
not
wealthy,
they
were
able
to
look
across
to
the
country
of
holland
nearby.
A
A
Although
the
pilgrims
came
from
several
different
areas
in
england,
they're
most
closely
associated
with
the
town
of
scrooby,
which
is
located
approximately
here
on
the
map,
when
you
look
to
see
where
they
went,
which
was
amsterdam
in
nearby
holland,
you
can
see
that
they
didn't
actually
travel.
That
far.
A
A
It
was
difficult
to
find
work,
so
what
most
of
them
found
was
low-level
very
difficult
work
with
long
hours
which
led
to
poor
living
and
working
conditions
and
yet
again
few
opportunities
to
advance
in
later
writings.
They
also
talked
about
their
concern
for
their
children,
because
the
group
was
so
poor.
A
A
A
They
also
wanted
to
bolster
their
claims
to
the
new
world.
At
this
point,
the
only
successful
english
colony
on
the
north
american
mainland
was
jamestown
and
they
needed
to
get
more
people
over
as
english
colonists
in
order
to
hold
the
land
that
they
claimed.
So
they
were
desperate
enough
to
take
just
about
anyone
for
the
pilgrims.
A
A
A
A
A
Unfortunately,
the
speed
well
kept
leaking
after
two
failed
attempts
to
leave
england
and
make
their
way
across
the
atlantic.
The
two
ships
finally
put
into
port
at
plymouth
in
england
to
try
to
repair
the
speed.
Well,
these
delays
started
to
use
up
the
provisions
that
the
pilgrims
had
purchased
to
use
during
the
voyage
and
the
earliest
days
of
the
settlement.
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
They
found
an
encampment
with
two
houses
and
more
corn
and
graves
this
time
they
took
not
only
the
corn,
but
they
looted
the
graves
and
the
houses
for
anything
that
they
found
useful
again.
They
were
not
making
a
good
first
impression
back
aboard
the
ship
on
december
4th,
another
passenger,
edward
thompson
dies
and
the
second
of
the
pregnant
women
gives
birth
to
a
son
named
peregrine
white
on
december
6th.
A
The
expedition
saw
another
group
of
natives
on
the
beach
who
yet
again
fled
from
them
aboard
the
ship.
A
young
servant
named
jasper
moore
dies
the
next
day,
dorothy
bradford,
the
wife
of
future
governor
william
bradford,
dies
after
falling
overboard
and
drowning.
While
the
ship
was
anchored
in
the
harbor
on
december,
8th
james
chilton,
another
one
of
the
passengers
dies
that
same
day,
the
members
of
the
expedition
were
attacked
by
a
group
of
native
americans
who
shot
arrows
at
them
from
the
tree
line.

Only
after
years
of
enslavement
was
he
able
to
return
to
his
home
only
to
find
out
that
most
or
all
of
his
family
and
village
had
been
wiped
out
in
the
recent
plague.
While
he
was
gone,
he
set
up
a
meeting
between
the
sachem
or
leader
of
the
wampanoag
that
we
come
to
know
as
massasoit,
whose
name
was
osamikun.
