Featured Speaker: GEORGIA FORT
The American media since its inception has exploited and misrepresented the image of black people on screen. Black face, typecasting, and newscasts saturated with black mugshots are ways media has perpetuated a false and inaccurate identity of African Americans. Media has at large served as a tool to dehumanize black people. Georgia Fort stated, it’s “…for those reasons and for my children and the future of our nation it is my duty to change the narrative. Creating visual stories about race and culture that build equity.” She is creating her own path as an independent journalist who is deeply connected to community
The events for Black History Month 2022 were presented in partnership with City of Minneapolis, Hennepin County, Minneapolis Black Employee Network, African American ERG, People of Color ERG and Communication and Engagement Services of Hennepin County.

Knowing
that
as
employees
of
the
city
of
minneapolis,
you
guys
are
really
at
this
intersection
of
it,
and
so
I
want
to
encourage
you
guys
if
you,
you
feel
comfortable
sharing
in
the
chat
just
how
how
you're
feeling
how
you're
coping?
I
think
that
it's
important
that,
when
we
come
together
as
community
collectively
that
we
also
create
space
to
just
be
real
and
be
authentic,
and
so
I
know
that
this
is
a
challenging
time.
Even
for
myself.
A
What's
on
your
mind,
but
from
a
very
basic
level,
I
do
want
to
start
with
the
definition
of
of
narrative,
what
what
is
narrative
and
what?
What
does
it
mean
to
change
the
narrative
and
so
narrative
from
a
very
basic
definition,
is
spoken
or
written
account
of
connected
events,
a
story,
and
so
sometimes
people
mistake.
My
work
of
changing
the
narrative
as
changing
the
truth,
and
that's
not
the
case
at
all.
A
To
point
to
a
recent
example:
one
that's
very
fresh,
for
example,
in
in
the
unfolding
of
information
about
amir
lock,
one
of
the
things
that
happened.
We
saw
the
release
of
photographs
of
amir's
gun
without
a
comment
from
his
family,
who
later
was
able
to
clarify
that
he
legally,
you
know,
had
that
gun
and
so
changing.
The
narrative
is
the
idea
of
amplifying
perspectives
that
are
often
left
out
of
mainstream
media
being
mindful
of
the
way
that
narratives
have
traditionally
been
harmful
to
communities
of
color
and
I'll
share
some
historical
examples
of
this.

actually
a
study.
That's
come
out
recently
by
howard
university
and,
if
you
guys
don't
take
anything
away
from
this
talk.
Take
this

It's
called

If
you

a

and
paper
write

you
have
your
cell
phone,
you
know
take
a
note
of
it

You
could
even
google
it
howard
university
has
started
this
study,
compiling
historical
examples
of
the
way
in
which
the
media
was
used
as
a
tool
to
perpetuate
racialized
violence
against
the
black
community,
and
so
this
is
not
an
accusation.
This
is
not
something
that
I'm
I'm
speaking
of
from
my
own
lived
experience.
A
This
is
based
on
evidence
and
and
historical
documentation
that
we've
uncovered
through
research
that
historically,
the
media
has
been
used
as
a
tool
to
perpetuate
stereotypes
and
harm
against
black
communities
before
going
further
in
light
of
black
history
month.
I
would
also
like
to
acknowledge
that,
as
a
black
woman,
a
biracial
woman
who
predominantly
covers
stories
about
the
black
community,
I
stand
on
the
shoulders
of
ida
b
wells
who
was
an
investigative
reporter
who
primarily
focused
her
work
on
documenting
lynchings
in
america.

