are
here
tonight.
They
are

Jeff
mo
voters
in
this
school
district
may
vote
for
two
of
these
candidates
and
the
two
candidates
that
get
the
most
votes
in
November
will
be
elected
to
the
school
board.
B
The
candidates
have
agreed
to
a
format
and
ground
rules
for
tonight's
forum.
The
format
is
simple:
I
will
pose
questions
to
the
candidates
and
each
candidate
will
have
60
seconds
to
respond.
A
timer
seated
at
the
front
of
the
room
will
give
candidates
visual
signals
to
help
them
paste
their
responses.
B
B
We
received
over
70
questions
on
the
school
districts
via
email
and
have
integrated
them
into
the
questions
today.
This
form
is
being
recorded
and
aired
live
on
the
Cooper
City
channel,
the
ground
rule
of
asked
the
candidates
not
to
use
the
forum
recordings
for
campaign
purposes.
We
also
encourage
the
audience
not
to
record
the
forum
because
we
want
it
to
be
seen
in
its
entirety,
will
tell
you
how
to
access
the
form
video
at
the
end
of
tonight's
program.

B
C
I
would
like
to
thank
the
League
of
Women
Voters
for
organizing
this
forum.
Thank
you.
My
background
and
experiences
have
prepared
me
to
be
a
school
board.
Member
I
have
valued
education
in
my
own
life
earning
a
bachelor's
degree
with
honors
and
chemistry
for
UC,
Santa
Cruz
and
a
PhD
in
analytical
chemistry,
from
the
University
of
North
Carolina
I
have
25
years
experience
working
in
Silicon,
Valley
technology
companies,
I
am
the
author
or
co-author
of
five
patents.
C
Three
books
and
25
publications,
mostly
in
peer-reviewed
scientific
journals,
I,
understand
the
importance
of
an
excellent
education
to
a
successful
career.
When
my
children
were
students
at
homestead,
I
was
a
volunteer
in
school
activities,
mostly
in
marching
band
and
speech
and
debate.
I've
been
teaching
chemistry
and
physics
at
lynbrook
for
over
10
years.
I
am
familiar
with
many
of
the
issues
which
confront
the
school
board
and
I
am
ready
to
take
on
this
responsibility.
C
D
Young
hi
good
evening,
my
name
is
Jenny
and
I
appreciate
League
of
Women
Voters
organized
this
forum
for
this
community
and
I
appreciate
your
hair
I'm,
a
mother
of
two
children
in
public
schools.
One
is
in
fremont
Union
High,
School
District,
the
other
one
is
cusd
cupertino
Union,
High,
School
District
I
moved
to
be
error
in
1999,
as
a
parent
I
deeply
understand
the
most
apparent
expectation
and
concern
on
public
school
I
also
understand
how
suggest
for
of
student
star.
D
First
I'm
passionate
on
school
and
community
services,
I
junk
PTSA
and
the
school
site
council
met
I'm
a
school
site
council
member
I,
actively
involved
in
teachers,
appreciation
day
international
day
and
chinese
new
year
day,
sick.
A
second
is
my
background
and
experience
helped
me
realized
that
good
communication
is
very
important
in
your
district
between
the
district
and
stakeholders.
Parents
I
think.
E
Thank
You,
Marianne
being
on
the
board
for
the
last
four
years,
has
been
great
preparation
for
the
next
four
years.
During
that
time,
I've
read
over
15,000
pages
of
board
material
and
asked
over
700
questions
in
advance
of
the
board
meeting.
I
have
attended
hundreds
of
events
where
I've
created
relationships
with
and
gotten
feedback
from
parents,
teachers,
students
and
other
community
members.
E
In
addition,
in
the
first
half
of
my
professional
career,
I
worked
in
human
resources
at
Intel,
seagate
agro
systems
and
bowing
in
that
role,
I
learned
the
importance
of
communication
in
an
organization,
the
value
of
an
open
door
policy
and
the
importance
of
an
ethically
driven
management
team
that
is
committed
to
excellence.
I
founded
a
company
20
years
ago.
B
D
On
let
me
continue
my
question
my
answer
of
last
question.
That
is
also
the
answer
for
this
question:
okay,
Freeman
Union,
High,
School,
District
locates
at
stand
of
circumventing
we
have
immigrants
of
multiple
culture.
Asian
student
is
the
56
56
percent
of
all
students.
His
pennies
Hispanic
student
is
the
fifteen
percent.
Total
is
71
percent.
D
Most
of
them
are
wrist
up
in
first-generation
immigrants
family.
