A
Carnation
city,
a
staple
of
modern-day
flower,
bouquets
first
blossomed
in
the
1880s
right
here
in
Englewood.
The
state's
climate,
warm
during
the
day
with
chilly
nights,
is
perfect
for
yielding
hundreds
of
thousands
of
acres
of
colorful
carnations
in
1910,
a
Denver
man
by
the
name
of
John
Valentine
began
scouting
places
to
grow
and
sell
flowers.
A
He
developed
a
plot
of
land
south
of
Hamden
Avenue
and
started
a
new
company
Park
floral,
once
Valentine
came
up
with
the
slogan
say
it
with
flowers.
He
found
a
way
to
spread
that
message
across
the
country.
Valentine
founded,
floral
telegraph,
delivery,
known
today
as
FTD.
The
network
enables
local
florists
to
fill
out
of
state
orders
insuring
the
freshest
flowers
are
delivered
in
each
city.
In

A
The
signature
bloom
year-round
by
1945,
the
carnation
flower,
became
a
symbol
of
Englewood.
Nine
years
later,
a
resolution
was
passed
by
the
chamber
of
commerce
designating
engli
wood.
As
the
carnation
city,
the
public,
embraced
the
ordained
flower
and
the
carnation
industry
became
integral
to
the
city's
economy
at
least
13
greenhouses,
including
one
where
the
famous
gothic
theatre
now
stands
harvested
more
than
5
million
blooms.
Every
year,
the
popularity
of
the
carnation
boom
when
First
Lady
Mamie
Eisenhower,
proclaimed
her
affection
for
the
flower.
A
The
Colorado
native,
who
grew
up
in
Denver,
received
an
air
express
delivery
of
200
carnations
to
the
White
House.
Every
week,
just
five
years
after
the
common
flower
became
synonymous
with
Englewood
Hermann
ole
einar
discovered
how
to
tint
white
carnations
by
immersing.
The
flower
stems
in
a
special
dye,
a
liner
shared
the
secret
to
creating
colorful
carnations
and
eventually,
the
technique
spread
from
Englewood
to
all
corners
of
the
world,
creating
a
flower
for
the
ages,
and
it
all
happened
right
here
in
what
we
now
call
Englewood
Colorado.
