managed
JCPenney
stores
in
other
communities
I'm
just
really
impressed
with
the
vitality
and
the
quality
of
the
membership
that
we
have
associated
with
our
chamber
commerce.
Here
in
Cupertino,
the
affection
I
think
that
we've
seen
grow
between
education
business.
That's
going
to
be
a
interesting
thing
to
watch
tonight
when
you
talk
about
the
city
of
Cupertino,
I,
think
you're
talking
about
one
of
the
top
cities,
United,
States
and
I-
think
I
don't
care
whether
you're
talking
about
the
government
function,
the
community
activities,
the
Parks
and
Rec
Department.

And
I
think
it
will
increase
in
the
future.
I'm
hoping
I
think
that
as
long
as
we
get
the
word
out
to
people
that
this
program
exists,
they
want
to
do
it
and
I.
Think
that's
probably
my
my
biggest
goal
at
the
beginning
of
every
school
years
to
just
make
sure
every
employee
on
this
site
knows
about
the
program
and
then
it
pretty
much
takes
care
of
itself.
People
are
very
enthusiastic
and
the
school
district
and
the
teachers
involved
are
very
enthusiastic
too.

Being
involved
has
been
very
satisfying
to
me,
you
feel
that,
especially
when
you
see
things
change
and-
and
you
see
the
impact
that
you
have
on
things-
it
can
be
very
rewarding.
I
can't
really
say
why
I
got
involved
cos
when
I
first
started
getting
involved
with
the
town.
I
was
25
years
old
and
at
that
time
I
definitely
was
the
youngest
commissioner
and
people
always
confused
me
with
being
a
supervisor
or
working
for
seemed
alien,
and
that
still
happens,
but
I
guess.
My
motivation
at
that
time
was
just
to
get
involved.

I
think
it's
very
easy
for
people
to
throw
stones
to
be
very
critical
of
what's
going
on
in
their
environment
around
them
and
really
the
best
way
to
understand
more
about
it
and
feel
like
you're
doing
something
about
I
think
is
to
get
involved,
and
so,
as
a
result,
when
an
opening
came
up
in
the
Parks
and
Recreation
Commission
I
felt.
So
that
would
be
perfect
for
me,
since
I
loved
being
outdoors
and
I'm
involved
with
several
different
types
of
sports.
It
was
a
nice
easy
in
for
me.

Originally
I'm
from
New
Jersey
and
during
the
1960s
was
was
an
era
where
a
lot
of
people
started
to
become
more
aware
of.
What's
going
on
in
society,
you
know
there
were
the
issues
about
Vietnam
War.
There
were
the
civil
rights
issues,
the
poverty
issues,
and
so,
as
a
kid
growing
up
and
that
year,
I
became
more
aware
of
those
issues
and
wanted
to
be
involved
in
helping
fight.

When
I
became
fourth
vice
president
of
the
council,
that's
automatically
Health
and
Welfare.
So
that's
when
I
started
down
here,
and
that
was
probably
about
five
years
ago,
starting
right
working
here
in
the
Sedgwick
school
and
since
then
every
year
holiday
basket.
My
Christmas
gets
you
up
a
little
bit,
but
that's
okay,
because
I
know
that
my
family
understands
spend
a
lot
of
time
down.

I
We
have
food
and
toy
baskets
for
needy
families
in
our
school
districts,
the
Cupertino
Union
School
District
in
the
Fremont
Union
High
School
District,
all
the
food
and
toys
are
donated
by
the
school
district.
They
have
places
where
the
children
in
the
school's
bring
toys
to
school
and
then
they're
assembled
here,
they're
all
brought
here,
and
then
we
assemble
the
boxes.

That's
in
a
while
family
we'll
send
a
thank-you
note
saying
that
they
enjoyed
the
food
and
the
children
loved
the
baskets
toys
and
then
periodically
we'll
get
a
letter
saying
thank
you
for
give
it
providing
us
last
year
with
a
toy
basket
and
food
basket,
but
this
year
we
we
don't
need
one
so
and
please
pass
it
on
to
someone
else.
That
loves
always
make
us
feel.