If
I'm
elected
I
like
to
be
the
bridge
between
the
district
and
the
parents,
because,
as
the
first
generation
immigrant
and
the
current
parent
I
understand
their
expectation
and
concern,
I
know
how
to
help
them
involving
current
education
system
and
dedicate
for
it.
E
The
reason
I'm
running
is
I've
had
four
children,
my
wife
and
I
have
raised
four
children
who
have
really
benefited
from
an
excellent
education
through
our
schools
and
I
want
to
give
back
to
the
community.
I
want
others
in
our
community
to
experience
the
same
excellent
education
that
we've
had
I
want
to
maintain
excellence
in
our
school
district,
both
in
terms
of
student
outcome
and
in
order
to
continue
to
attract
outstanding
families
into
our
community.
E
C
Nancy
Newton
is
going
to
be
retiring
from
the
board
in
December,
and
somebody
will
be
replacing
Nancy
Newton
and
sitting
in
that
seat,
and
my
feeling
is
that
I
have
the
background
and
experience
to
do
that.
Job
and
it's
a
subject
that
interests
me
and
I.
Think
that,
with
my
ten
years
of
experience
in
the
classroom,
that
I
can
serve
the
students
and
the
parents
in
the
district.
Well
I
have
an
excellent
understanding
of
many
of
the
issues
involved,
and
that
is
why
I
chose
to
run
for
the
board.
B
E
So,
at
all
of
our
board
members,
we
have
these
big
place.
Mat
shaped
objects
which
lists
all
our
roles
and
responsibilities.
So
it
continues
to
reinforce
us
and
remind
us
what
our
role
and
responsibilities
are
and
there's
three
main
ones
that
are
listed.
One
is
to
be
to
listen
to
the
voice
of
the
community
and
be
a
representative
of
that
community,
and
it
means
be
a
representative
of
voices
from
skyline
Boulevard,
all
the
way
to
San
Francisco
Bay
in
our
school
district
boundaries,
to
listen
to
loud
voices
in
quiet
voices,
all
voices.
B
C
I
would
echo
what
Jeff
has
said
about
the
importance
of
listening
to
the
to
the
stakeholders,
but
one
thing
I
would
like
to
point
out
is
I
feel
the
district
is
quite
well
managed
we're
one
of
the
top
scoring
districts
in
the
in
the
country,
and
we
have
excellent
labor
relations
with
the
teachers
union
and
the
staff
union,
and
the
financial
management
is
quite
good.
We
actually
have
small
surpluses,
which
are
often
distributed
to
teachers
at
the
end
of
the
ordering
and
at
the
end
of
the
fiscal
year.
C
B
D
D
Okay,
the
community
has
some
tough
time
in
the
past
eight
years
on
communications
with
some
board
members,
and
there
is
some
arguments
in
the
communities
so
I'm
thinking
that
as
a
board
member,
it's
very
important
to
set
up
certain
time
meet
with
community
members
personally,
listen
to
them
talk
with
them
face
by
face
it's
very
important.
The
second
one
is
that
board
member
must
be
responsible
for
the
stakeholders
and
parents.
Students
always
put
student
first,
because
we
are
the
board
member
of
school
district.
The
third
one
is
to
conserve
with
you
on
budget
Thank.
B
C
That
the
board
could
take-
and
in
many
cases
already
does
I-
think
to
establish
trust
is
mostly
through
communication,
and
much
of
that
is
done
on
the
district
website,
which
contains
a
tremendous
amount
of
information
about
what
goes
on
in
the
district
from
the
financial
information
to
what
what
classes
are
offered
in
the
district
schools.
There
are
also
financial
reports
to
the
community,
and
the
board
meetings
are,
of
course
open
to
the
public
and
when
there's
a
particularly
controversial
issue
that
the
board
is
going
to
be
dealing
with,
the
board
recognizes
this.
C
E
Yeah,
it
is
going
to
sound,
like
you
just
heard
this,
but
I
think
communication
is
what's
most
important
in
communication
needs
to
change.
The
challenges
of
our
communication
are
different
now
than
they
were
just
a
few
years
ago,
and
the
needs
for
communication
and
I'm
going
to
talk
more
about
this.
In
my
closing
statement,
so
stay
tuned,
the
we
we
need
to
massively
increase
our
communication
with
a
with
a
community
in
many
different
in
new
creative
ways
in
the
school
district
is
already
doing
that
in
many
ways.
E
Facebook
were
several
thousand
followers
now
doing
really
well
on
there.
The
district
is
looking
into
providing
lot
more
information
for
the
community
to
help
to
help
provide
detailed
and
understanding
of
our
really
complex
systems
so
again,
connecting
with
the
community
also
is
board
member
to
be
out
in
the
community.
