This
message
was
delivered
by
u.s
major
general
gordon
granger,
when
he
issued
general
order
number

which
informed
the
people
of
texas
that
all
enslaved
people
were
now
free,
as
ordered
by
president
lincoln.
The
years
followed.
1865
friedman
in
texas
organized
the
first
of
what
became
an
annual
celebration
of
jubilee
day
on
june
19th
in
the
ensuing
decades
june.
10Th
short
for
june

commemorations,
featuring
music,
barbecues
prayer
vigils
and
services

migrated
from
texas
to
other
parts
of
the
country.
B
Juneteenth
tradition,
spread
across
the
country
as
well
in
the
celebration
of
freedom.
Juneteenth
is
a
day
that
should
be
recognized
by
all
americans
and
that's
why
in
columbus?
That's
why,
in
june
of
2021
president
joe
biden,
consecrated
juneteenth
as
our
newest
national
holiday
year
marks
the
continual
celebration
of
the
juneteenth
celebration
in
columbus
georgia,
this
year's
event
is
chaired
by
councilwoman
toya
tucker
and
civic
center
director
rob
landers.
B
B
B
The
freedmen
are
advised
to
remain
quietly
at
their
present
homes
and
work
for
wages.
They
are
informed
that
they
will
not
be
allowed
to
collect
military
posts
and
that
they
will
not
be
supported
in
idleness,
either
there
or
elsewhere
order
by
general,
granger
and
now
to
share
the
proclamation
that
was
drafted
recognizing
juneteenth
here
in
columbus.
Please
welcome
councilwoman
of
district
4,
vistoya
tucker
and.
B
C
Good
morning
and
thank
you
for
being
here,
the
proclamation
reads,
whereas
on
june
19
1865
the
words
of
the
emancipation
proclamation
and
so
in
the
surrender
of
confederate
general
robert
e
lee
to
union
general
ulysses.
S
grant
officially
reached
enslaved
people
of
galveston
texas
and
whereas,
once
arriving
in
galveston
union
general
gordon
granger
delivered
his
general
order.
Number
three,
which
reads
the
people
of
texas
are
informed
that,
in
accordance
with
a
proclamation
from
the
executive
of
the
united
states,
all
slaves
are
free.
C
D
We
are
really
excited
about
what
this
year
is
going
to
bring
and
what
this
event
is
going
to
bring.
When
I
tell
you
our
meetings
are
it's
just
filled
with
ideas
and
just
involvement
from
everybody
in
our
community.
This
is
going
to
be
great,
so
let
me
tell
you
a
little
bit
about
what
to
expect
during
the
week
of
juneteenth
on.
First,
it
will
start
off.
On
tuesday
we
will
have
a
press
conference,
an
interactive
press
conference
on
tuesday
june,
the
14th
one
that
you
have
never
seen
before.
D
Please
make
sure
that
you
attend
on
wednesday
june
the
15th.
We
will
have
an
historical
experience.
We
will
talk
about
history
right
here
at
the
military
library,
but
we're
going
to
do
it
in
a
way
that
you
can
feel
it
and
experience
it
not
just
hear
it.
So,
please
make
sure
you
attend
that
event
as
well.
D
On
thursday
june
the
16th
we
will
have
a
night
of
art
and
culture.
We
will
have
an
enlightening,
exhibit
that
you
you
all
just
wait
till
you
see
this
art,
art,
culture
and
fashion.
I'm
sorry
fashion
is
going
to
be
the
key
for
that
night.
Wait
till
you
see
how
this
exhibitor
has
put
together
history
with
in
a
way
that
you
can
see
it.
So
it's
like
watching
a
movie,
but
it's
still
and
for
you
to
see
everything,
that's
that's
happening.
It's
going
to
be
wonderful!
D
On
friday,
we
are
going
to
join
with
sisters
united
for
their
annual
juneteenth
western
dance
if
you've
never
attended
before.
Please
make
sure
this
is
the
year
you
go,
they
have
done
it
every
year
for
over
17
years
on
saturday,
all
roads
lead
to
the
civic
center.
For
a
day
of
jubilee,
the
day
will
be
filled
with
cultural
exhibits,
a
stage
full
of
experiences
of
all
kinds.
