From YouTube: Cupertino: 60 Years of Bringing the Community Together
Description
This historical documentary was originally produced as a celebration of Cupertino's 60th anniversary as an incorporated city in 2015 (1955-2015) and has been re-released for Cupertino's 65th anniversary in 2020.
A
Cupertino
owes
its
earliest
mention
in
recorded
history
to
the
1776
expedition
led
by
the
Spanish
explorer
Captain
Juan
Bautista
De
Anza,
starting
in
Sonora
Mexico
DeAnza,
led
a
group
up
the
coast
of
California
aimée
to
establish
a
Presidio
or
fort
on
San
Francisco
Bay,
leaving
the
majority
of
the
party
of
men,
women
and
children
in
Monterey
to
rest
from
their
travels
De
Anza
and
his
diarist
in
cartographer
Franciscan
priest,
Pedro
font
and
18.
Other
men
pressed
on
through
the
Santa
Clara
Valley
in
late
march,
towards
their
San
Francisco
destination.
A
The
village
of
Cupertino
sprang
up
at
the
crossroads
of
Saratoga
Sunnyvale
Road.
Now
the
Anza
Boulevard
and
Stevens
Creek
Road.
It
was
first
known
as
Westside,
but
by
1898
the
post
office
at
the
crossroads
needed
a
new
name
to
distinguish
it
from
others.
Similarly,
named
towns,
John
T
Doyle,
a
San
Francisco
lawyer
and
historian,
had
given
the
name
Cupertino
to
his
winery
in
recognition
of
the
name
bestowed
on
the
nearby
creeks
by
Pedro
font
in
1904.
A
The
name
was
applied
to
the
crossroads
into
the
post-office
when
the
home
Union
store,
incorporated
under
the
name,
the
Cupertino
store
and
moved
to
the
northeast
corner
of
the
crossroads.
Many
of
Cupertino
spyin
Ear
settlers
planted
grapes
in
the
late
1800s
vineyards
and
wineries
proliferated
on
Montebello
Ridge,
on
the
lower
foothills
and
on
the
flat
lands
below
around
1895.
The
flourishing
wine
industry
was
struck
by
flocks
era,
a
root
louse
it
virtually
destroyed
75%
of
the
vineyards.
In
five
years.
A
A
few
of
the
more
substantial
viticulture
lists
resorted
to
grafting,
while
many
others
switched
to
French,
prunes,
peaches,
apricots
cherries,
plums,
walnuts
and
almonds.
As
these
orchards
flourished,
the
valley
became
known
for
the
spring
profusion
of
blossoms,
many
more
people
paths
through
the
Cupertino
area,
first
by
Electric,
Railway
and
later
by
car,
to
view
all
the
blossoms
in
the
valley
of
heart's
delight
because
of
the
electric
railway.
The
Monta
Vista
area
of
Cupertino
developed
Monta
Vista
was
the
name
of
its
first
housing
in
the
mid-1950s.
A
A
group
of
settlers
with
large
landholdings
banded
together
for
a
common
cause,
their
little
corner
and
the
valley
of
heart's
delight,
was
surrounded
by
cities.
Looking
for
more
space
to
house
booming
post-war
workforces,
the
west
side,
with
acres
of
ranches
orchards
and
vineyards,
was
ripe
for
annexation,
determined
to
preserve
their
independence.
Local
leaders
waged
a
year-long,
hard-fought
battle
for
incorporation
on
October
10th
1955.
They
celebrated
victory
as
Cupertino
officially
became
the
thirteenth
city
in
Santa,
Clara
County.
A
This
historic
event
gave
rise
not
only
to
a
new
town,
but
also
to
a
fledgling
community
of
1746
people
as
they
embrace
the
challenge
of
self-government.
These
early
residents
began
creating
an
identity
and
defining
the
values
that
would
sustain
their
community
for
decades
to
come
after
incorporation,
Cupertino
was
quickly
caught
up
in
the
valleys
marched
toward
progress.
The
pace
was
Swift
in
the
first
10
years,
the
town
of
less
than
four
square
miles
had
more
than
doubled
in
size,
and
the
population
jumped
over
500%
lands
once
used
for
agriculture
gave
way
to
housing
subdivisions.
A
A
new
stretch
of
Interstate
280
ran
through
the
city
and
De
Anza
College
encompassing
40
campus
buildings,
was
under
construction.
When
the
next
decade
arrived
more
than
63
percent
of
Cupertino
was
completely
developed.