It
does
have
the
ability
to
write
injustices,
but
it
also
has
the
ability,
when
used
inappropriately,
to
make
the
public
believe
that
a
lie
is
the
truth
as
quoted
by
malcolm
x,
and
so
I'm
excited
to
go
deeper
with
you
all
and
share
for
those
of
you
who
may
not
have
worked
in
in
journalism
or
in
mainstream
media
more
about
the
ethics
of
of
journalism,
and
so
one
thing
that
is
is
agreed
upon
within
the
industry.
Is
that
journalism
and
storytelling
and
news
is
supposed
to
be
unbiased,
balanced
and
objective.
A
That's
what
it's
supposed
to
be,
but
I
I
want
to
challenge
this
this
system
a
bit
because
we
know
based
on
the
inequities
that
have
been
produced
in
our
society,
that
it
has
not
always
been
balanced,
unbiased
and
objective,
and
so
I
asked
this
question:
how
many
times
have
you
heard?
George
floyd,
philando,
castile
or
jamar
clark
called
a
victim,
and
the
crazy
thing
is.
A
A
We
have
a
standard
within
the
industry
that
that
inherently
criminalizes
black
men
and
sometimes
black
women,
and
so
what
is
a
victim
right,
there's
a
lot
of
controversy
within
the
or
I
should
say
rather
than
controversy,
a
lot
of
dialogue
in
the
journalism
industry
about
the
use
of
the
word
victim
and
when
it's
appropriate
and
and
even
the
word
murder.
You
know,
there's
some
of
there's
some
legal
parameters
around
using
some
of
these
words
that
you
do
have
to
respect.

It
could
be
as
a
result
of
an
accident,
and
so
you
know
there
are
no
legal
parameters
on
why
we
cannot
call
a
person
a
victim,
and
I
think
that
we
should
be
more
mindful
of
of
evoking
compassion
and
empathy
with
the
narratives
that
we
create,
and
for
those
of
you
you
know,
I.
I
know
that
as
a
media
professional.
A
The
the
things
I'm
talking
about
today
are
very
hyper
focused
on
the
media
and
the
way
that
the
media
influences
the
way
that
we
think
right,
but
also
on
a
very,
very
basic
level.
These
things
also
apply
to
us
as
individuals
as
human
beings
as
church
members
as
neighbors
as
friends
all
living
in
this
community
people
who
have
most
likely,
you
guys
have
a
social
media
profile,
whether
it's
facebook
or
tick,
tock
or
twitter.
A
It's
very
important
and
so
going
to
some
of
those
examples
right
taking
this
outside
of
just
my
lived
experience
as
a
black
woman
in
this
industry,
but
pointing
to
some
evidence-based
examples
where
these
things
have
occurred
in
mainstream
media.
I
want
to
go
back
historically,
the
since
the
inception
of
media
we've
seen
blackface
and
we've
also
seen
stereotypes
perpetuated
through
films
and
and
even
newscasts,
and
and
so
we'll
we'll
go
into
that
here.

I,
as
a
black
woman
working
in
a
newsroom
during
my
time
in
mainstream
media,
I
often
saw
newscasts
that
were
saturated
with
mug
shots
of
black
people
and
in
the
chat,
if
you
know
who
these
five
young
men
are,
please
feel
free
to
to
share
that
in
the
chat.
But
we
oftentimes
would
show
up
in
newsrooms
conversations
and
and
ask
you
know
why
do
we
have
to
continuously
advocate
that
black
people
be
shown
in
a
capacity
other
than
just
through
through
mug
shots?

I
had
a
contractual
obligation
to
straighten
my
hair
to
obtain
a
european
standard
of
beauty,
and
while
that
is
the
industry
standard,
it
doesn't
mean
that
it's
right
it
doesn't
mean
that
it's
not
discriminatory
and
it
doesn't
mean
that
it
shouldn't
change,
and
so
I
personally
have
experienced
discrimination
in
in
working
in
mainstream
media.
But
again
outside
of
my
own
lived
experiences.
A
You
know
there's
these
examples
we
can
point
to,
and
I
see
that
addie
in
the
chat
said
the
central
park,
five,
that's
correct
and
were
they
guilty
or
were
they
innocent
and
so
by
the
court
of
law?
They
were
determined
to
be
innocent.
After
years
of
being
stereotyped
in
the
media
being
convicted
and
criminalized
in
the
media
as
being
guilty-
and
obviously
it
wasn't
just
something
that
the
media
did
by
themselves-
there
was
a
criminal
justice
system
behind
them.
That
was
also
deeming
them
to
be
guilty
as
well.

And
you
know
when
you,
you
examine
the
media
industry
even
beyond
news,
and
you
start
looking
at
the
film
industry
right.
We
we
go
back
and
you
think
about
since
the
inception
of
media
right
is,
is
the
the
picture
I'm
painting
here
since
the
inception
of
media.
We
have
had
these
stereotypes
perpetuated.
We
have
had
these
processes
and
systems
that
produce
stereotypes
and
harm
against
the
black
community,
including
typecasting.