A
lot
of
them
are,
you
know
it's
totally
homebound:
they
don't
have
cars,
they
don't
drive
anymore
and
usually
there
isn't
a
member
of
the
family.
That's
close
enough
by
to
go
out
and
do
the
grocery
shopping
for
them.
It's
not
really
a
whole
lot.
It's
just
that
I
picked
the
bridge
up.
You
know
on
the
bakery
on
Wednesdays,
deliver
some
to
community
services
and
then
take
the
rest
of
it
to
the
Senior
Citizens
Center
in
Cupertino,
and
then
on.
Thursday
I
go
to
the
Union
Church.
The
groceries
are
already
bagged.

They
either
get
from
the
food
bank
in
San,
Jose
and
load
it
into
the
car
and
then
I
just
drive
up
here
and
some
of
the
ladies,
like
mrs.
chalupa
I
I
help
her
unload
it
because
she's
a
little
unstable,
so
I
help
her
put
a
groceries
away
and
but
the
other
lady
and
just
a
good
morning
and
just
make
sure
they're
okay
about
it.

There's
certainly
a
place
for
volunteerism
in
this
community
and
probably
on
an
average-sized
community.
We
probably
air
above
language
we
passed
here.
We
of
course
everybody
knows
about
the
earthquake
and
some
of
our
members
went
out,
went
out
and
worked
the
hands
on
the
jobs
too.
There
was
one
one
couple
down
and
an
old
couple
down
in
the
Santa
Cruz
Mountains
at
their
house
and
slid
off
the
foundation
and
their
washing
machine
without
the
hot
water
here
was
tipped
over
and
and
we'd
lurk
down
there
to
get
get
them
all
the
lady
of
the
house.

Of
young
and
it's
a
bunch
of
difficult
impossibilities
length
on
Jeffy
evaluations,
we've
got
some
hunky
very
decent
and
it's
something
to
bring
cat
35
feet:
elevated
highway
down
under
15
to
16
feet
the
pressed
highway
and
I
learned
one
thing
after
the
soft
things.
It
takes
courage
to
stand
up
and
fight
and
it
seems
like
it
takes
a
view,
even
bigger
courage,
to
know
when
to
say:
stop:
City
Council,
the
City
Hall
needs
to
hear
from
the
citizens
and
I
think
we
were
able
to
do
that.

There's
something
I
heard
about
when
you're
paid
for
it.
You
have
to
do
it
when
you're
not
paid
for
it
you're
motivated
to
do
it
and
volunteers.

lot
more
will
spend
a
lot
more
time
doing
the
job
and
trying
to
get
the
job
done
a
lot
of
times
when
somebody's
paid
to
do
and
they
look
at
it
in
different
aspect.

I
am
the
youth
activities
chairman
and
also
the
adviser
to
the
Fremont
octagon
Club.
This
rule
provides
an
opportunity
for
me
to
work
with
young
students
at
Fremont,
High
School,
that
are
involved
in
octagon
activities,
and
the
octagon
Club
is
also
an
to
set
this
straight.
The
youth
service
organization,
designed
along
with
similar
lines
at
that
optimist,
club,
and
that
our
aim
is
to
provide
services
to
the
community
through
participation
in
activities
wherever
they
may
be
needed,
or
we
realize
that
we
can
provide
services
in
whatever
area
possible.

One
of
the
things
that
I
have
found
and
that
I
would
urge
all
people
to
consider
is
involvement
in
a
service
club.
Of
course,
the
Dan's
optimist
club
would
be
my
first
choice,
but
any
service
club
would
provide
this
opportunity
for
people
who
are
looking
to
provide
service
back
to
the
community
in
any
way
that
they
may
feel
that
they
can
benefit
the
community
before
I
was
involved
in
the
optimist.
Club
I
had
a
lot
of
time
on
my
hands
since
I
have
become
involved
in
the
optimist.

