Good afternoon, michael, thank you for having me. My name is monique fish, and I am the public works workforce coordinator here to tell you guys about opportunities with public works.

My understanding is that there are several positions: opening at public works that individuals outside of the system, individual outside the city or inside the city could apply, and these are really good paying jobs from the city of minneapolis. Am I correct.

That's correct: we have lots of opportunities in minneapolis public works that are open for application now through january 16th that include on-the-job paid training.

um This is an annual opportunity um because we've had a lot of retirements and people promoting recently.

Yeah great question: public works is the largest department in the city of minneapolis. We employ more than a thousand people in nine divisions, so we take care of everything from your drinking water to streets and paving garbage collection, traffic signs and signals in our surface water. We're hiring for all these things. The divisions that are hiring are solid waste and recycling, transportation, maintenance and repair traffic and parking services, water treatment and distribution, as well as surface water and sewer. All of these divisions have multiple vacancies and are open for application. Now.

Recycling uh transportation, maintenance, there, repair, uh gay traffic parking services.

Qualifications deter members of our community from applying, because we don't have a lot of the skills that city departments looks for. What kind of experience is public works? Looking for in an applicant.

Yes, we are looking for people at all levels, so, with little experience um to a lot of experience, the most important thing is a good attitude in the ability to learn and work well with others. We can train you on everything that you would.

Yes, there are several opportunities available at public works and I'm going to tell you about five of them. The first one is our public works service worker one trainee position. This is a 12 month. Trainee position that helps people employed with the city, get the training and experience they need to be successful in these careers.

They'll learn how to perform maintenance activities, learn to drive cdl vehicles and operate equipment, and the nice part about these training positions is that we're going to help support the trainees by helping them get their cdl license during the first six months and also teach them how to be successful as well as getting uh learning how to plow snow and how to safely operate equipment?

B

So that is our first position. That's our trainee position. um If you have more experience, then you can come in as a public works service worker one. These are all construction-like positions for the city of minneapolis, and this position you have one year of experience, performing maintenance activity and driving cdl vehicles and operating equipment and doing construction-like services. And that again, is our public works service worker. One position: if you have even more experience, then you could apply for a public works service worker too.

That is doing all the same things, including operating uh heavy equipment.

B

So if you've done heavy equipment operation and have your cdl class a or b, this is a good opportunity for you, and then we also have some positions that don't require a cdl license. There is a water distribution operator trainee, which is very similar to the other position.

It is a 12 to 18, month, trainee program that is similar again to the other training position that I mentioned, except for you would be focused on the city's water infrastructure systems opposed to a commercial driver's license, but they are also performing um maintenance activities and labor activities um just focused on the water distribution systems.

If you have experience with that, you don't have to go through the trainee program. If you have one year of experience, you can come in and do that work um focusing on water main pipes, and uh this is city's water distribution systems, and those are the five titles that we're focused on today.

Who are public works service workers.

These are these job working outside in not outdoor night versus.

B

Yes, if you like to work outside on a job that has a lot of variety, this is for you. These positions have mostly outdoor working environments um and all weather elements. um So since we are taking care of the city of minneapolis, most of our work sites are in the city of minneapolis or just outside the city limits and are also on public transit lines. So if you travel that way, it's a plus as well.

Some of the position, some of these um some of the open positions, are training jobs. How do training programs work? The opposition lawyers totally watching your ps4 programs.

Yes, I'm really excited about these trainee positions. They are 12 to 18 months and these are for applicants who are hired into minneapolis. Public works, we're going to provide the training and resources and equipment to get them to either a public works service worker one or a water distribution operator position.

So once you complete the trainee programs you're going to automatically be promoted to the next level, you don't have to reapply for the next step. It's just going to automatically happen. So that's a nice bonus that you don't have to do additional steps.

Yes- and we are hoping that you apply for these positions and you start your application soon, we started, uh we opened applications on december 6 and they are closing on. The deadline is sunday january 16th, so that is coming really soon and you want to get your application started.

You want to complete the information as clearly as possible, and we ask that you start early in case. You have questions. There are folks like myself who can answer those questions and help you through the process so um start your applications. Now.

The next step is to um your our hr team will review the applications and then we will invite everyone who has a complete application to our physical agility test. The last week in january, there is a video of the applica of the physical agility test um on our website, so you can know exactly what to expect.

This is a physical component and everyone who successfully completes the physical agility test will be added to our hiring list in uh early february, we'll start our interviews and then we will um invite people to start the onboarding process um in uh working with public works. The last week in march so february, interviews or excuse me janu, the last the last week in january, our physical agility test february interviews, um starting the last week in march.

We talked about uh online application, do you accept paper applications and what else do listeners need to know about the application and where can they find out more about these positions?.

So the city of minneapolis does not accept paper applications all um applications for any city. Jobs are only on the website, so you're going to want to go to minneapolis, mn, dot, gov jobs, to fill out your application, and if you need any support or help, you can call 311 and our agents will help. You find the information in any language. So if you are interested in the video for the physical agility test or any information that we've shared here today about the individual jobs, you can find that information at our public works.

Page on the city of minneapolis website, what people need to know about these jobs is that we're open for application now through january 16th, start the process as soon as possible.

That way, if you have any questions myself, our hr team can help you with those questions um and get you the answers that you need to complete your application.

If you could read the posting first, that's always going to be helpful in any position that you're applying for whether it's with the city of minneapolis or other people and then add your relevant experience to uh your application.

If you are including a resume, um that is great, it's not required, but just make sure you put all of the information. That's in your resume in the application itself do not put c resume, because you want to make sure that everything is complete in the application where hiring managers can see that detail.

Another good thing to remember is that all applications are reviewed by real live people. um So it's not a computer program. That's just gonna pick random people um based upon an algorithm. This is going to be viewed by real people, so make sure your information is clear and ask any questions if you have them before, you can save your application as many times as you need to, but you can only submit once if you have additional questions.
