Description
Minneapolis City Council Meeting
https://lims.minneapolismn.gov
A
Good
morning,
everyone
I'm
Lisa
bender
I'm,
the
president
of
the
Minneapolis
City
Council,
welcome
to
City
Hall,
often
before
our
official
business.
We
begin
with
special
presentations
and
this
morning
it's
an
honor
to
be
here
to
recognize
October
as
breast
cancer
awareness
month
and
October
11th
as
metastatic
breast
cancer
awareness
day.
This
issue
is
very
personal
for
me:
I'm,
a
breast
cancer
survivor
diagnosed
nine
years
ago,
when
I
was
pregnant,
with
my
first
child
who's,
now,
eight
years
old,
a
thriving
third
grader
with
a
little
sister.
A
So
it's
often
you
know
a
mixed
month
for
us
survivors
where
we
get
to
celebrate
survival,
but
also
more
in
the
friends
that
we've
lost
and
see
how
much
farther
we
have
to
go
with
research
and
access
to
health
care,
so
I'm
so
happy
to
be
joined
by
our
friends
from
the
American
Cancer
Society
and
to
present
this
resolution
today,
so
I'll
read
the
resolution
and
then
turn
it
over
to
Emily
and
Amy
to
speak
about
their
work
and
an
event
coming
up.
Thank
you.
A
So
this
is
recognizing
October
as
breast
cancer
awareness
month
on
October
11th
as
metastatic
breast
cancer
awareness
day,
whereas
there
are
more
than
3.5
million
women
in
the
United
States
living
with
a
history
of
invasive
breast
cancer.
And
whereas
this
year,
4700
women
in
Minnesota
are
expected
to
be
diagnosed
with.
Breast
cancer
in
642
died
from
the
disease
and
whereas
breast
cancer
ranks
as
the
second
cause
of
cancer
death
in
women
and
whereas
breast
cancer
screening
has
been
found
to
reduce
breast
cancer
mortality
and
was
pressed
when
breast
cancers
are
detected
at
an
early
stage.
A
Now,
therefore,
be
it
resolved
that
the
mayor
and
the
city
council
do
hereby
declare
October
2019
to
be
Breast,
Cancer,
Awareness
Month
on
October
11th
2019
as
metastatic
breast
cancer
awareness
day
in
the
city
of
Minneapolis.
Thank
you
and
I
want
to
highlight
that
we
always
include
metastatic
breast
cancer
awareness
day
because
often
October
becomes
a
celebration
of
survival.
But
it's
really
important
to
remember
the
women
who
are
fighting
a
disease
that
has
no
cure
and
those
that
we
have
lost
and
I
really
want
to.
Thank
including.
A
Both
the
screening
that
we
need
to
make
sure
that
all
women
have
the
health
care
that
they
deserve,
regardless
of
income
regardless
of
race
and
ethnicity.
Where
we
see
these
staggering
racial
disparities
and
for
the
research
that
leads
to
life-saving
life-extending
drugs,
including
one
that
I
benefited
from
I.
B
C
Thank
You
president
bender,
so
much
for
sharing
your
story.
My
name
is
Emily
Maya
time
the
government
relations
director
for
the
American
Cancer
Society,
Cancer,
Action
Network,
or
the
advocacy
affiliate
of
the
American
Cancer
Society.
Our
work
is
to
empower
folks
to
share
their
stories
with
decision
makers
like
the
city
of
Minneapolis,
like
representatives
in
st.
Paul
and
in
DC,
to
fight
to
make
sure
that
everybody
has
access
to
breast
cancer.
Screenings,
like
you
were
saying,
regardless
of
income,
race,
ethnicity,
where
you
live
in
the
state
of
Minnesota,
everybody
should
have
access
to
life.
C
Screening
life-saving
medications,
life-saving
screenings.
We
advocate
for
research,
funding
at
the
federal
level
and
I
want
to
thank
the
city
of
Minneapolis
for
passing
policies
that
prevent
cancer,
and
so
we're
very
grateful
for
this
to
a
partner
with
the
city
of
Minneapolis
for
president
bender
for
her
leadership
on
this,
and
so
thank
you
for
being
a
champion
for
patients
and
survivors
in
Minnesota.
D
All
right,
my
name
is
amy
countryman
and
I'm
a
community
development
manager
make
them
at
the
American.
Cancer
Society
and
I
have
the
pleasure
of
being
the
manager
for
Making
Strides,
Against,
Breast
Cancer
event
coming
up
at
the
end
of
the
month
and,
as
you
mentioned,
I
mean
it
really
is
an
opportunity
for
celebration
for
survivorship.
But
it's
also
an
opportunity
to
remember
those
we've
lost
to
remember
that
our
fight
is
not
over
and
to
really
just
have
that
community
for
those
that
are
able
to
join
us.
D
We're
gonna
have
fun
fun
activities,
bring
your
kids
all
that
kind
of
all
that
kind
of
good
stuff.
But
it
really
is
just
a
great
opportunity
to
have
that
support
of
sisterhood
and
also
remember.
You
know
we
always
talk
about
breast
cancer
in
women,
but
breast
cancer
is
possible
in
men
as
well,
and
we
just
need
to
recognize
that
but
know
that
the
work
that
we're
doing
at
the
American
Cancer
Society
is
supporting
all
of
those
whose
lives
are
affected
by
breast
cancer.
E
A
A
Note
that
council
vice
president
Jenkins
that
counts
Mart
Ellison,
are
both
representing
the
city
in
a
national
forum,
each
of
them
in
separate
capacities,
and
we
thank
them
for
doing
that.
Now
we
messed
up
my
computer,
which
is
all
right,
so
we
have
a
quorum
for
today's
meeting.
The
agenda
for
today's
meeting
is
before
us.
Councilmember
Cunningham
has
before
you

Finally,
we
have
the
order
of
announcements.
Are
there
any
announcements
from
Council
members,
councilmember
Schrader?
Thank.
L
You,
madam
president,
I
just
want
to
alert
all
my
colleagues
that,
where
you
have
special
guests
today,
we
have
a
councilmember,
Allen
Archer
bunk
from
Atlanta
visiting
today,
just
to
learn
a
little
bit
more
about
zoning
code.
Well,
actually
just
a
code
enforcement,
and
it
is
something
that
personally
just
really
appreciate
her
visit,
especially
in
light
of
all
the
events
of
yesterday.
It's
a
good
reminder
that
things
can
happen
here
in
Minneapolis
that
can't
happen
in
other
parts
of
the
country
and
I'm
real,
proud
of
the
work
we
do
and
I
think
that's.