Everyone
will
find
something
that
they
like
that
day
will
move
into
later.
In
the
afternoon
we
will
have
a
family
day.
D
Music
festival
concert
where
you
will
have
an
opportunity
to
hear
all
kinds
of
music
and
celebration
of
black
music
month
and
please
be
on
the
lookout
for
the
artist
to
be
announced.
I
think
you
will
be
pleased
oh,
and
that
night
has
a
surprise.
Our
councilwoman
has
a
surprise
for
us
at
the
end
of
that
night
as
well,
and
then
on
sunday
we
will
come
together
again
for
an
old-fashioned
sunday
church
homecoming.
D
D
D
This
event
is
going
to
be
put
on
not
by
one
person,
not
by
two
people
by
by
our
entire
community.
We
need
every
last
person
in
this
community
to
participate,
be
involved.
We
want
you
to
come
and
enjoy
it,
but
find
a
part.
You
can
also
be
involved
in
helping
to
create.
This
is
a
part.
This
is
part
of
what
juneteenth
is
about.
It
is
about
our
community,
coming
together,
to
celebrate,
to
celebrate
our
accomplishments,
to
remember
our
history
and
to
celebrate
our
accomplishments
and,
as
the
title
says,
to
look
towards
our
destiny.
Thank
you.
B
Yeah
as
janiece
was
just
alluding
to,
there
are
lots
of
opportunities
and
ways
for
people
to
volunteer
and
so
councilman
toria
tucker
will
come
back
to
talk
about
those
opportunities
for
the
community.
C
Volunteers
are
the
driving
force
behind
anything
that
we
do
in
our
community
and,
as
I
stand
here
before
you
all
of
you,
you
know
have
volunteered
to
be
on
the
committee,
and
I
appreciate
you
from
my
my
dear
grimes
family
that
actually
came
up
from
the
diaspora
to
our
destiny.
C
C
You
is
the
information
on
in
reference
to
how
you
can
sign
up
in
reference
to
volunteers
in
reference
to
vendors,
but
we
need
volunteers,
we're
going
to
need
volunteers
for
each
and
every
day
this
is
going
to
be
a
spectacular
event
and,
as
janice
alluded
to
is
something
that
you
have
never
seen
before
and
as
my
my
dear
brother,
rob,
scott
and,
and
also
us
who
are
the
geniuses
behind
the
spectacular
press
conference
that
you
all
are
going
to
see
at
the
civic
center.
I
just
want
y'all
to
be.
There
spread
the
word.
C
It's
going
to
be
amazing,
but
please
reach
out
to
individuals
within
your
community
within
your
social
groups,
with
whatever
organizations
you
have
and
ask
them
to
volunteer,
because
we
we
have
a
lot
in
store
and
we're
going
to
need
a
lot
of
people.
So
I
truly
appreciate
you
and
rob
landers
director
of
the
civic
center
will
give
you
the
information
on
signing
up
for
both
the
volunteers
and
the
vendors.
E
Good
morning,
everyone-
and
this
has
been
exciting-
we
have
started
the
committee
has
gathered.
We
started
back
in
august
of
september
of
last
year
and
so
august
of
last
year,
so
we
are
looking
forward
to
this,
and
this
is
historic.
Guys,
like
the
meetings
have
just
been
so
fruitful,
they
have
been
positive
and
why
this
is
historic
is
because
we
are
doing
this
as
an
entire
city
right.
We
have
various
organizations
from
all
over
and
if
you
haven't
heard
about
it
yet
and
nobody
notified
you,
this
is
your
opportunity.
E
E
So
later,
today,
at
about
12
to
1
o'clock,
the
juneteenth
city,
the
columbus
civic
center's
juneteenth
presents
website
will
be
live
so
give
us
about
a
couple
more
hours
and
it'll
be
live
and
you'll
be
able
to
go
on
to
the
ccg
website
and
be
able
to
go
to
the
link
to
find
the
juneteenth
celebration
as
well
as
our
facebook
page
is
now
live.
It
is
the
civic
center
presents
the
unity
week
and
juneteenth
jubilee,
so
we
are
looking
for
vendors.