Falco
business
and
industrial
park
was
a
major
employment
center.
Apple
Computer
was
poised
to
launch
and
Cupertino
was
about
to
transform
itself
the
once
rural
enclave
in
the
valley
of
heart's
delight
would
soon
become
a
progressive
high-tech
hub
in
Silicon
Valley.
A
Amid
dramatic
landscape
and
demographic
changes,
the
Cupertino
community
began
to
forge
a
distinctive
identity,
a
number
of
residents,
many
descended
from
local
farming,
families
fought
to
retain
open
spaces
and
urge
the
balance
between
development
and
green
areas.
Thus,
when
new
housing
tracts
were
built
in
the
city,
nearby
parks
also
sprang
up.
The
city's
commitment
to
open
space
has
been
constant
for
over
six
decades.
A
Today,
Cupertino
maintains
17
neighborhood
parks
for
special
purpose
parks,
hooting,
blackberry
farm
and
McCullen
ranch
preserve
numerous
youth
sport
fields,
miles
of
citywide
bike
paths
and
hundreds
of
hiking
trails
and
protected
areas
throughout
the
foothills.
Historic
and
environmentally
significant
sites,
such
as
stockholm,
eyre,
homestead
and
stevens
creek
corridor
have
been
thoughtfully,
preserved
and
restored.
Nature
also
reflected
in
a
canopy
of
14,000
street
trees
remains
rooted
in
cupertino
x'
urban
landscape.
Early
cupertino
leaders
understood
the
economic
and
social
value
of
attracting
corporate
citizens
to
their
growing
city.
A
By
the
time
the
400
acre
Valco
industrial
park
broke
ground
in
1966.
Several
large
companies
and
well-known
electronics
firms
had
already
signed
on
as
tenants.
The
arrival
of
big
business
offered
a
new
and
exciting
component
to
the
community.
An
original
firm,
such
as
Varian
associates
in
Tercel
and
American
Microsystems
health
Cupertino
emerged
as
a
city
of
the
future.
The
city's
image
received
a
significant
boost
in
the
late
1970s
when
Apple
Computer
established
his
corporate
headquarters
in
Cupertino
and
began
filling
office
buildings
with
his
teeming
workforce
for
more
than
half
of
Cupertino
life.
A
As
a
city,
Apple
has
been
a
prestigious
and
robust
resident.
Solid
confirmation
of
the
bond
between
the
company
in
the
city
came
in
2011
when
Apple
chose
to
build
its
2.8
million
square
foot
state-of-the-art
headquarters
with
in
Cupertino
city
limits
as
home
to
many
Silicon
Valley
firms
and
startups
Cupertino
is
recognized
as
a
place
that
prizes
innovation
in
all
its
forms:
innovation
that
extends
beyond
business
and
into
all
aspects
of
the
community.
A
Besides
open
space
and
innovation,
the
people
of
Cupertino
have
always
made
education
a
top
priority,
long
before
incorporation
immigrants
from
France,
Italy
and
Yugoslavia
donated
pieces
of
their
property
for
one-room
schoolhouses,
beginning
with
Lincoln
Elementary
in
1865.
At
the
time
of
incorporation
in
1955,
there
were
7
schools
in
the
tiny
district.
Two
years
later,
the
school
district
was
named,
one
of
the
top
five
in
the
state.
A
Recognition
for
the
quality
of
education
in
Cupertino
began
early
and
continues
to
this
day,
students
in
the
elementary
and
high
school
districts
excel
on
academic
performance
tests,
with
scores
consistently
ranked
in
the
top
tier
of
the
state
and
the
nation.
The
schools
are
technologically
advanced
and
receive
enormous
support
from
active
involved
parents
and
community
members.
Other
countries,
especially
China
and
India,
where
education
is
paramount,
began
taking
notice
of
the
district
success
in
the
1980s
in
the
ensuing
years.
A
The
promise
of
high
achieving
schools,
coupled
with
the
job
opportunities
for
skilled
labor
in
Silicon
Valley,
continues
a
steady
flow
of
immigrants
to
Cupertino
those
newly
arrived
bring
a
new
variety
of
culture
and
language
to
the
city.
Today,
some
50
different
languages
are
represented
in
local
schools,
shops
and
restaurants,
offer
the
goods
and
tastes
of
far-off
countries,
multicultural
events
and
festivals
throughout
the
year
celebrate
the
city's
global
population.
A
Cupertino

The
values

long