Club
I
have
no
time
on
my
hands
any
longer
and
I
find
that
the
rewards
that
I
personally
receive
are
great
to
me
in
that
I'm
able
to
see
the
use
that
I'm
working
with
really
benefit
from
the
responsibilities
and
the
roles
and
the
obligations
that
they
assume
upon
themselves.
And
it
brings
up
bright
spots
to
my
heart
being
able
to
see
them
growing
and
both
their
leadership
abilities
and
their
involvement
within
the
community
service
that
they're
providing
to
their
users
their
school
or
their
immediate
community.

don't
think
you
can
start
too
young
telling
giving
our
children
that
message
that
Victor,
oh
sorry,
dad
progress
can
hurt.
You
kill
you
I,
think
that
should
be
a
real,
clear
message.
All
during
their
childhood
I
think
there's
going
to
continue.
I
think
it
can
only
grow
once
we
began
implementing
it
in
one
particular
school
and
they're.
So
successful
all
of
the
school
wanted
it
now,
I
think
they're
all
committed
to
it,
and
as
long
as
there's
that
request
that
demand
from
the
community,
the
Sheriff's
Office
will
provide
it.

feel
very
grateful
for
being
here
and
for
doing.
This.
I
also
feel
that
I'm
doing
something
positive,
the
kids
on
changing
attitudes
and
I'm,
making
it
okay
and
I'm
bringing
police
officers
to
a
personal
human
level.
They
know
that
I
care
about
them
I
know
that
they
care
about
me
we're
developing
a
relationship
in
the
17
weeks,
and
it
goes
over
because
I've
run
into
my
dare
kids
from
two
years
ago,
and
they
there's
a
lot
of
warmth
and
it's
just
a
very
positive.

Cupertino
is
small
enough,
so
that
people
are
still
know
each
other,
and
yet
it
really
encompasses
a
whole
lot
of
different
cultures
and
ethnic
backgrounds.
We're
seeing
a
lot
of
different
ethnic
cultures
using
the
library
and
it's
just
a
wonderful
blend.
It
is
a
special
community
and
there
are
a
lot
of
really
good
people
here.
I
really.

Each
of
the
schools
is
working
with
their
PTA
or
homeschool
club
to
continually
be
making
sure
that
they're
more
and
more
ready
and
able
to
deal
with
students
in
an
emergency.
We
have,
of
course,
a
high
likelihood
of
major
earthquakes
and
so
the
more
people
that
we
have
know
what
to
do
in
an
emergency
and
what
not
to
do
in
an
emergency
better
off.

This
community
is,
you
need
to
think
for
any
number
of
reasons,
but
one
of
which
is
that
when,
when
they
are
given
the
information
necessary
to
act,
they
will
act
and
support
a
program
for
children.
It's
just
a
matter
of
being
able
to
coordinate
our
efforts
both
to
get
the
word
out
and
to
have
decisions
made
that
will
benefit
children
and
ultimately,
the
success
of
these
youngsters
is
going
to
be
what
services
community
well
in
the
future,
and
the
number
of
families
were
a
single
family
or
both
parents
work.

Children
need
adult
supervision
before
and
after
school,
more
and
more
and
more
and
and
the
waiting
list
of
our
schools
demonstrate
that,
whether
it's
with
this
district
or
elsewhere
in
this
community,
which
I
anticipate
living
ones,
that
we
look
at
now
and
our
community
I'll
always
be
involved
in
in
programs
for
children.
That's
that's
part
of
the
life
and
it's.
What
gives
me
the
greatest
pleasure
is
to
be
a
part
of
of
an
organization
of
a
team
that
value
that
and
really
any
one
of
us
can
be
vitally
involved
and
make
a
difference.

Well,
I've
been
here
at
the
Flint
Center
for
eight
years,
I
was
riding
on
the
college
campus
for
18
years.
I
came
here
as
a
counselor
after
I
finished
my
studies
at
Stanford
University
and
in
1981
or
toward
the
end
of
81.
The
president
asked,
if
I
might
come
in,
to
assist
in
me
in
the
theatre
for
I
thought
for
a
short
time.
I
thought
I
had
left
show
business,
but
he
asked
me
to
do
that
and
I
wanted
to
do
it
and
I
came
in
here
and
in
July.

