Description
Ward 6 City Councilwoman Meg Salyer discusses education with Gloria Torres, Capitol Hill Center Coordinator at OCCC.
A
Hello,
I'm,
Meg
Salyer
and
I'd
like
to
welcome
you
all
to
the
ward
6
council
show.
I
have
with
me
today
one
of
my
great
friends,
Gloria
Torres,
and
it's
going
to
be
hard
for
me
to
come
up
with
all
the
titles
Gloria
you're
the
coordinator
for
the
Capitol
Hill
campus
center
for
Oklahoma
City,
Community
College.
You
are
the
ward
6
appointee
to
the
community
action
agency,
which
I
thank
you.
So
much
for
your
service
to
that
and
I
I
know.
A
A
Much
good
well,
first
of
all,
share
with
us.
You
know
many
people.
When
you
talk
about
running
for
City
Council,
you
talk
about
running
for
school
board.
All
say
that
is
the
most
thankless
hardest
job
you
could
do,
but
I
think
in
all
our
minds.
It's
the
most
important,
a
school
board
in
particular.
Please
let
us
know
why
you
decided
to
throw
your
hat
in
the
ring
and
talk
a
little
bit
about
your
early
experiences.
Well,
absolutely.
B
You
know-
and
we
hear
that
a
lot
that
this
is
one
of
the
most
thankless
and
I-
have
to
tell
you
when
you
see
both
the
children
and
the
adults
every
day,
and
they
know
that
you're
there
working
for
them.
You
get
those
smiles,
you
get
those
things
and
and
really
walking
down
the
street
you.
There
are
a
lot
of
people
in
our
community
who
understand
the
service
that
we
provide
as
as
educators,
but
also
on
the
school
board.
So
it
is
for
me
personally.
B
It
is
an
absolute
honor
to
be
able
to
serve
in
that
capacity.
I
have
been
an
education
for
just
a
little
over
20
years,
I
started
as
an
educator
in
Oklahoma,
City,
Public,
Schools,
perfect
and
I've
done,
probably
every
job
that
there
is
to
do
in
Oklahoma,
City,
Public,
Schools
and
so
now
I
get
to
sit
up.
The
horseshoe,
which
is
a
on
the
school
board,.
A
B
A
From
different
backgrounds,
they
all
bring
a
different
level
of
experience,
but
I
think
the
thing
I
was
most
excited
about
when
I
knew
you
were
considering.
This
was
your
background
in
academia
and
in
the
Oklahoma
City
Public
Schools.
So
you
have
a
great
reference
for
ya.
You
know
the
successes
that
we've
had
the
challenges
that
are
in
front
of
us
and
some
of
the
things
that
can
be
done.
So
we.
A
Well,
it's
incredible
really!
Isn't
it
I've
been
in
Oklahoma
City
for
30
years
and
the
face
of
the
district
just
in
that
time
has
really
changed
and
you
know
we're
seeing
communities
in
South,
Oklahoma
City
that
are
exploding
in
population.
We're
seeing
you
know
some
of
the
schools
in
the
northern
part
of
the
city
are
shrinking
in
size,
but
correct
me
if
I'm
wrong,
but
I
think
this
year
we
have
the
largest
enrollment
that
we've
ever
had.
We
over
40
55.
A
B
Is
very
correct:
every
one
of
our
children
out
there
can
learn
a
very
correct
and
I
believe.
That's
something
that
the
entire
board
is
very
much
understanding
of
and
pushing
for
for
us
to
understand
that
we
may
have
some
challenges
as
a
district.
That
does
not
mean
that
we
are
limited
at
the
level
of
excellence
that
we
can
provide
our
our
students,
their
level
of
education
solutely.
B
Our
students
can
achieve
so
much
more
than
anyone
can
then
sometimes
people
give
us
credit
for
we
don't
hear
about
all
of
the
excellent
things
going
on
in
our
district
and
there's
many
things.
This
last
board
meeting
I
was
able
to
share
some
of
the
excellent
opportunities
that
our
students
have
within
our
buildings.
I
got
to
visit
a
high
school
middle
school
and
an
elementary
school
and
sure
we
have
challenges
across
the
board,
but
we
had
reason
to
celebrate
in
every
one
of
those
schools,
and
so
we
were
able
to
share
some
of
that.
Isn't.
B
They're
just
smiling
they're
happy,
they
are
and
that's
where
the
the
weight
comes
on
us
as
they
both
the
educators,
the
adults
in
the
district
and
as
board
members.
That
weight
comes
on
us
to
provide
them
the
quality
programming
that
they
need,
the
quality
education
that
they
need
and
for
us
not
to
be
stuck
on
doing
things.
The
way
we've
always
done
them
just
because
that's
the
way
we've
always
done
it,
but
rather
go
out
and
see
what
it
is
that
we
need
to
be
doing
to
serve
the
different
needs
of
our
students.
B
We
have
students
who
my
daughter
graduated
from
Capitol
Hill,
High
School
at
age,
16
with
45
college
hours.
