griffin
of
inglewood
in
the
early
1930s,
a
discarded
relic
from
the
annals
of
denver
history,
was
rescued
and
found
a
new
home
right
here
in
the
city
of
englewood
colorado,
the
relic
a
four
and
a
half
foot
tall
griffin
statue
currently
looms
over
the
stairwell
at
the
englewood
civic
center
and
watches
over
its
gifts
a
century
earlier.
It
was
one
of
four
statues
that
graced
the
arapahoe
county
courthouse
at
15th
and
tremont.

courthouse
was
torn
down.
One
of
the
zinc
griffins
was
brought
to
the
inglewood
city
hall.
At
that
time,
city
hall
was
located
in
the
alexander
film
company
building
and
the
griffin
was
perched
atop
the
roof
griffins
with
the
head
and
wings
of
an
eagle
in
the
body
of
a
lion
were
used
to
guard
golden
treasures.
In
ancient
greece,
in
englewood,
the
griffon
statue
was
used
to
save
lives
before
radio
communications,
a
red
bulb,
was
placed
in
the
mouth
of
the
griffon.

shining
bulb
served
as
a
signal
to
police
and
fire
crews
that
their
services
were
urgently
needed.
In
the
mid-1930s,
the
griffin
was
moved
to
englewood's
new
firehouse,
located
at
gerard
and
bannock
streets.
The
griffin's
shining
red
emergency
bulb
was
retired.
When
the
fire
department
installed
a
sophisticated
telephone
service.
