A
Every
year,
the
city
of
Minneapolis
creates
a
budget
that
represents
our
needs
and
values
as
a
community.
The
budget
funds
things
like
roadways,
water,
Public,
Safety
and
other
essential
services
for
the
following
year.
So
how
does
the
budget
process
work?
Let's
take
a
look
ideas
about
the
budget
come
from,
anyone
in
the
community
residents,
businesses,
neighborhoods
city
departments
and
others.
Taking
all
this
feedback
into
consideration,
the
mayor
recommends
a
budget.
A
The
first
stop
for
the
recommended
budget
is
the
board
of
estimate
and
Taxation,
which
sets
the
maximum
property
tax.
The
board
holds
a
public
hearing
where
you
can
give
feedback
about
the
proposed
levy.
The
next
stop
is
the
City
Council
staff,
briefs
the
council
and
the
impact
of
the
recommended
budget.
These
presentations
are
televised
and
open
to
the
public.
During
this
process,
the
council
can
make
changes
to
the
recommended
budget
based
on
feedback
from
you.
In
addition
to
public
hearings,
the
city
has
provided
another
opportunity
to
give
input
through
an
online
comment
form
by
late.
A
November
residents
will
receive
their
property
tax
estimate
for
the
following
year
for
all
local
governments,
including
the
county
and
schools.
After
those
estimates
are
sent,
the
city
holds
one
more
public
hearing.
This
is
called
the
truth
and
taxation
hearing.
This
hearing
is
only
for
the
city's
portion
of
your
property
taxes.
A
At
the
end
of
the
year,
the
City
Council
votes
to
adopt
the
budget
which
will
fund
the
city
for
the
coming
year.
So
where
does
the
money
come
from?
Well,
it
comes
from
a
number
of
sources.
You
might
be
surprised
that
only
25%
of
the
city's
budget
comes
from
property
taxes.
That
means
the
biggest
part
of
the
budget
about
75%
comes
from
other
sources
like
fees,
fines
permits
and
federal
and
state
aid.
So
how
is
the
money
distributed?
A
Approximately
24%
of
the
budget
goes
to
the
Public
Works
Department,
making
sure
that
all
residents
have
access
to
clean
water
and
safe
roads
about
23%
goes
to
capital
improvement
projects.
These
include
long-term
investments
like
parks
and
public
buildings,
Public
Safety,
including
police
fire
and
emergency
management,
get
about
15%.
The
park
board
gets
approximately
8%.
The
convention
center
gets
4%,
health,
licensing
planning
and
economic
development
get
approximately
8%,
and
the
remaining
18%
is
split
between
all
other
city
departments.
A
So
that's
it.
That's
how
the
city
is
funded
and
don't
forget
that
you
are
an
important
part
of
that
process.
You
can
attend
public
hearings,
contact
your
elected
officials
or
submit
your
comments
online.
So
we
can
hear
what's
important
to
you.
We
welcome
your
feedback,
because
everyone's
participation
makes
Minneapolis
better
for
all
Oh.