Well,
that
was
all
provided
through
Oklahoma
City,
Public
Schools,
all
free
tuition
to
me,
his
mom,
and
so
that's
a
level
of
excellence
that
we
do
provide
with
an
Oklahoma
City
Public
Schools
that
maybe
not
available
in
many
other
school
districts.
We.
A
B
Oklahoma
City
Community
College
is
South.
Oklahoma
City
is
a
it's
a.
It
was
built
through
a
self
tax
in
South
Oklahoma
City,
because
we
wanted
to
make
sure
that
we
had
an
educational
institution,
and
so
the
focus
of
South
Oklahoma
City
of
Oklahoma
City
Community
College,
is
to
provide
that
higher
education
level
to
South
Oklahoma
City,
with
that
every
Oklahoma
City
public
school
student
who
lives
in
South
Oklahoma
City,
is
therefore
entitled
to
receive
the
OKC
grant.
Okc
go
grant
yeah,
which
pays
for
tuition
I
mean.
A
B
It
is,
it
is
an
outstanding
education,
now
standing
an
institution
I,
as
you
mentioned,
I
am
the
coordinator
over
the
Capitol
Hill
Center,
which
is
an
outreach
of
Oklahoma
City
Community
College
within
the
south
oklahoma
city
community,
and
our
primary
focus
is
to
reach
maybe
the
parents
of
many
of
the
Oklahoma
City
public
school
students
by
providing
them
the
opportunity
to
gain
educational
experiences
through
ESL
English
as
a
Second,
Language
and
GED
programming.
We
offer
GED
instruction,
both
in
english
and
in
spanish,
so.
A
Is
now
Hispanic
so
language
and
english
as
a
second
language
is
really
important,
not
a
barrier,
but
it's
an
incredibly
important
element.
We
need
to
realize
when
we
I've
been
a
tutor
for
a
couple
of
years
at
herring,
Ville
and
all
three
of
my
students
have
had
spanish
as
their
first
language
and
I
think
you
know
at
home,
their
parents
speak
Spanish,
and
so
breaking
that
complication
of
learning
to
read
in
English,
you
know
has
been
hard
and
I
think
we
all
know
those
same
statistics
were
very
focused
on
early
childhood,
education
and
I.
B
B
You
know,
but
along
with
language,
comes
culture,
and
we
have
a
very
diverse
community
within
South
Oklahoma
City.
We
have
a
native
English
speakers
that
have
a
different
culture
than
what
we
might
experience
in
other
areas
of
the
city,
and
so
there's
a
now.
We
add
that
the
language
component
as
well,
we
on
Oklahoma,
City
public
school,
serves
a
large
number
of
diverse
languages
and
diverse
cultures
within
the
district,
and
so
we
are
looking
to
meet
the
needs
of
all
of
our
students.
No
matter,
you
know
what
cultural
background
they
come
from.
B
A
Maybe
that
came
out
of
it
I
guess
you
could
look
at
it
two
ways,
but
that
people
that
are
closest
to
what's
happening
in
our
schools
that
touch
it
on
a
regular
basis,
have
the
most
positive
feeling
about
what's
happening
in
the
district
and
to
me
that
meant
those
of
us
that
don't
get
a
chance
to
be
that
close
need
to
reach
out.
We
do
be
asking
how
we
can.
B
Help
and
get
involved
absolutely-
and
you
know,
as
we
see
here
in
Oklahoma
City,
one
of
the
I'm
very
proud
of
all
of
the
end
will
say
the
Renaissance
that
were
experiencing
it's
very
exciting
to
see
all
of
the
new
business
and
industry
coming
into
our
communities.
We
love
having
the
Thunder,
we
love
having
the
new
soccer
team
and
the
energy,
and
so
all
of
those
are
bringing
energy
into
our
communities
into
our
Oklahoma
City
Community.
So
we
have
a
growth,
that's
going
on
everywhere.
B
Our
student
population
is
growing
just
as
much
and
so
with
all
of
the
new
ideas
and
all
the
new
energy
coming
across
with
all
of
the
other
industries.
Here
in
the
city,
it's
trickling
over
into
our
educational
system.
A
lot
of
people
do
not
know
what
is
going
on
with
Oklahoma
City.
They
just
automatically.
Have
this
thought?
B
Oh
well,
that's
you
know,
that's
that
school
district,
but
as
we
continue
to
talk
about
and
highlight
those
positive
things
that
our
school
district
does
excel
in
I
hope
to
better
educate
our
community
in
that,
because
we
do
have
a
lot
not
to
say
we
don't
have
a
lot
to
grow,
we
do
every
day
everybody
learned.
Somebody
is
something
new.
We
hope
we
do
it's
a
scary
day.
The
day
we
don't
learn
something.
A
A
The
refurbishment
rebuilding
or
completely
new
construction
of
every
school
in
the
I-89
district
lots
of
work
in
the
suburban
districts,
and
we
now
have
some
work
to
do
academically.
But
that's
what
you're
here
to
help
us
do
so
Gloria
I!
Thank
you
so
much
for
coming
in
today.
I
hope,
you'll
come
back
absolutely
share
with
us.
The
progress
I
think
have
you
attended
to
meetings
so
far?
We.
