A
A
Red
was,
as
he
was
affectionately
known,
served
on
council
from
1970
tonight
to
2014..
He
served
on
the
city
commission
before
that
in
19,
before
consolidation
in
1970..

E
It
was
my
privilege
to
be
red's
pastor
and
to
be
his
friend,
I
always
said
we
we
had
breakfast
once
a
month
together
and
he
still
comes
up
in
my
calendar
once
a
month,
so
red
is
still
around
somewhere.
We
that's
a
special
blessing.
E
Thank
you
for
his
love
for
this
community
and
the
indelible
mark
that
his
leadership
has
left
with
us.
As
this
building
is
dedicated,
as
his
name
is
emblazoned
on
the
front,
may
it
always
be
a
place
that
stands
as
a
reminder
that
government
belongs
to
the
people
that
the
ear
is
always
tuned
to
them.
E
C
B
A
You
know
we're
here
to
celebrate
and
honor
our
friend
red
mcdaniel,
who
served
on
council
for
38
years,
but
red
as
we
affectionately,
knew
him
was
also
called
red,
joe
by
his
grandchildren
and
great-grandchildren,
and
I'd
like
to
take
this
opportunity
to
recognize
the
family
of
red.
If
y'all
would
stand
just
a
minute.
A
A
We
met
red
and
his
family
back
in
the
1960s
when
we
were
working
in
my
dad's
campaign
and
other
things
and
stan
and
chuck
have
become
really
good
friends
over
the
years
friends.
Since
then,
there
were
several
people
who
worked
really
close
with
my
dad
and
in
forming
the
city
government
that
we
know
now
and
consolidation.
A
A
We
all
enjoyed
red's
quick
wit
during
council
meetings,
and
you
did
not
want
to
be
on
the
receiving
end
of
his
humorous
jabs.
Now
I
don't
remember
who
said
this
or
or
when
it
was.
What
issue
we
were
talking
about,
but
red
was
trying
to
convince
us
to
support
an
issue
and
one
counselor
said
you're,
never
going
to
get
everybody
to
go
along
with
that,
and
he
looked
at
him
and
smiled,
as
only
read
can
do
he
said
I
don't
need
everybody.
A
A
F
I
know
a
lot
of
people
are
wondering.
What
am
I
gonna
say.
Excuse
me,
I
said
I
know
a
lot
of
people
are
wondering
what
I
might
say
about
my
good
friend,
my
great
friend,
red
mcdaniels.
F
F
F
F
F
There
are
a
number
of
people
that
said
you
can't
get
along
with
black
and
white,
but
red,
and
I
got
to
be
real
real
close
when
he
first
became
ill
had
a
heart
attack.
I
called
him
and
we
talked
and
then,
when
I
think
bob
40
chef
got
elected
mayor,
it
changed
a
whole
lot
of
dynamics
because
red
didn't
like
him,
no
more
than
like
me,
but
we
were
able
to
work
through
all
those
differences
and
deal
with
that.
F
F
But
overall
he
used
to
call
me
from
super
duper.
I
became
his
brother
and
all
that
time.
I
really
appreciate
that.
I
couldn't
attend
a
funeral,
but
I
always
did
respect
red
mcdaniels
because
he
respected
me
and
all
the
people
around,
and
so
I
thanked
him
for
his
friendship.
While
he
was
alive
because
we
would
talk
to
each
other
every
week
about
something
happening
at
council
or
something
happen
throughout
the
city
or
something
we
you
know,
red
was
a
very
good
conservatives
and
I
was
a
very
good
democratic
liberal.
F
A
Thank
you,
council,
subaru
red
did
have
a
calming
effect
on
all
of
us.
Even
every
time
we
butted
heads
right.
If
you
would
join
me
in
welcoming
mayor
bob
heydrich
say
a
few
words
with
us.
G
When
richard
bishop
called
me
and
asked
me
if
I
would
say
a
few
words
today,
he
said
the
word
few
about
six
times
to
remind
me
of
that.
He'd
only
wanted
me
to
say
a
beer,
but
it's
hard
to
talk
about
red
mcdaniel.
