The
city
adopted
new
policies
regarding
heavy
truck
traffic
and
worked
with
local
industry
to
reroute
industrial
traffic
from
the
historic
district
to
a
bypass
around
the
city.
The
public
private
partnership
resulted
in
the
elimination
of
thousands
of
overweight
trucks
from
the
central
business
district
downtown
in
March
2021.
The
city
formed
a
steering
committee
of
elected
officials,
residents,
business
owners
and
other
stakeholders
to
re-envision
how
Main
Street
could
become
a
safer,
more
welcoming
Avenue
for
over
300
000
tourists,
residents
and
businesses
that
visit
the
district
annually.

overall
construction
project
was
divided
into
four
phases.
After
applying
for
and
receiving
Federal
Highway
grants
totaling
15
million
dollars.
The
immediate
Improvement
plan
started
to
maintain
the
road
surface
until
the
full
replacement
project
could
start
in
2026.,
while
the
initial
construction
was
underway.
A
Crosswalk
safety
was
also
a
great
concern
due
to
pedestrians
being
struck
at
crosswalks
hook
this
into
account
and
saw
an
opportunity
to
test
traffic
calming
measures.
In
the
residential
section,
an
eight
block
section
was
reduced
from
four
lanes
to
two
with
a
center
turning
lane
designated
parking
and
safe
Zone
marked
with
hash
marks.
The
safe
Zone
created
an
area
for
drivers
to
safely
exit
their
vehicles
after
parking
and
visual
deterrent
for
moving
Vehicles,
providing
an
overall,
safer
environment.

city
is
currently
developing
construction
plans
for
phases,
two
and
three,
which
includes
a
full
replacement
of
the
roadway,
safer,
crosswalks
and
more
sidewalks
and
Lighting.
In
addition
to
the
planning
for
Madison's
Main
Street,
the
overall
emphasis
on
Place
making
is
demonstrated
by
enhancements
made
to
elevate
the
quality
of
life,
promote
tourism
and
attract
capital
investment
for
the
small
business
community.