More
and
more,
that's
more
and
more
important.
D
Yin
no
problem,
yeah,
yeah
I,
think
it's
very
important
to
build
a
chest
between
the
district
and
a
community
and
as
a
board
member.
The
most
important
thing
is
that
he
or
she
has
the
heart
serving
for
stakeholders:
the
parent,
the
student,
not
a
special
interest
group
as
a
hundred
percent
grassroot
candidate
I,
would
do
that
for
the
whole
community
and
because
I'm
not
back
by
any
special
interest
group,
I
will
say
that
a
community,
the
board
meeting
is
good
for
communication
for
community
members
to
express
their
opinion.
D
B
E
D
D
So
if
we
get
a
good
way
to
communicate
with
this
Jake
with
parents,
the
stakeholders,
then
it
will
be
very
good
to
build
up
the
chest
and
also
that
have
all
the
stakeholders.
The
support
is
chick
work
and
also,
I
think
the
district
should
take
community
input
as
much
as
they
could,
as
we
all
know
that
Freeman
Union
High
School
is
top
this
chick
in
the
California
and
also
in
American.
Everyone
want
to
make
it
a
district
better
and
better.
C
The
question
I
believe
was:
what
is
the
number
one
priority
of
the
board,
and
why
and
why?
Well
the
number
one
priority
of
the
board
is
to
provide
the
highest
quality
education
to
the
students.
We've
heard
several
means
by
which
that
can
be
achieved.
Listening
to
the
community,
especially,
is
a
major
one,
but
what
it
comes
down
to
is
what
is
the
board
doing
to
provide
the
best
education
to
the
students
and
the
major?
C
What
I
see
is
the
major
criterion
for
success.
There
is
financial
management,
if
you
don't
have
wise
financial
management
you're,
not
going
to
be
able
to
provide
the
resources
to
the
students
or
to
the
to
the
teachers
and
the
school
to
provide
the
best
education
to
the
students.
So
that
would
be
my
number
one.
Priority
would
be
to
in
wise
financial
management
and
that.
B
D
Freeman
union
high
school
district
is
basic,
8th
district,
which
means
we
have
a
lot
of
fund
from
Paso
tax,
so
it
is
kind
of
rich
district
compared
to
some
district
like
a
cappuccino,
Union,
School,
District,
okay,
that's
a
different
formula
and,
as
the
board
member
I
would
say,
we
need
to
be
conservative
and
used
to
fund
efficiently.
It
is
very
important
to
use
every
dollar
of
tax
payers
wisely,
so
as
a
small
business
owner.
My
experience
on
the
budget
is
that
I
will
only
use
the
menu
for
the
necessary
part.
C
C
The
top
budget
challenge
is
the
cost
of
living
around
here
and
our
difficulty
in
providing
compensation
to
our
employees
that
can
allow
them
to
live
in
this
district,
and
there
is
not
an
easy
solution
to
that.
Much
of
our
funds
is
restricted
by
law.
We
have
a
parcel
tax
to
supplement
that
if
we
wanted
to
increase
parcel
tax,
we
would
have
to
have
excellent
communication
with
the
with
our
constituency
and
the
voters
so
too,
so
that
the
voters
would
believe
that
the
money
would
be
spent
wisely
and
was
in
the
best
interests
of
the
district.
E
I,
I
think
our
number
one
budget
issue
is
the
high
cost
of
living
in
is
it's
it's
a
high
cost
of
housing
in
particular,
I,
it's
as
we
as
those
costs
continue
and
as
there
are
so
high,
it's
going
to
become
more
and
more
difficult
to
attract
and
retain
our
highly
skilled,
highly
valued
teachers
and
staff.
I.
E
In
light
of
this,
increasing
cost
of
living,
I
just
was
at
an
event
before
I
came
over
here
today
and
was
talking
to
a
teacher
who
said
that,
after
a
year
of
looking
for
a
house,
they
finally
found
one
that
they
could
move
into
that's
fairly
local,
so
it
took
them
a
year
before
that
they
were
living
very
far
out
of
the
area.
So
it's
just
one
example.
E
B
C
Well,
common
core
is
deals
only
with
math
and
English.
So,
first
of
all,
let
me
talk
about
my
own
experience
as
a
science
teacher.
It
doesn't
have
much
effect
at
all
in
math,
we've
set
up
a
math
study
committee
and
the
purpose
of
the
study
committee
is
to
figure
out
how
to
implement
common
core
and
math,
and
the
study
committee
has
math.
