Shortly
after
her
death,
her
mother
used
the
child's
life
savings
and
donated
the
small
sum
to
begin
a
foundation
for
an
Inglewood
library
on
May
14
1920,
an
association
library
was
founded
and
began
serving
the
public
with
the
skin
20
books
on
hand,
a
small
broom
is
rented
in
a
former
mortuary
on
South
Broadway.
It
was
owned
by
JC
Jones
Inglewood.
First
mayor
public
donations
were
collected
to
cover
the
$35
a
month
rent
by
1921,
the
Inglewood
City
Council
voted
to
pay
$100
a
month
to
cover
operating
expenses.
A
Patrons
could
check
out
one
book
for
two
weeks
if
they
fail
to
return
the
books
overdue,
fines
would
cost
them
two
cents
per
day
as
a
library's
collection
of
books
grew
it
soon
overwhelmed
the
small
space
and
in
1929
the
library
moved
into
the
new
Chrysler
Building
on
South
Broadway,
the
same
building
that
housed
a
brand-new
JCPenney.
The
new
space
had
enough
shelves
to
fit
7,000
books.

series
of
moves
followed,
including
a
rented
room.

What
was
originally
part
of
the
tillery's
and
later
the
alexander
film
company
in
1951,
the
Englewood
City,
Hall
and
library,
was
established
on
south
banner
books
were
regularly
checked
out
by
over
6,000
card
holders.
Eventually,
some
books
were
put
on
wheels.
The
roadrunner
bookmobile
took
off
in
the
60s
and
proved
to
be
a
popular
staple
of
the
community
for
nearly
30
years.
It
was
replaced
in
1991
by
a
colorful
new
bookmobile
named
the
rainbow
Express.
