Great hi, thank you Michael, my name is Erica and I am a neighborhood support specialist with the neighborhood and community relations department for the City of Minneapolis and I'm. Also one of the co uh coordinators for the community connections conference this year um at NCR. We connect the community with the city and the city with the community and at our conference this year, we're also going to be partnering with the Minneapolis green zones to host the green zone. Summit.

And I work for the sustainability division in the Minneapolis Health Department I'm, the north side green zone Vista there and I'm helping to plan this year's green zone Summit for environmental justice.

For both Erica and Megan um help us understand our listeners understand who this is their first time. Listening to you, um what is the Community Collections conference? What does that do and what the green zone Summit? Can you tell us what they are so that we have a better understanding what it is.

um Community connections.

Absolutely the community connections conference is an annual event hosted by our department, the neighborhood and community relations department from the City of Minneapolis. This is actually our 10th year. So we're pretty proud of that. The community connections conference brings together residents of Minneapolis with Community groups, neighborhoods and local government.

And the green zone, Summit is hosted by the north side and the South Side green zone and it's in partnership with the community connections conference and it raises awareness and builds power for environmental justice.

Megan and Erica, why is the city holding a conference in a Summit um help us understand why Minneapolis.

So one of the biggest reasons we are hosting this conference is to really bring together community members and local government and also community-based organizations. So community members, City departments and decision makers can connect um to build relationships. We also want residents to learn about prog programs and policies that affect them and so that all communities can feel welcome and get involved in local decision making this year. Our theme is Minneapolis in motion and the theme really welcomes all communities to explore the ways Minneapolis is growing and moving and changing.

And for the green zone Summit, the purpose of the green zone Summit is to increase awareness for the Minneapolis green zones initiative and for those who don't know, Green zones are neighborhoods in Minneapolis that experience cumulative environmental pollution as well as social, political and economic marginalization, and so the green zone initiative is to really work with these residents and help them achieve environmental justice by energizing the economy using environmentally conscious efforts, and so the Summit is to really bring awareness to the green zones.

But it's also going to be a time for building relationships for neighbors and organizations to connect, as well as learn about the environmental justice work going on in Minneapolis and how they can get involved as well.

Erica, what can you tell us about? What can you tell our listener um about this year's conference.

Well, this year's conference is on Saturday June 10th from 9 A.M to 3 P.M in Hall, a which is on the lower level of the Minneapolis Convention Center in downtown Minneapolis um check-in and in-person registration starts at 8 A.M, where we'll have some light: refreshments and some coffee and so we'd love to see you early.

um The events again starts at 9am, where we're gonna have an opening ceremony. It's a free con conference and there's lots of things to do for the whole community and the whole family.

Erica for folks who, who plans to go to the conference this year, um what what can they expect to see and do at the conference yeah.

So there's going to be lots of great stuff for everyone, there's going to be workshops and other breakout sessions in multiple language on subjects including renters rights, uh responsible development and worker well-being, creative expression and emotional release with the community-based organization free writers, um there's gonna, be information about building relationships with youth in challenging environments and environmental justice topics.

There's going to be opportunities to learn about City policies, programs and, most importantly, services there'll, be a free, delicious lunch from local food member vendors and we're also going to have several performances by local artists from different communities.

We're going to have activities for kids and also an exhibit space with more than 100 organizations, and this includes booths from City departments, neighborhood organizations, Community organizations, non-profits and other governmental agencies.

And making the same question to you, what kind of things can people who are coming planning to participate in the green zone Summit? What kind of things do they you know? Can they expect to see and and participate in at the con at the green zone? Summit I told them it's.

So the green zone Summit this year, will have programming, including workshops on Recycling and Organics, creating a home energy plan to save energy and money, as well as Community uh conversations about climate action and this year. Our featured session is about the Minneapolis climate Equity plan, where residents can learn what the city is planning on doing, to create an equitable and resilient future. And if you want to attend the conference and the summit, you can register for the community connections conference.

Erica I'm excited about this conference and this uh and Megan well the summit. That's coming up Erica. You said that the conference is free, but should folks still register um it's free that there's it's going to be free food, but should folks still register Hotel conferences.

I'm excited too Michael, um it is free. um We would love you to pre-register. um You can register by visiting Minneapolis mn.gov CCC and um once you get there, click register. You can also register by visiting the city's Facebook page and find events.

um Add events go to the community connections conference, Facebook event, page in Hmong or English, and the link is posted where it says tickets register in person the day of at the conference in any of five languages. So you don't need to pre-register. You can register day of and if you're interested in volunteering for the conference, you can also sign up to volunteer while you're filling out your registration form.

Erica I'm excited as well I mean again I'm super excited. I can't wait. um What kind of things can't folks volunteer to do for the conference this year, I'm a quote on the volunteer, and um you know the numbers of people who would just say: hey I, want to participate young people and so forth. What kind of things can people volunteer to do for the conference.

There are several options and several different shifts. um The shifts for each volunteer uh role is one hour and 45 minutes long, which gives volunteers plenty of options to also enjoy the conference. The volunteer roles include volunteer leader, registration, greeters team, lead assistants and lunch assistants, and, if you're interested in volunteering aside from figuring it out or signing up at registration, you can contact Michael yang.
