From YouTube: Oklahoma City ArtScapes - "Compass Rose"
Description
Artist Owen Morrel talks about his sculpture "Compass Rose," an artistic representation of the device used for centuries as a navigational tool.
The 25-foot-tall steel and aluminum sphere is located in the Boathouse District at SE 6th and Lincoln along the Oklahoma River.
A
A
Rounded.
The
mirrors
have
helped
me
tremendously,
very
literally
they.
You
know
it's
illusion.
It's
a
loser
II,
but
if
they
were
there,
including
the
surrounding
into
the
piece,
my
dad
actually
parked
his
boat
out
in
Montauk
Point
and
there
were
docks.
You
know
we
hung
out
on
the
docks
and
I
spent.
My
summers
out
there
as
a
kid
and
lived
on
the
boat
and
I
had
did
odd
jobs
and
I
spent
time
in
the
afternoon.
So
I
wasn't
working
I
was
do
sketches
on
the
docks
of
the
fishing
boats.
A
I
fell
in
love
with
the
rigging
of
the
of
the
longline
trawlers
and
the
net
boats
and
the
commercial
fishing
boats
I.
Just
I
thought
they
were
just
exquisite
and
and
I
actually
took
pictures
of
the
you
know
the
mass
and
the
riggings,
and
so
I
would
say
edit
and
all
those
forms
became
seminal.
You
know
material
for
my
early
work
and
the
concept
of
the
sea
got
me
very
interested
in
primitive
navigational
tools
through
my
attraction
to
the
fishing
boats
and
to
the
primitive
navigational
instruments.