A
We
would
see
black
businesses
burnt
to
the
ground,
and
so
this
is
just.
This
is
one
example,
but
there
are
hundreds,
as
as
you
will
see
in
the
print
and
hate
research
project
by
howard
university.
If
you
look
it
up,
and
this
here
coming
back
closer
to
home
in
duluth
minnesota
a
hundred
years
ago,
there
was
a
triple
lynching.
A
They
found
out
that
you
know
this.
This
young
girl,
irene
tuscan,
accused
the
circus
workers,
black
circus
workers,
who
were
in
duluth
minnesota.
She
accused
them
of
raping
her
and
then
based
on
a
doctor's
examination
that
came
came
out
later.
They
found
out
that
it
was
a
lie
and
that
she
had
involvement
with
a
man
that
she
was
trying
to
a
white
man.
She
was
trying
to
cover
up
from
her
parents.
She
didn't
want
them
to
know,
and
so
she
blamed
these
black
men.
A
A
So
the
current
police
chief
in
duluth
minnesota
is
the
great
nephew
of
irene
tuscan,
who
falsely
accused
three
black
circus
workers
of
rape,
and
you
know,
then
they
were
lynched
for
that.
And
so
it's
very
interesting
to
hear
his
his
his
perspective
of
growing
up
with
that
being
his
aunt
and
him
now
being
the
police
chief
in
duluth
minnesota
during
a
time
where
clearly,
relations
between
police
and
communities
of
color
are
very
tense,
and
so,
if
you
get
a
chance
to
look
that
interview
up,
it's
it's
very
powerful.

But
going
back
again
to
this
this
this
and
it's
not
an
idea.
I
don't
want
to
say
idea,
but
these
evidence
this
paper
trail
that
we
have
of
the
way
in
which
the
media
had
been
used
as
a
vehicle
to
perpetuate
stereotypes
and
other
harm,
and
sometimes
death
against
black
communities
and
communities
of
color
and
more
even
more
modern
day.
And
I
know
some
of
this
there's
some
intersection
with
you
guys
being
at
the
city
in
your
work.
But,
as
you
guys
know,
if
you
follow
me,
I
just
I'm.
A
I
have
to
keep
it
real
and,
and
then
this
is
these
are
facts
right.
The
first
press
release
that
was
issued
about
george
floyd
said
that
he
died
of
a
medical
complication,
and
we
know
that,
based
on
the
footage
that
was
captured
by
darnell
frazier,
that
that's
not
what
happened
and
then
also
in
a
court
of
law.
The
determination
made
by
a
jury
and
judge
cahill
is
that
that
is
not
what
happened.
A
And
so,
when
we
talk
about
narrative,
the
initial
narrative
about
george
floyd
was
that
he
died
of
a
medical
complication,
and
so
that
was
an
ins
a
clear
modern
day
incident
of
when
there
was
a
need
to
change
the
narrative
that
that
is
a
modern-day
example
of
a
time
where
the
media
again
was
used
as
a
vehicle
to
perpetuate
a
harmful
narrative
to
the
black
community,
and
so
I'm
sharing.
All
of
this
to
you
know
get
you
guys
to
understand
the
impact
that
this
has
on.
A
You
know
you
could
begin
to
hate
yourself
or
you
could
have
an
inferiority
complex,
because
what
the
world
is
telling
you
is
that
you
don't
matter
or
you're
not
enough.
It
can
also
show
up
as
oppression.
You
can
be
oppressed,
and
so
we
in
our
community
here
in
the
minneapolis
area,
we've
talked
a
lot
about
a
lot
about
criminal
justice
reform,
a
lot
about
economic
justice,
a
lot
about
racial
justice.

But
in
my
work,
what
I've
begin
to
identify
is
the
need
for
narrative
justice
right
circling
back
to
the
central
part.
Five,
and
that
question
I
asked
is
what
how
has
the
the
media
industry
reconciled
for
what
they've
done
and
and
the
same
thing
could
be
asked
about
more
modern
day
examples
where
the
media
industry
has
published
harmful
narratives.
How
do
they
reconcile
once
that
is
put
out
there
once
those
narratives
are
published,
it's
very
very,
very
hard
to
correct
them,
and
we
know
that
this
is
true
even
outside
of
issues
of
race.

