A
All
right,
well,
we've
got
a
very
full
agenda.
As
I
said,
we've
got
a
lot
of
people
to
be
recognized.
A
lot
of
relationships
and
chief
among
them
is
one
of
our
most
special
relationships,
which
is
celebrating
a
100
years
of
partnership
in
Columbus,
and
so
we
want
to
recognize
our
Columbus
fort
benning
centennial
and
we
have
with
us
the
commanding
general
Eric
Wesley
and
the
garrison
commander.
Colonel
Cox
with
us
welcome
gentlemen.
Please
come
forward
and
we
have
councillor.
Mike
Baker
is
going
to
read
the
proclamation
Thank.
B
You
mayor
gentlemen,
thank
you
for
joining
us.
It's
an
honor
and
a
pleasure
to
have
you
with
us
tonight
and
it's
certainly
my
honor,
to
read
this
proclamation
into
the
record
and
after
I'd
do
that.
If
you
would
introduce
any
guests,
you
have
and
tell
us
a
little
bit
about
the
centennial.
So
it's
my
pleasure
to
read
the
proclamation
Regis
Paulus,
whereas
on
April
4th
1917
the
day
after
President
Woodrow
Wilson
asked
Congress
for
a
declaration
of
war
against
Germany.
B
So
the
War
Department
created
a
special
board,
headed
by
Colonel
Henry
Ames,
commander
of
the
school
of
musketry
at
Fort,
Sill
Oklahoma,
to
select
a
site
to
train
soldiers
on
infantry
skills
and
tactics.
And
whereas,
when
Columbus
chamber
of
commerce
officials
learned
that
a
school
focused
on
training,
infantry
skills
and
tactics
would
be
created,
a
full-time
representative
was
sent
to
Washington
DC
to
promote
Columbus's
cause
and
on
August
17th
1918.
B
B
And
although
no
funds
had
yet
been
allocated
and
nothing
had
been
formally
approved
by
the
Secretary
of
War,
major
Jones
received
word
on
September
20th
1918,
that
the
infantry
school
of
on
staff
and
troops
from
Fort
Sill
were
being
transferred
and
would
arrive
on
October,
1st
1918
and
whereas
with
great
haste
and
with
the
willing
help
of
the
Columbus
chamber
of
commerce.
Colonel
Ames
and
major
Jones
found
an
84
acre
farm
belonging
to
mr.
B
Alex
Reid
on
Macon
Road,
which
was
selected
due
to
due
to
its
close
proximity
to
downtown
Columbus
city,
water
supply
and
streetcar
service,
and
the
first
detachment
of
the
infantry
school
of
Arms
arrived
on
October
7
1918
and
on
October
19
1918.
The
new
facility
was
formally
christened
camp
venting
and
whereas
these
visionary
citizens,
mr.
John

mr.

mr.

displayed
the
foresight,
vision
and
leadership
to

to

near
Columbus
Georgia.
Now,
therefore,
Theresa
Pike
Tomlinson,
mayor
of
Columbus
Georgia,
does
hereby
proclaim
Thursday
October
12
2017
as
the
starting
event
celebrating
our
year-long
recognition
of
Columbus
Fort
Benning
centennial
year.
Thank
you.
A
C
C
Past
Fort
Benning
is
different.
It
sits
here
because
of
the
wisdom
of
the
people
of
Columbus
who
realized
the
world
was
changing
in
1917
and
they
wanted
to
be
a
part
of
it
and
Lobby
Washington,
and
we
are
here
now
because
of
you
and
the
the
importance
of
that
is
that
decisions
you
make
in
this
body
can
have
huge
impacts
across
the
world
and
across
the
world.
C
You
did
impact
because
you've
been
raising
leaders
in
your
community
here
that
one
around
the
world
to
defend
our
nation
and
any
leader
of
notoriety
in
any
war
over
the
last
century
was
raised
right
here
at
Fort,
Benning
and
Columbus,
so
Columbus
and
this
body,
by
virtue
of
that
decision
in
1918,
has
touched
the
world
so
mayor.
Thank
you
very
much
for
your
support.
We
thank
you
for
the
community.
We
thank
you
for
the
leadership
of
this
body
and
god
bless
each
and
every
one
of
you.