E
We
want
to
have
a
full
representation
for
food
arts
fashion,
whatever
it
is
that
you
have,
you
can
go
online
to
the
website
and
apply
on
the
vendor
application.
But
in
the
meantime,
if
you
have
any
additional
questions,
you
can
email
us
directly
at
june
juneteenth
at
columbusga.org.
That's
juneteenth.columbusga.
E
I'm
sorry
juneteenth
at
columbusga.org,
so
again
in
about
a
couple
hours,
the
website
will
be
live,
our
facebook
is
live.
We
have
various
committee
members
that
are
here.
Thank
you,
miss
bunn,
for
allowing
us
to
be
here
in
the
courtyard
at
mildred,
terry
library,.
E
And
again,
the
goal
is
for
us
to
really
come
together
and
celebrate.
You
know
our
culture,
the
history,
the
arts,
the
fashion,
and
we
just
can't
thank
you
guys
enough
for
being
here
today
and
I'm
so
excited.
If
you
have
ideas,
have
more
questions
more
concerns,
please
feel
free
to
reach
out
to
us.
Thank
you.
B
B
F
Thank
you
guys,
good
morning,
man.
This
is
really
a
neat
day.
First
of
all,
I
want
to
recognize
a
couple
of
our
counselors
that
are
here:
council,
woman,
charmaine
crabbe
from
district
five
and,
of
course,
councilor
john
house
and
his
lovely
wife.
F
John,
is
the
at-large
one
of
the
two
at-large
representatives
here
and
we
do
want
to
thank
miss
bunn
and
alan
harkness
from
the
library
system
for
for
allowing
us
to
meet
this
in
this
wonderful
location,
and
I
want
to
thank
two,
of
course,
rob
rob
landers
and
councillor
toyah
tucker,
who
have
really
cast
the
vision
for
this
and
have
have
been
able
to
gather
around
them
a
an
incredible
incredible
committee.
We're
excited
about
this
because
it's
something
different,
something
unique
and
I
think
what
makes
it
so
special
is.
F
It
is
a
unity
week
that
culminates
with
the
with
the
juneteenth
jubilee
celebration
and
what
I
would
do
is
challenge
everybody
in
this
community.
Every
citizen
take
a
look
at
the
lineup
there's
something
for
everybody
and
step
out
there.
You
know,
if
you
don't
normally
go
to
events
at
the
civic
center
or
get
involved
just
take
a
chance.
Just
go
out
there
and
see
some
of
the
special
things
that
you're
going
to
be
able
to
encounter
out
there.
F
So
my
challenge
to
the
entire
community
is
to
heed
the
request
of
of
counselor
tucker
get
involved.
If
you
can
volunteer
volunteer,
if
you
can't
volunteer
show
up,
so
god
bless
all
of
you
guys
for
the
hard
work
that
you've
done.
We're
really
excited
about
what's
coming
this
summer
and
we
look
forward
to
unity
week
culminated
by
the
juneteenth
jubilee
celebration.
Thank
you.
C
All
right,
I
just
want
to
say
one
final
thing
when
I
first
when
I
first
got
elected,
I
spoke
with
our
mayor
skip
henderson
and
I
told
him
some
of
my
ideas
and
what
I
appreciate
is
that
he
welcomed
them.
C
He
welcomed
them
and-
and
he
allowed
me
to
actually
go
forward,
you
know,
and
actually
the
reason
why
this
is
coming
to
fruition
is
because
a
conversation
that
I
had
with
our
mayor
in
reference
to
having
something
for
the
city,
a
city-wide
event
and
not
just
focusing
on
district
four.
But
let's
focus
on
the
city
and
what
the
mayor
said
is
toy.
That's
a
good
idea.
C
How
about
we
call
it
unity
week
and
from
there
from
from
that
conversation,
I
reached
out
to
rob
and
matter
of
fact,
as
soon
as
he
said,
that
rob
was
standing
next
next
to
me
and
we
just
we
actually
just
took
off
so
honestly
mayor.
It
is
because
of
you
that
we
are
able
to
do
this
and
be
here
today,
and
I
absolutely
appreciate
my
my
colleagues
over
there,
because
I
can't
do
anything.
Nothing
will
get
approved
for
all
of
this.