In
a
few
words,
I've
known
red
a
long
long
long
time.
G
I
first
heard
of
red.
When
I
went
to
columbus
high
school
in
the
seventh
grade.
We
were
the
last
seventh
grade.
Class
red
was
a
senior
and
red
was
a
legend,
because
red
was
a
good
looking
guy.
He
was
popular.
He
was
easy
to
get
along
with
everybody
liked
red
mcdaniel
and
he
was
the
star
of
the
football
team.
He
participated
in
all
the
athletics
and
he
was
really
a
legend
in
that
school.
G
Now
we
didn't
know
anything
about
columbus
eye
when
we
went,
we
didn't
know
where
the
library
was
where
the
cafeteria
was.
But
one
thing
we
learned
quickly
was
that
red
mcdaniel
was
a
legend
now
red
and
joe
hall
for
a
long
time,
and
I
don't
know
maybe
still
do
for
all.
I
know
held
the
record
for
the
longest
touchdown
pass
ever
thrown
at
memorial
stadium
90
some
odd
yards,
I
think
it
was
98-
may
have
been
96.
G
G
G
G
Red
had
gone
to
florida
on
a
football
scholarship,
but
and
injured,
got
injured,
had
an
injury
and
he
come
back
to
school
and
went
to
school
at
mercer,
and
he
was
of
course,
the
star
of
the
intramural
football
team
that
fidel
said
there
were
no
at
that
time.
Mercer
didn't
have
a
football
team,
so
the
only
fall
sports
were
the
intramural
football
games
between
the
various
fraternities
and
so
forth,
and
red
also
was
legendary.
G
In
being
a
ladies
man,
there
were
a
lot
of
young
ladies
at
wesleyan
and
and
mercer
coeds,
who
were
who
were
smitten
with
red
through
the
years,
but
that
all
ended
when
he
met
joanne
mcdaniel
joanne,
who
was
a
coyote.
G
G
gary's,
dad
called
me
one
day,
and
he
said
you
know
I'm
gonna
run
for
mayor
of
the
city.
This
is
the
old
city
commission
and
he
said
I've
got
to
get
three
people
on
that
with
me,
so
that
we
can
get
some
things
done,
and
I've
talked
red
mcdaniel
into
running
for
the
city
council,
a
city
commission,
and
he
said
I
told
him,
you
would
manage
his
campaign
and
I
said,
oh
I
you
told
him
that
he
said
yeah.
G
red
was
a
great
guy.
He
was
a
great
guy,
but
he
is
his
legend.
Extends
to
his
service
on
the
council.
Red
was
the
go-to
counselor.
If
you
had
any
kind
of
problem,
whether
it
was
a
stopped
up
storm
drain
or
it
was
a
pothole
in
your
street,
you
could
call
red
whether
you
were
in
his
district
or
not,
and
red
would
take
care
of
it
red
one
understood
the
most
fundamental
thing
about
serving
in
city,
government
or
government
at
any
level.
G
A
H
Well,
I'd
like
to
thank
everybody
for
being
here
and
tell
you
just
how
humbled
we
are
for
this
honor
and
believe
it
or
not
nathan,
our
humble
red
would
have
been
for
this
honor.
He
might
not
have
shown
it,
but
I
promise
you
it
would
have
humbled
him
along
with
what
bob
said.
I
miss
my
mama
not
being
here
and
of
course
I
wish
scott
could
be
here,
because
he
was
very
proud
of
my
dad
and
my
dad
was
proud
of
his
family.
H
H
But
again
I
just
want
to
say
how
how
proud
we
are
and
how
humble
we
are
and
how
appreciative
we
are
of
this
honor
and
and
us
as
a
family
we'll
do
everything
we
can
to
live
up
to
his
legacy.
Well,
thank
you
very.
H
A
Thank
you
chuck,
we'll
now
hear
from
city
manager.
Isaiah
hickly
help
me
welcome
the
city
manager.
