Through
hard
times
and
poverty,
etcheson
dreams
of
becoming
a
policeman
and
as
he
comes
into
his
teens
michael
etchison's,
life
takes
a
turn
for
the
better
at
carver
high
etcheson
does
custodial
work
before
classes
and
devotes
himself
to
his
studies.
He
finds
time
to
play
lineman
for
the
carver
wildcats,
though
not
a
starter.
Etcherson
is
proud
to
do
his
part
for
the
team.

A
K
Micah
was
very
proud
to
become
a
police
officer.
You
know
that
was
his
childhood
dream
and
we
were
very
proud.
O
He
was
always
very
laid
back,
no
matter
how
stressful
the
situation
was.
I
always
seem
to
handle
things
in
stride,
but
most
of
the
things
that
I
remember
is
how
well
he
treated
people
he
dealt
with
a
lot
of
difficult
situations.
Dealing
with
criminals
is
not
easy,
but
he
always
seemed
to
treat
them
as
human
beings.
N
His
father
was
john
atchison
and
god
rest
his
soul.
He
drank
too
much
and
he
would
he
would
get
some
fights.
K
And
they
got
a
call
at
joel,
walton
home
that
mr
jack
was
cutting
up
and
you
know
they
said.
Let's
get
this
to
michael,
they
were
labs.
Michael
went
there.
He
told
us
and
said
his
dad
saw
him
coming
and
he
said
that
my
boy
right
there
that's
what
he
said
and
he
said
hey
dad
said
I
heard
you
been,
you
know,
cutting
up
said
daddy.
I
want
you
to
come,
go
with
me
and
say
he
put
his
arm
around
micah
shoulders.
You
know
and
said
I'll
go
with
you
yeah.
K
I
go
with
you.
I
won't
go
with
nobody
else,
but
I
go
with
you
and
mike
said,
come
on
daddy.
I
have
to
you,
know,
handcuff
you
and
put
you
in
the
back
seat
and
he
said
he
was
just
telling
everybody.
This
is
my
son
right
here
this,
my
boy,
you
know
very
proud,
but
micah
had
didn't,
have
any
incident
with
his
father
and
it
he
arrested
him.
P
And
at
that
time
there
were
still
some
people
in
this
area
that
didn't
believe
that
a
black
officer
should
stop
a
white
person
which
was
wrong,
of
course,
but
there
were
people
that
felt
that
way
and
they
disliked
it.
There
were
also
some
blacks
in
in
this
town
in
this
area.
You
know
that
believe
that,
because
he
was
that
he
should
make
exception
for
them
or
treat
them
differently,
and
he
didn't
do
that.
You
know
he
treated
everybody
pretty
much
the
same.
K
Once
he
came
to
mama
and
told
her
that
he
was
having
trouble
being
an
officer,
he
didn't
understand
why
he
couldn't
arrest
white
people
like
he
could
to
black
people,
and
she
was
telling
him
about.
Things
were
going
to
change
and
they
were
going
to
pray
for
change.
Q
Q
A
few
weeks
later,
mike
was
assigned
to
mark
meters
or
mark
tires
up
here
on
parking
detail,
and
you
know,
of
course
a
lot
of
officers
were
thinking.
You
know
he
ain't
gonna,
he's
not
gonna
put
up
with
this
he's
gonna
quit
or
something
he
didn't
he
he
came
in
every
morning
when
he
was
supposed
to.
He
went
up
the
street.
He
did
his
job.

When
jimmy
met
kay,
he
changed,
he
became
black
normal
and
he
was
for
a
while.
Yes,
he
was-
and
I
thought
this
is
very
good
virginia.
R
R
A
O
N
I
waved
the
traffic
out
of
this
out
into
the
street.
He
pulled
out
real
slow,
very,
very
slow
got
even
with
me
and
turned
and
looked
at
me
and
just
smiled
and
then
floored
it
and
I
hauled
it
at
tommy
and
told
him.
I
said
tommy
call
in
I
said:
that's
the
guy
they're.
Looking
for
that's
that's
the
lookout.
Q
Q
A
Q
Q
And
league
slowed
down
at
this
point
like
he
was
going
to
stop
and
as
bill
stepped
out
from
behind
the
car
door
and
approached
him,
he
raised
a
pistol
up
and
shot
bill
point
blanks
in
the
chest.
Thing
tried
to
shoot,
but
he
had
nothing
there
to
shoot.
So
he
racked
another
one
in
the
shotgun
and
he
fired
another
round.
Q
Q
Q
Q
I
don't
want
to
be
in
like
this,
not
on
the
highway,
and
I
thought
about
my
wife
and
I
had
a
son
about
14
and
a
half
months
old
at
that
time
and
he
settled
in
finally
settled
down
in
a
phone
position
across
the
road
from
me
at
the
front
of
the
car
and
he
and
I
traded
shots
there.
I'd
shoot
and
then
I'd
go
down.
He'd
shoot,
I'd,
ease
back
up
and
shoot
he'd
go
back
down
the
next
shot.
I
took.
Q
I
come
up
into
the
door
jam
across
the
hood
and
I
cocked
the
hammer
back
and
I
took
that
shot
and
dropped
back
down
and
I
raised
up
again
and
looked
again
and
he
didn't
move.
So
at
that
time
I
crawled
back
to
the
car
crawled
up
in
the
seat
to
get
the
microphone
because
it
fell
down
on
mike's
side
of
the
car.
Q
And
I
remember
seeing
mike
laying
there,
but
I
also
remember
his
shirt,
just
kind
of
fluttering
and
I
thought
well
he's
just
unconscious.
I
called
in
I
told
him
I
said:
mike's
shot,
I'm
shot
we're
both
down.
We
need
some
help,
we
need
an
ambulance
and
we
need
some
help.
Quick.
O
R
L
My
mother
came
to
the
job
to
get
me
and
I
was
wondering
why
she
came
so.
She
said
it
had
been
an
accident.
She
didn't
tell
me
what
cause
she
was
cool.
She
could
take.
A
lot
said.
Mom
could
take
a
lot,
so
she
was
cool,
she
said
it's
been
an
accident
and
michael
was
in
it
and
she
was
driving.
She
wasn't
driving
records
or
anything.

A
The
carnage
might
have
been
even
more
heartbreaking,
but
these
are
of
little
comfort
now
to
robbie
etcheson
and
her
young
son,
who
must
face
the
days
and
years
ahead
without
michael
for
robbie.
The
flurry
of
visitors
and
events
over
the
next
days
are
a
blur
condolences
pour
in
from
around
the
state
and
across
the
nation,
and
the
day
of
the
funeral
arrives.

There
have
been
other
honors
accorded

grateful
community
each
year
since
2001,
a
scholarship
is
awarded
by
the
monroe
police

in

Honor.
Equally
important
is
the

award
of
valor
given
to
a
deserving
officer
for
outstanding
heroism
and
the
georgia.
Fraternal