These
are
all
very
basic
questions:
right,
common
sense
questions,
but
in
the
process
of
consuming
media
media,
consumers
are
typically
or
traditionally
have
not
been
trained
to
ask
themselves
these
questions
when
they're
reading
articles,
when
they're,
watching
the
news
or
when
they're
listening
to
the
news,
but
the
truth
is
consumers
play
a
role
in
this
as
well
and
in
order
for
us
to
evolve
as
a
society,
consumers
of
news
need
to
start
taking
on
the
responsibility
of
asking
themselves.
These
three
questions
is
it
a
fact
who
is
the
source?

The
same
thing
is
true
for
news
outlets
at
large.
Who
owns
this
news?
Outlet,
what
political
campaigns
are
they
funding?
Do
they
own
other
businesses?
Do
they
own
products
or
services
that
they're
selling
elsewhere?
Am
I
reading
a
fact-based
article
or
watching
a
fact-based
report,
or
is
this
marketing?
These
are
very
critical
questions
that
in
today's
climate,
especially
as
people
are
getting
more
of
their
information
online,
where
regulations
are,
are
a
lot
more
loose.
You
have
to
ask
yourself
these
questions
as
a
consumer
of
media.

Can
we
not
be
empowered
by
reaching
out
to
people
experts
in
our
own
network
to
just
simply
pick
up
the
phone
and
have
a
conversation
about
something
that
is
happening
and
get
their
perspective?
That
way
when
we
enter
into
water
cooler,
conversations
at
work
or
sidebars
at
church?
We
have
a
a
broader
perspective
on
ish
on
issues
that
are
relevant,
that
are
being
talked
about
in
casual
conversations,
but
that
are
informed
by
truth
and
facts
and
people
who
are
representative
of
the
communities
that
we
live
in,
and
so
we
we
do
think
about
this.

I
I've
seen
so
much
reporting
on
covid
and
oftentimes,
it's
a
white
doctor
or
a
white
scientist,
but
there
are
asian
doctors
and
scientists,
somali
doctors
and
scientists,
black
doctors
and
scientists
who
are
also
working
on
this
issue,
but
most
of
the
time
we
do
not
hear
from
them
to
root
this
in.
In
some
statistics.
For
you
all,
not
a
lot
of
news
organizations
do
this,
but
recently
national
public
radio
npr
did
a
study
where
they
investigated
themselves
and
what
they
uncovered
was
that
80
percent
of
people
who
they
sourced
in
their
stories.
A
And
so
not
only
are
people
of
color
left
out
of
a
lot
of
these
conversations,
but
in
time
so
are
women.
And
so
we
must
move
to
action,
and
you
know
the
question
that
that
we
can
ask
ourselves
is
when
we
do
start
reaching
out
in
our
networks,
and
we
do
start
to
realize
that
we
have
some
power
in
changing
these
narratives.

have
a
huge
audience,
they
have
a
huge
reach
and
the
only
way
to
truly
change.
The
narrative
is
to
have
just
as
many
people
who
are
are
starting
to
to
counter
some
of
the
things
some
of
the
standards
and
the
processes
that
have
led
us
to
where
we
are
today,
with
the
inequities
that
we
have
today,
and
so
yes,
you
can,
you
can
create
your
narrative.

are
telling
me
my

gone,
and
so
I'm
simultaneously
working
on
that,
while
I'm

but
at
this

know
I

stories

other
sources
like
victims,
families.
What
are
the
main
ways
that
you
are
able
to
connect
with
these
sources
and
how
can
we,
as
public
employees,.

relationships

up

things

happening
and
not
just
when
bad
things
are
happening.

there's
so
many
great
things
that
occur
in
the
city
of
minneapolis
that
should
be
amplified,

many
things

diverse
communities

yourself
to
someone.

honestly

missing
february

few
years
ago
and
I
would
say
this
is
like
one
of
top
three
hardest
stories.
I've
had
to
do
on
my
career
and
I've
done
a
lot
of
horrific
stories
triple
murders,
parents
who
have
killed
their
children,
but
there
was
something
about
kaya
taylor
that
that
that
broke
my
heart
in
in
a
different
way
and
most
likely,
because
I'm
a
mother
of
three
black
daughters
and
because
kya
taylor
looks
like
me,
but
you
don't
know
her
name.