I
I
I
will
never
forget
how
he
mastered
the
budget
and
the
budget
process
in
our
city
government
and
of
course,
then
there
is
red
mcdaniel
and,
as
I
came
downtown
the
city
hall
and
and
observe
the
members
of
city
council,
I
wondered
how
am
I
going
to
get
along
with
that
guy
right
there,
that
guy
was
red
mcdaniel
and
I
noticed
his
personality
and-
and
you
know
his
conversations
during
city
council
and
then
I
wondered.
I
How
is
he
a
friend
of
nathan
suber
that
didn't
make
sense
to
me
and
but
I
figured
if
nathan
could
get
along
with
him?
I
I
I
He
gave
himself
to
public
service
and
he
served
his
constituents
well
and
I
concur
and
then
I
thought
about
when
bob
heydrich
talked
about
rhett
mcdaniel
and
you
won
the
pothole
done
and
how
he
would
get
things
done
for
you
and
and
and
mayor
heidrick
I'll,
tell
you
how
you
got
it
done
at
least
when
he
called
me.
I
Damn
pothole
field,
I
mean
he
made
it
real
plain
to
me
and
I
needed
done
like
yesterday,
and
so
he
had
a
way
of
making
sure
he
talked
to
your
plane
enough
that
you
knew
you
need
to
go,
get
that
done,
and
then
I
thought
about
when
we
were
going
to
do
some
things
down
at
lake
bottom
and
we
were
going
to
cut
down
some
trees
and
the
media
called
red,
and
he
called
me
and
said:
isaiah
don't
cut
down
one
damn
tree,
I
mean
he
just
made
a
plan
and
he
was
effective
and
I
understood
him
and
he
got
it.
I
I
I
didn't
know
who
the
manager
was
at
the
country
club,
but
obviously
he
did,
but
red
became
one
of
my
greatest
allies.
One
of
my
best
friends,
I
mean
he
really
did
if
I
needed
support
on
anything
and
made
a
phone
call
to
read,
he
was
there
with
me
and
so
to
the
family.
I
A
A
Forgive
me
mother.
I
hope
she
doesn't
hear
me
now
we're
going
to
hear
from
city
councilor
walker.
Garrett
join
me
in
welcoming
walker.
J
I'll
keep
this
brief
yeah.
I
promise
you.
The
elections
are
not
rigged,
but
it
just
so
happens
that
I
was
an
usher
at
first
baptist.
That's
how
I
knew
red
mcdaniel
and
I
got
to
know
joe
much
better
when
I
decided
I
was
gonna
run
for
that
seat
and
tom
buck
also
with
the
first
baptism
is
my
cousin.
So
I
just
I'll
just
say
that
I
think
the
baptist.
J
We
have
to
take
a
position
and
servant
leadership
in
this
community,
but
I
knew
I
knew
him
from
talking
to
him
every
sunday
when
I
was
ushering,
but
afterwards,
when
he
passed,
I
felt
compelled
to
run
for
council
and
the
first
person
I
went
to
to
talk
to
about
it
and
what
I
should
do
was
joe
and
behind
every
great
man
is
an
even
greater
woman,
and
she
gave
me
his
original
code
books,
city
charter,
which
the
family,
I
would
love,
if
you
all
want
them
back,
I'd
love
to
give
them
to
you,
but
she
said
walker.
J
I
want
you
to
have
these
and
she
was
one
of
the
greatest
mentors
I
had,
and
I
remember
the
mayor
has
quarterly
sessions
with
council
to
discuss
things,
so
we
can
stay
abreast,
not
just
stay
in
eight
hour
meetings
and
we
talked
about
renaming
this
renaming
a
building
him,
and
I
remember
when
I
felt
like
there
was
a
consensus
on
council.
This
was
during
coven.
J
J
I'm
just
so
excited
about
it
because
you've
been
there
as
a
mentor
for
me,
and
I
would
go
talk
to
her
whenever
I
had
questions
and
red
lived
on
with
so
many
people
from
bruce
telling
me
walker,
we
get
the
agenda
on
friday
afternoons,
there's
not
enough
time
in
the
day
to
read
every
word
you
need
to.
You
need
to
get
what
you
need
and
then
ask
questions,
because
you
can't
stress
you're
out
with
all
that
to
jack
bassett,
mayor
heydrich,
milton
jones
and
mayor
heidrick.
