Hello
I'm
sergeant
Vince
Valdez,
with
your
monthly
police,
update,
we're
going
to
talk
about
the
set
team
each
summer,
the
level
of
all
activity
increases
in
the
city.
The
police
department
is
busy
when
the
weather
starts
to
warm
up
until
late
into
the
fall
with
all
the
activity
comes.
An
increase
in
a
variety
of
police
calls
some
dangerous,
so
the
department
has
taken
measures
over
the
last
few
years
to
address
these
issues
with
an
increase
of
gang
activity
and
weapons
related
cases.
A
The
department
has
deployed
the
set
team
or
special
enforcement
team
to
respond
wherever
they
are
needed
throughout
the
city.
The
set
team
is
comprised
of
six
officers
who
are
assigned
on
a
full-time
basis
for
the
duration
of
the
summer.
The
first
watch
or
midnight
shift
assigns
two
of
their
officers
to
the
set
team
working
as
a
two-person
unit.
There
are
no
less
than
four
cars
supervised
by
a
sergeant
each
night
the
team
works
during
the
week
and
weekends.
The
set
team
concentrates
on
getting
weapons
off
the
street
and
dealing
with
violent
crime
and
gang
activity.
A
Since
April
seventeenth,
there
have
been
seven
guns,
three
knives
brass
knuckles
and
even
a
machete
taken
off
the
street
by
set
with
the
warm
weather
and
school
out
for
the
summer,
youth
find
their
favorite
places
to
hang
out
one
of
the
oldest
places
to
hang
out
on
weekend.
Nights
is
popularly
known
as
the
lube.
This
is
the
west
end
of
the
downtown
area
that
is
located
between
6th
Street
and
17th
from
Grand
to
locust.
This
has
historically
been
a
place
to
show
off
muscle
cars
and
for
young
men
and
women
to
meet.
A
The
police
department
has
always
been
active
there,
but
with
the
influx
of
people
living
downtown
in
new
developments
or
remodeled
properties,
there
have
been
more
complaints
of
noise,
violence
and
open
drug
and
alcohol
use.
The
push
team
or
unit
was
created
to
concentrate
on
the
loop
and
attempt
to
bring
some
peace
and
security
to
the
new
downtown
inhabitants,
monitor
traffic
and
to
ensure
the
safety
of
the
young
people
who
regularly
visit
the
loop.
A
The
push
unit
is
made
up
of
two
officers
and
one
sergeant
assigned
to
the
loop
on
Friday
and
Saturday
nights
from
7pm
to
3pm.
The
officers
assist
patrol
in
a
variety
of
enforcement
issues
and
routine
calls
within
the
loop
and
could
be
called
to
other
areas
near
the
loops,
such
as
the
court
Avenue
entertainment
district
to
assist
officers.
There
ragbrai
roll
soon
Des
Moines.
For
the
first
time
since
1997
thousands
of
riders
will
pass
through
des
moines,
making
a
variety
of
stops
and
attending
many
events
to
celebrate
the
ride.
A
There
will
be
street
parties
and
bridge
parties
around
Court.
Avenue
traffic
will
come
to
a
standstill
at
many
intersections
as
the
writers
make
their
way
through
the
city.
There
will
be
approximately
24
or
more
officers
to
greet
the
writers
and
ensure
their
safety
as
they
enter.
The
city
officers
will
be
assigned
around
water
works
park
where
many
bikers
will
spend
the
night
as
they
leave
the
city.
A
64
officers
will
be
assigned
to
the
task
of
directing
traffic
as
they
exit
the
city
with
increased
outdoor
activity,
whether
it
be
foot,
traffic,
bicycle
traffic,
motorcycles
and
just
general
hot
weather.
Advisories,
the
Des
Moines
police
department
will
be
very
active
to
make
sure
the
city
is
safe,
so
we
can
enjoy
the
summer.
