Description
Oklahoma City Ward 6 Councilwoman Meg Salyer learns about the historic past and the present day operations of the Oklahoma National Stockyards Company, "The World's Largest Cattle Market."
A
Hello,
I'm,
Meg,
Saylor
and
I
represent
Ward
6
for
the
city
of
Oklahoma
City.
We
have
a
fantastic
opportunity
today
to
meet
my
friend
Kelly
Payne,
who
is
the
yard
liaison
I?
Think
it's
a
great
title.
I
may
try
to
steal
that
for
the
Oklahoma
City
National,
Stock,
Yards
and
Kelly's
going
to
share
with
us
some
great
history
about
the
stockyards
to
me,
it's
a
real
hidden
gem
in
Oklahoma
City
and
most
people
don't
know
much
about
it.
A
B
Don't
well
and
thank
you
so
much
for
having
me
on
it's.
The
stockyards
is
very
important
to
me:
I've
been
on
and
off
the
yard,
since
I
was
five
years
old,
so
grew
up
on
the
brick.
So
it's
very
dear
to
my
heart,
the
story
of
the
stockyards,
our
city,
fathers
in
1910.
You
know
we
were
very
young
State,
had
a
vision
and.
B
And
they
were
looking
at
what
Oklahoma
City
had
to
offer
for
other
industry
and
they
had
seen
the
packing
houses
had
a
huge
stake
in
Chicago
and
st.
Louis
and
Omaha
Nebraska.
So
they
sent
letters
out
inviting
these
packing
companies
to
come
down.
We
had
an
ample
workforce,
plenty
of
wide-open
space
and
they
they
took
interest
and
when
they
came
down,
the
story
is
that
they
had.
It
took
them
two
days
to
get
from
downtown
to
where
the
stockyards
is
now
the
raging
river
and
San
Birds
and
Sam,
plum
thickets
and
just
a
mess
Chris.
A
B
Love
it
when
they
fall
in
love
with
it
once
we
can
get
them
here,
we
can
kind
of
trap
them,
so
it
works
out
well
and
the
packing
companies
they
had.
They
knew
what
they
could
bring
to
Oklahoma
City,
but
they
wanted
some
things
from
Oklahoma
City
as
well
and
so
much
like
today
and
I
know.
Everyone
has
worked
really
hard
to
get
industry
to
come
into
Oklahoma
City.
They
offered
the
city
had
to
offer
some
incentives,
so
cuz
I
played
so
hard
ball
here.
The.
A
B
B
B
It's
been
great
we're
entering
our
108
year
and
the
stockyards
itself
is
still
just
as
viable
to
to
our
industry.
Today
as
it
was,
then
we
we
don't
have
the
packing
houses
anymore,
just
because
our
industry
changed,
but
what
we,
what
we
got
from,
that
is
the
whole
business
district
that
sprung
up
virtually
overnight,
to
offer
services
to
the
to
the
gentle
men
and
women
that
worked
there,
whether
it
was
restaurants
or
libations
or
but
we
had
a
post
office,
a
fire
station.
Everything
that
they
needed
was
there
rail
car
was
there.
B
A
A
We've,
you
know
now
got
McClintock
across
the
street,
we're
seeing
an
explosion
of
opportunities,
but
some
of
those
you
know
I,
think
many
of
those
traditional
purveyors
we've
got
the
saddlery
businesses
and
we've
got
food.
You
know
for
animals
and
we've
got
you
know
it's
a
very
authentic
place,
which.
B
B
It's
it's
it's
fun
for
me
to
think
about.
You
know
that
whole
area
is
brick
and
the
the
the
pens
itself
on
the
yards
is
seventy
acres
with
the
brick
bottom,
which
is
fascinating,
and
to
think
that
that
was
done.
You
know
so
many
years
ago
and
still
usable
to
this
day
we
average
around
400,000
head
of
cattle
that
go
through
there.
Every
year
we
have
sales
on
Monday
and
Tuesday,
but
we
have
a
great
partnership
with
the
district.
So.
B
Bet
you
bet,
we
have
a
separate
viewing
platform
and
you
go
across
the
the
historic
catwalk
which
the
place
is
you
looking
down
over
the
pins
of
cattle
and
when,
once
you
get
passed
over
the
catwalk,
you
can
go
right
into
the
Selborne
which
used
to
be
the
hay.
