Description

For over 20 years, Inglewood's Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Speech Contest has been the highlight of its annual King Day celebration. Contestants compete from Inglewood's public, private, and charter schools, as well as local churches. The categories for the speech contest competition are based on the following grade levels: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.

Participants were required to write their speech and submit it to a homeroom teacher or counselor. They then presented their speech orally to compete amongst their peers at their school or church. The winners from each school or church then competed citywide and were judged by a subcommittee of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Planning Committee. Speech contest participants in grades K-12 were asked to consider the topic, "Be the Change You Want to See."

Good morning my name is Nathan delos Santos I am six years old and diet, an old oak street elementary school.

The title of my speech is be the change you want to see. I want to make a difference in the world in my few years of life, I have always wondered why certain things are, as they are: I always catch myself, asking my mom and dad things like. Why do people live in the streets and ask for money? Why do people do bad things? I know that if I want to make a change, the change needs to start with me.

Michael Jackson in his song, man in the mirror, said I'm starting with the man in the mirror. I'm asking him to change his ways.

No message could have been any clearer if you want to make the world a better place, take a look at yourself and then make the change.

My mom and dad have always told me: I, need to study hard and begun school foot, so I can be somebody someday.

That is why I'm starting with me by making sure I am always following the roles and listening to my teachers, I believe that if everyone just listened to one another, our communities will be better with less violence. I.

We all want to be important to surpass others to achieve distinction to lead the parade, and the great issue of life is to harness the drum major instinct.
