Hello
I'm
captain
Steven
brown,
with
the
Des
Moines
fire
department
and
I'd
like
to
talk
today
about
ice
and
cold
water
safety.
According
to
the
United
States
Center
for
Disease
Control,
there
are
about
4,000
drownings
in
the
United
States
each
year,
and
over
half
of
these
incidents
occur
in
cold
water,
cold
water
is
a
water
temperature,
less
than
70
degrees.
Fahrenheit,
it
drains
away
body
heat
25
to
30
times
faster
than
air
and
the
lower
the
temperature
of
the
water.
A
The
faster
the
onset
of
hypothermia
hypothermia
is
the
excessive
lowering
of
the
body
temperature,
a
drop
in
the
core
body
temperature
below
95
degrees,
causes,
shivering,
confusion,
loss
of
muscle,
strength
and,
if
not
treated
in
reverse,
hypothermia,
leads
to
unconsciousness
and
death.
The
number
one
golden
rule
is
that
the
only
safe
ice
is
at
of
a
skating
rink,
but
if
you
do
venture
out
on
Isis
winter,
there
are
a
number
of
things
that
you
can
do
to
ensure
a
fun
time
gauging
the
ice
is
very
difficult.
A
There
is
no
such
thing
as
a
hundred
percent
safe
ice,
never
walk
or
drive
on
cloudy
ice
only
go
on
clear,
thick
nice.
The
consistency
of
Isis
never
constant,
it
may
be
flat
on
top,
but
not
on
the
bottom.
Snow
cover
on
ice
acts
like
an
insulator
making
ice
former
and
weaker
ice
formed
over
running
water,
like
streams
and
rivers
is
more
dangerous
than
that
formed
over
standing
water
like
in
lakes
and
ponds.
A
The
general
thickness
guide
life
for
clear
eyes
if
it
is
less
than
two
inches
stay
off
four
inches
or
more
safe
for
walking
and
ice
fishing
on
foot
five
inches
and
more
probably
safe
for
an
atv
or
snowmobile,
eight
to
twelve
inches,
probably
safer.
Small
cars
and
light
pickups
and
12
to
15,
probably
safer
in
trucks,
never
go
out
on
the
ice
and
load
always
have
a
buddy
with
you
and
Carrie
safety
equipment.
A
If
you
do
go
by
yourself,
tell
someone
of
where
you
will
be,
and
when
you
plan
on
coming
home,
the
safety
equipment
can
consist
of
a
throw
rope,
a
life
vest
ice
picks
and
some
type
of
ice
you
or
accessory
to
give
you
grip
on
the
ice.
If
somebody
does
fall
it
in
the
ice
or
cold
water.
The
first
step
is
to
call
91
to
alert
emergency
personnel,
do
not
go
out
into
ice
or
go
into
the
water
many
times
it
would
be.
A
Rescue
becomes
victims
themselves
if
possible,
reach
out
to
the
victim
with
a
hand
or
branch
if
this
will
not
work
through
a
rope
or
a
buoyant
device
to
victim
for
them
to
grab,
and
if
there
is
a
boat
row
out
to
the
person
or
push
the
boat
to
them.
If
you
are
the
one
who
goes
in
the
water,
try
not
to
panic
turn
in
the
direction
you
came
in
place,
your
hands
and
arms
on
the
unbroken
surface.
A
Work
forward
by
kicking
your
feet
once
out
remain
lying
on
ice,
do
not
stand
up
and
roll
away
from
the
whole
crawl
back
from
the
tracks,
keeping
your
weight
distributed
until
you
return
to
solid
ice.
Hopefully,
by
following
these
cold
water
and
ice
safety
tips,
you
will
be
able
to
enjoy
a
safe
and
uneventful
time.
This
winter
season.