I've
been
here
ever
since
I
love,
challenge
I
like
something
new
to
happen,
and
it's
something
new
every
day
and
summer
problems.
There's
no
question
about,
but
that's
all
right,
I'd
like
to
be
busy
and
I've
always
been
a
busy
person.
I
hoped
I
always
will
be
I've,
been
even
more
in
tune
since
they
came
into
the
chamber.

But
I
do
try
to
put
myself
out
there
as
much
as
possible,
go
to
many
many
activities
and
also
try
to
go
to
many
different
companies
and
try
to
find
out
some
of
the
things
that
they're
interested
in
and
hopefully
we
can
make
that
kind
of
marriage
so
that
we
can
provide
the
kinds
of
programming
they
would
like
to
see
both
on
the
national
international
level.
Cultural
programs
are
very,
very
important
to
me
that
we
so
many
things
going
on
in
the
world
now
and
we
want
to
be
a
part
of
it
very
important.

Is
you
just
want
to
preserve
that
rich
history
and
all
of
the
wonderful
memories
that
Cupertino
has
I'm
still
living
in
the
house
that
we
lived
in,
went
to
school
from
as
a
child,
and
my
mother
was
left
with
eight
of
us
when
I
was
ten
years
old
and
this
home
was
built
with
just
a
wing
and
a
prayer
you
might
say,
because
it
times
were
very
difficult
for
everybody
not
only
for
us,
but
for
everybody
so
hard.
You
know
some
people
think
of
setting
up
a
museum,
but
that's
it
no
way.
No
way.

It's
only
the
beginning.
We
we
we
have
contributions
to
it.
Now
when
I
say
we
need
to
make
our
contribution,
I
don't
mean
financially,
because
we
could
use
the
money,
but
I
don't
mean
it
that
way,
but
there's
other
things
that
you
can
volunteer
your
time
for
and
make
yourself
available
to
come
down
and
help
out
in
the
various
things
that
do
come
up.
We
always
need
to
work
along
with
the
museum.
It's
going
to
be
something
that
will
be
a
lifetime
project,
as
is
so
in
other
museums,
too.

from
my
father,
who
was
a
I
guess,
the
king
of
volunteers
in
the
town
I
grew
up
in
Wenatchee
Washington
and
he
was
a
retail
store
manager
and
he
found
time
to
be
a
Cub
Scout
to
cub
Master
Boy
Scout
leader
was
active
in
the
United
Way
drives.
Was
president
the
Chamber
of
Commerce
things
of
that
nature,
then
the
other
part
of
that
I
think
probably
stems
from
mr.
JC
Penney's
idea
of
giving
back
to
a
community
that
was
you're
getting
from
that
community
and
allen.

Maryanne
Wallace
could
there
be
a
library
as
successful
as
our
Cupertino
library
without
a
driving
force
like
Mary
Ann,
doing
whatever
needs
to
be
done
without
a
moment's
hesitation
through
her
work
with
the
Library
Commission,
she
successfully
convinced
Apple
Computer
to
donate
much
needed
and
much
appreciated
equipment
for
public
use.
Mary
Ann
has
also
made
equally
outstanding
contributions
through
her
work
with
a
Chamber
of
Commerce
and
quota
club
on
which
Mary
Ann
has
served
since
its
inception
in
1985,
thanks
to
Mary,
Ann
and
other
women.

Having
so
many
people
in
the
community
who
are
willing
to
help
each
other
out,
that's
what's
so
good.
Many
of
the
people
that
are
in
the
chamber
belong
to
quota
or
belong
to
the
Rotary
belong
to
other
groups,
and
there
is
a
lot
there
a
lot
of
very
dedicated
people
here
and
it's
just
fun
being
around
people
that
are
that
high
energy
high
powered
and
we
have
a
lot
of
fun
doing
things
and
I
think
a
lot
gets
accomplished,
and
now
in
that
way,
we
can
always
wanted
time
to
do
one
more
thing:
it's
fun.