J
J
I
know
she
influenced
a
lot
of
what
red
did
and
I
want
to
honor
her
because
it
killed
me
that
she
wasn't
here
to
see
this
happen.
I
hate
that
covid
was
there,
but
at
least
she
knew
it
was
happening,
and
she
always
said
she
looked
forward
to
a
kiss
from
me
when
I
was
ushering,
so
I
would
kiss
her
on
the
cheek
when
she
walked
in
and
she
didn't
get
to
see
little
walker
for
a
long
time,
because
we
couldn't
come
back
because
of
no
child
care.
J
So
when
we
finally
realized
walker's
about
to
be
won,
we've
got
to
get
him
dedicated.
I
did
the
flowers
that
weekend
for
in
honor
of
tom,
buck
and
and
red
and
told
charlie
about,
because
I
saw
him
in
the
balcony,
he
said
he'd
tell
his
grandmother
and
she
did
come
even
though
she
was
ill.
J
J
I
bug
the
hell
out
of
him
too.
If
I
need
something
done
so
I
may
not
be
the
vet
speak
as
much
at
council
as
a
lot
of
the
other
counselors,
and
I
may
not
always
have
that.
Much
to
say,
but
I
do
try
and
always
quickly
respond
to
constituents
and
when
milton
jones
told
me
he
wanted
me
wanted
me
to
put
trees
down
in
there.
I
knew
from
red
mcdaniel's
history.
J
I
barely
put
some
trees
down
where
he
told
me
to
and
protect
them,
but
I
just
want
to
say
that
joe
mcdaniel,
I
wish
I
know
she's
watching
from
heaven
right
now
and
I
love
her
and
I
loved
read
through
her,
even
though
I
only
knew
him
from
ushering
and
I'm
just
honored
to
sit
in
his
seat
and
honor
his
presence
with
my
service.
Thank
you
very
much.
A
K
Thank
you.
First,
I
want
to
recognize
some
of
the
other
counselors
that
are
here
counselor
thomas
you
heard
from
councilor
garrett,
and
I
got
to
tell
you
when
he
says
he
doesn't
say
very
much:
that's
what
red
did
so
you're,
keeping
with
the
tradition
of
that
seed
being
effective,
not
verbose
and,
of
course,
counselor
huff
and,
of
course,
our
great
city
manager
and
our
you.
We
talked
about
our
councillor,
woodson
and,
of
course,
mayor
pro.
K
When
I
met
red
mcdaniel,
he
made
me
feel
anything
but
calm.
I
I
specifically
remember
one
night
in
1978
when
barry
henderson,
my
dad
decided
it
would
be
advisable.
If
I
found
some
other
place
to
sleep
that
night,
I
only
knew
one
other
place
to
go.
So
I
headed
to
chuck's,
because
I
knew
that
joe
loved
me
and
would
let
me
stay
if
I
could
just
get
past
red,
and
luckily
I
think
I
did.
Of
course
the
other
side
of
that
story
is.
K
K
So
most
of
my
stories
about
red,
I'm
not
so
sure
the
statute
of
limitations
has
expired
and
I
probably
won't
tell
any
of
those.
But
one
thing
I
will
say
I'll
agree
with
our
city
manager
in
in
his
quote
from
aj
mcclung,
and
that
is
that
it
is.
It
is
completely
completely
perfect
that
this
building
is
going
to
bear
red
mcdaniel's
name.
We
did
struggle
to
try
to
put
this
together.
K
Kova
didn't
help
us
and
then,
when
kovitz
started,
to
ease
up
a
little
bit,
mama
joe
was
not
doing
well
and
as
bitterly
disappointed
as
I
was
that
we
were
not
going
to
be
able
to
hold
this
public
ceremony
for
the
renaming
the
more
I
think
about
it,
the
more
fitting
it
is
that
they're
watching
it
together,
and
that
makes
me
feel
good,
because
this
is
a
close-knit
family
and
it
was
spearheaded
by
red
and
joe
leading
the
way.
So
I
want
to
thank
all
of
you
for
being
here.
