From YouTube: Englewood Moments in History - Gold Rush
Description
Today we are proud to launch our new video series "Englewood Moments in History". We will be featuring a new video on the second Thursday of every month. Today's video focuses on the Gold Rush in Englewood, Colorado.
A
It
was
July
31st
1858
when
the
area
now
known
as
the
city
of
Englewood
was
located
in
a
vast
region,
referred
to
as
the
great
American
desert.
On
that
day,
an
extraordinary
event
happened
at
little
dry
creek
that
helped
shape
the
American
West
in
1850
miner
William
green
Russell
found
traces
of
gold
while
traveling
to
Colorado
during
a
prospecting
expedition
to
California
the
discovery
inspired
Russell
to
return
and
on
February
17th
1858.
A
After
four
long
months
of
exhausting
travel,
the
band
of
gold
hungry
prospectors
arrived
on
the
banks
of
Cherry
Creek,
and
the
treasure
hunt
commenced
nine
days
later,
with
very
little
gold
in
their
pockets
or
pans.
Most
of
the
original
prospecting
group
returned
east
and
abandoned
their
dream
of
striking
it
rich.
A
Shortly
thereafter,
a
whisky
trader
named
John
Cantrell
visited
the
camp
and
returned
home
to
Kansas
City
with
a
bag
filled
with
gold
bearing
dirty
the
Kansas
City
Journal
of
Commerce
trumpeted
the
news
with
screaming
headlines
and
within
six
short
months.
40,000
people
migrated
to
the
area.
The
rest,
as
they
say,
is
history
that
extraordinary
day
on
July,
31st
1858
sparked
the
gold
rush
and
what
would
later
be
known
as
the
Great
Western
expansion,
and
it
all
started
right
here
in
what
we
now
call
Englewood
Colorado.