So
I
went
to
columbus
georgia
to
cover
a
story
about
a
man
who
was
killed
by
police
and
just
so
happened
to
bump
into
kaya
taylor's
sister,
and
so
she
tells
me
that
her
sister's
missing
and
you
know
we
did

short
interview
and,
as
I
was
preparing
to
publish
the
interview,
I
I
had
to
do
a
lot
of
research
to
find
out
what
like
what
happened
to
kyah
and
to
verify
some
of
the
facts.

sister
told
me
and
to
see
if
the
police
department
that
investigated
this
case
would
talk
to
me.

there's

area
that
is
very
dear

where
there
is
so
much
room
for
improvement

telling
those
stories.

live

solutions

identified

problems

going
to
require
some

very
complex
and
dynamic

depth

the
organization

spokespeople

tv

elected
officials
that
nothing
really
happens
from
a
city
level
without

how
do
we
center

voices

where
I
feel
like
as
a
journalist-
gets
tricky
that
also
still
complies
with
the
protocols
of
your
communications
department,
because
anytime

reach

foundation

communities

suffering

disenfranchisements

understand

struggle
is
like
in
the
first
gulf
war,
iraq
and
afghanistan,
because
now
I
have
served
as
well,
but
it's
through
my
service
that
I
can
continue
on
with
the
transformation
that
they
started
and
for
which
they
could
not
benefit,
sometimes
specifically
talking
about
the

home
loan.

history

go

now
they've
created,
wait
through
their
resiliency
and
unwillingness
to
give
up,
have
created
the
ability
for
me

prosper
and
to
continue
to
make
transformation

hennepin
county
I
want

be
reflective
of

responsive
to
the
community.

was
how
impactful
having
stories
right
in
the
city.

work
a
lot
with
like
the
numbers
and
you
you're
aware
of

disparities

have

minneapolis
surrounding
homeownership
and
the
wealth
gap
and
the
education
gap
and
the
health
gap,
and
it's
terrible
right
but
start
to
put
some
stories
to
those
numbers.

whatever
work
you're
doing.

I've
learned
in
my
career
is
that
the
power
of
stories
can
move
people
to
action,
can
move
people
to
change
and
we
even
see
it
on
the
campaign
trail.

many
times
you
hear
a
politician
get
up
there
and
they
start
talking
about
joe
from
a
specific
city
who
had
a
problem
and
how
policy
is
going
to
change
that
problem
right,
and
so
you
use
the
story,
and
so
I
want
to
encourage
you
to
to
think
about
how
you,
through
building
relationships
in
community,
getting
to
know
people
learning
the
stories
of
the
people
who
are
lit.
Having
the
lived
experience
that
your
work
is
connected
to,
how
you
being
able
to
capture
their
story
and
share
their
story,
can
help
drive.

You
know
the
the
thing
I
want
to
leave
people
with.
I
really
encourage
you
to
check
out
print
and
hate.
I
know
I've
said
that
a
lot
but
take
care
of
yourself
be
kind
to
yourself,
the
intersection
of
being
in
a
black
body
and
and
to
that
question
that
was
asked
earlier
about
you
know,
being
black
and
working
for
an
entity
that
you
you
feel
like
has
caused
harm.
That
is
a
difficult
and
complex
intersection
to
live
in
and
so
be
mindful
of
that
feel
what
you
feel
connect
with
community.

And
so
I
just
I
want
to
leave
people
with
a
charge
to
do
something
kind
for
yourself
today
and
if
you
don't
got
time
or
money
find
find
something
relaxing
that
you
can
do
that's
free
over
the
weekend,
even
if
it's
just
resting
and
taking
a
moment
to
be
still
to
process
what
you're
going
through
or
to
write
it
out.
It's
so
important
that
we
preserve
ourselves
and
that
we
we
continuously
show
up
every
day,
holistically
and
and
whole
and
and
that
we
heal
from
our
hurts.

So
if
there's
anything
I
know,
that's
not
directly
cr
connected
to
narrative,
but
you
you
can't
pursue
narrative
justice
or
systems
change
or
you
can't.
You
can't
accomplish
nothing
if
you
don't
take
care
of
yourself,
so
I
think
that
seems
most
fitting
in
light
of
our
current
climate
here
in
the
city
of
minneapolis,.