Teachers
has
administrators
and
they're
working
together
to
come
up
with
a
good
method
of
implementing
Common
Core.
C
Now,
in
my
reading
of
the
common
core
standards
in
math,
what
I
found
is
that
even
before
Common
Core
came
out,
we
were
already
doing
a
lot
of
the
specifics
that
were
involved
in
common
core.
So
I
don't
see
it
as
a
major
revolution
in
our
math
teaching
to
switch
to
common
core
I'm
less
familiar
with
what's
happening
in
English,
and
that
would
be
something
I
need
to
learn
more
about.
Okay,.
D
Come
on
course
shall
bring
us
a
different
way
of
Education.
The
goal
of
common
core
is
critical
thinking,
communication,
collaboration
and
innovation,
but
I
heard
some
complaints
on
common
core,
especially
on
math
parents
complained
Common,
Core,
math,
slow
down
the
pace
of
math
progress.
Those
companies
companies
is
specially
large
in
elementary
and
the
middle
school
level.
Math.
On
the
teacher
side,
some
teachers
have
a
tough
time
to
be
used
to
teaching
common
core,
but
as
if
I
know,
the
situation
is
improving
gradually.
E
So
common
core
hasn't
had
as
big
an
impact
on
our
high
school
as
it
has
on
the
elementary
schools.
Is
we
heard
earlier
today
and
that's
for
a
couple
of
reasons.
One
is
we
had
in
great
foresight
already
began
to
focus
our
teachers
on
teaching
critical
thinking
and
also
the
close
reading
that
is
very
close
reading
in
the
English
language,
where
you
look
at
key
points
of
a
sentence,
or
even
words,
of
a
sentence
to
break
down
what
the
author
meant
so
in.
E
In
fact,
when
that
happened,
when
my
son
was
in
high
school
and
they
made
that
transition,
he
said
he
didn't
recognize
any
difference,
because
they
already
were
doing
that
critical
thinking
and
analytical
close
reading
in
project
oriented
learning.
So
he
didn't
notice
that
and-
and
in
so
we're
I-
think
very
well
ahead
of
the
curve
on
common
core.
Okay.
B
B
D
If
you
see
on
my
platform,
the
first
one
is
balance
the
enrollment
okay,
because
we
have
some
overcrowded
schools
like
Cupertino
high
school
has
almost
2300
students,
but
lynbrook
high
school
is
less
than
1,800
students.
So,
in
this
way,
I
was
support
that
we
transfer
several
hundred
students
from
Cupertino
hi
to
lynbrook
high,
which
boy
both
but
which
will
benefit
both
schools.
D
E
E
Some
are
bigger
than
others,
but
in
terms
of
classroom
capacity
and
students
per
classroom.
There's
really
not
that
much
of
a
difference
with
most
of
our
schools,
the
issue
of
lynbrook
high
school
being
with
a
loan
dropping
enrollment.
There
is
being
addressed
by
the
Citizens
Advisory
Committee,
it's
a
committee
that
sounds
like
it's
doing
great
job
great
job
I've
been
reading
the
minutes
from
that
group
and
it's
a
group
of
people
who
are
working
really
really
hard
to
come
up
with
some
excellent
decisions.
B
E
In
the
district
and
I
can
quite
confidently
say
it
hasn't,
our
students
continue
to
perform
very
well
we've
had
we
continue
to
have
outstanding
performance
now,
I'll
talk
a
little
bit
more
about
that
later,
and
the
reason
for
that
is
because
there's
been
very
good
planning
as
to
classroom
construction,
so
we've
the
school
district,
it
is,
has
added
several
classrooms
just
in
time
at
several
of
our
school
campuses,
so
we've
been
staying
ahead
of
the
curve.
The
district
has
been
staying
ahead
of
the
curve.
E
C
Like
to
agree
with
mr.
mo
there,
the
test
results
show
that
there
has
been
no
decline.
If
anything,
there's
been
an
increase
in
performance
of
students
in
the
district
and
the
the
other
thing
is
that
the
increase
in
property
tax
values,
as
the
result
of
us
coming
out
of
the
recession,
has
enabled
us
to
keep
pace
with
the
dollars
spent
per
student.
B
B
Now
we'll
turn
to
a
question
that
we
gave
the
candidates
in
advance
to
give
them
an
opportunity
to
comment
on
something
that
we
did
not
ask
them
about
this
evening
and
let's
see
mr.
Rockland,
how
about
you
respond
first,
and
that
question
is:
would
you
please
state
and
answer
a
question
you
wish
you
had
been
asked:
okay,.
C
I'll
ask:
how
have
you
prepared
yourself
to
serve
on
the
board?