Barn.
We've
only
had
live
auctions
since
62
and
everything
was
traded
over
the
pins,
but
you
can
stand
and
watch
and
it's
a
lot
of
folks
are
confused
at
first
because
there's
a
lot
of
fast
talking
with
the
auctioneer,
but
a
lot
of
times.
B
Folks
are
very
happy
to
visit
with
visit
with
you
and
explain
what's
going
on,
so
we
kind
of
take
it
for
granted
that
this
is
our
weekly,
it's
our
job,
and
so
we
forget
the
tourist
draw
that
it
is
but
I
know.
Just
last
week
we
are
in
June
the
they
were
talking
about.
I
kept
I'll
have
folks
holler
at
me
and
say:
hey
there's
some.
You
know
some
visitors
or
international
guests.
We
had
17
different
countries
come
through
and
watch
the
sale
in
24
hours,
I.
B
A
B
Experience
well,
it's
that's
a
testament
to
what
Oklahoma
City
has
also
done
to
draw
tourism
in
for
the
whole
city
and
we're
blessed
to
have
such
unique
districts
and
with
stockyards
City
Main
Street
being
one
of
those
as
well
that
it's
marketed
very
well
but
I
feel
like
folks,
like
you
said
earlier,
it's
off
it's
a
step
back
into
in
maybe
into
the
past,
but
it's
also
something
that
isn't
seen
very
often
and
another
interesting
fact
about.
Stockyards
is
the
only
working
stockyards
left
of
that
size.
That's
directly
tied
to
a
business
district.
B
B
Yes
in
Fort
Worth
and
no
detriment
to
our
neighbors
to
the
south,
but
we
are
a
working
yard
that
you
know
week
in
and
week
out,
farmers
and
ranchers
are
bringing
in
cattle,
had
some
travel
riders
in
from
Chicago
that
have
actually
spent
most
of
their
life
in
Europe
a
few
months
ago,
and
they
stopped
literally
in
the
middle
of
the
street
and
I
thought.
Oh
my
Lance
something's
wrong
and
I
said
is
everything
okay
and
she
said
this
is
the
real
deal
she
said.
B
A
It's
just
so
much
fun
I
think
it's
really
an
exciting
opportunity,
and
so
we've
got
a
group
of
folks
that
have
been
really
interested
in
adding
to
that
experience
and
converting
our
little
park
right
down
along
the
river's
edge
into
a
horse
park
and
I
know
you've
been
involved
in
those
conversations.
Yes,.
B
B
Are
you
thinking
we're
blessed
to
have
the
partnerships
that
we
have
with
the
Main
Street
and
with
the
city
and
CVB,
but
with
the
with
the
advent
of
the
of
the
park,
one
of
the
things
that
we've
already
done
at
the
stockyards
that
folks
probably
didn't
know
about
is
if
livestock
is
being
transported
across
the
United
States.
But
you
know
it
with
us
being
America's
crossroads.
We
have
facilities
to
place
horses
or
cattle
for
feed,
water
and
rest
and
let
them
stretch
their
legs
and
you
know
get
off
the
trailer.
A
B
A
B
It's
unique
when
I
walk
across
that
catwalk
here,
almost
I
level
with
I-40
and
I
think
how
many
cars
are
just
going
by
and
have
no
idea
it's
right
here,
but
one
of
the
unique
things
about
the
stockyards
with
the
cells
that
run
late
into
the
night
or
early
morning.
I've
walked
across
that
catwalk
facing
the
Devon
Tower,
and
it's
such
a
beautiful,
beautiful
view
of
a
city
skyline
with
the
with
a
moon
right
above
it
and
I.
Think
wow
I
wish
everyone
could
experience
this
well.
A
B
A
B
It's
so
it's
a
testament
to
everything
that
everyone
has
worked
for
to
have,
that
is
a
new,
exciting
hub
and
to
add
value
for
the
existing
merchants
that
are
there
and
for
international
and
our
local
residents.
You
know
our
guests,
so
we
invite
everyone
to
come
down
and
enjoy
it
and
kind
of
take
a
walk
back
in
time
and
see
where
the
west
still
I.