First
of
all,
I've
been
a
classroom
teacher
for
11
years,
so
I
know
what
goes
on
in
the
classroom
and
I've
been
collaborating
with
my
fellow
teachers.
So
I
have
an
excellent
understanding
of
how
teachers
work
together
in
order
to
solve
problems
in
education
and
to
come
up
with
educational
plans.
E
Question
I
would
ask,
is
what
is
the
state
of
our
school
district?
It
is
outstandingly
successful.
Let
me
just
rattle
off
a
few
statistics:
we're
a
top-four
I'm
performing
High
School
District
in
California,
based
on
statewide
Caspi
testing.
Seventy-Seven
percent
of
our
graduates
were
eligible
for
UC
CSU
permission.
It
admission
compared
to
forty
two
percent
statewide
21
purse
to
twenty
one
percent
of
the
students
in
the
world
who
received
a
perfect
score
in
AP
computer
science
test
were
from
this
district.
Our
schools
do
outstanding
in
sports
and
have
a
strong
award-winning
performance,
arch
programs.
E
We
have
the
best
FBLA
and
robotics
teams
in
the
country.
We
have
an
outstanding
special
ed
program:
students
with
disabilities
in
our
district
score
two
and
a
half
times
higher
than
the
state
and
meeting
language
arts
standards
and
six
times
higher
in
meeting
math
standards.
The
list
goes
on
and
on.
We
should
all
be
proud
of
the
success
of
our
school
district
because
we
have
all
had
a
hand
in
it.
D
Ok,
I
want
to
mention,
if
I'm
elected,
a
supporter
member,
I'm
not
just
working
for
the
power
and
students
and
stakeholders
of
our
district.
A
bit
also
work
for
the
teachers
of
our
district
in
the
heart
of
Silicon,
Valley
or
teachers
has
to
face
the
pressure
of
housing
market
with
limited
income
I
like
to
help
our
teachers
of
affordable
housing
program,
a
chance
to
talk
with
San
Jose
City
Councilmember
chaplains,
and
he
support
my
idea.
D
B
E
Even
though
we
have
a
highly
successful
school
district,
we
faced
many
challenges.
I
attended
a
seminar
recently
that
call
this
the
age
of
social
disruption,
just
like
technological
disruption,
it
can
bring
on
positive
change.
Is
you
held
up
the
stop
sign?
Yes,
sir
positive
change
as
long
as
it
is
rooted
in
truth,
in
fact,
in
this
new
era,
communication
has
raised
to
a
whole
new
level.
D
100-Percent
grassroot
candidate,
like
all
of
you
and
I'm,
apparent
like
old
parents,
so
I
will
work
for
the
parents,
the
student
and
stakeholders.
Definitely
I
will
set
up
the
communication
way
for
all
stakeholders.
If
you
lactate
I,
will
have
a
communication
time
spot
open
for
everyone
on
any
issue
that
we
can
have
face-to-face
communication
once
so
well,
and
you
can
reach
me
easily,
I'll
be
the
bridge
of
different
groups
and
parties.
D
The
second
is
I
will
help
many
community
members
stakeholders
involving
district
events,
as
if
I
know
many
parents,
including
first
January
immigrants,
they
love
to
involve
in
activity
of
schools
and
communities,
but
you
do
language
barrier
and
the
limited
knowledge
they
don't
know
how
to
do
it.
So
I
will
encourage
parents
and
students
not
just
to
make
effort
academic
development,
but
also
our
development
I
hope,
one.
Our
high
school
students
graduate
they
not
only
get
a
diploma.
D
C
Board
members
must
always
be
aware
that
their
decisions
should
be
made
to
support
the
education
of
all
students
from
the
strongest
students
to
those
who
need
the
most
help.
I
don't
have
a
narrow
agenda,
I'm
not
out
to
advance
the
interests
of
a
single
group.
I
will
serve
all
students
and
all
members
of
the
community
I
have
shown
with
my
choices
in
life
that
I
value
education,
I
have
been
successful
in
private
industry
and
I
know.
C
The
importance
of
education
to
success
in
one's
career,
I
have
been
a
parent
of
students
in
the
district
and
I
was
involved
in
the
schools
as
a
volunteer.
At
that
time,
I
am
an
active
member
of
the
community,
and
I
have
been
a
sunnyvale
resident
for
36
years.
Most
importantly,
I
have
been
a
science
teacher
at
lynbrook
for
over
10
years.
I
know
what
goes
on
in
the
classroom.
My
education
and
experience
has
prepared
me
to
serve
the
district
well
on
the
school
board.
Thank
you.
Thank.
