Description
Oklahoma City Ward 6 Councilwoman Meg Salyer talks with Kelly Pearson about Friends of Edgemere School.
A
Hello,
I'm
Meg
Salyer
and
I'd
like
to
welcome
you
to
the
ward
6
council
show
today,
I'm
joined
by
different
of
mine,
Kelly
Pearson,
who
I
think
single-handedly
has
helped
reinvigorate
the
volunteer
network
and
some
of
the
community
activities
over
at
edgemere
school
Kelly.
Thank
you
for
being
here.
We
really.
A
B
Was
great
to
know
that
everybody
cared
about
this
school
and
so
I
thought
well,
if
our
neighborhood
cares,
I
bet
the
other
four
neighborhoods
that
surround
the
school
do
too
so
I
started
calling
around
there
and
we
ended
up
developing
friends
of
Edgemere
school
and
besides
the
neighbors,
we
got
the
alumni
involved
to
students,
former
students
who
went
there
back
in
the
40s.
They
ended
up
sharing
our
committee
and
talk.
A
B
B
A
But
you
know
I
think
one
of
the
things
that
we're
seeing
in
oklahoma
city
is
we
kind
of
embarked
on
this
great
renaissance
is,
is
people's
understanding
of
how
community
schools
and
neighborhoods
go
hand
in
hand?
You
can't
have
a
healthy
neighborhood
without
having
a
vital
and
healthy
community
school
and
starting
with
friends
of
Edgemere
erm.
It
was
just
a
great
stepping
stone
to
begin
to
get
the
neighborhood
engaged
right.
Really.
Thank
you
so
much
for
doing
that.
B
Maps
came
in
and
did
the
remodel
things
like
the
old
window.
Blinds
were
just
torn
down
thrown
out
because
they
were
ready
and
but
then
there
was
no
money
left
to
put
new
ones
up.
So
we
raised
money
to
do
that
and
an
alumni
Mike
Schmidt
a
I'm
going
to
go
blank
here
on
a
name
and
design
resources,
michael
smith,
michael
smith,
yeah
he
came
in
and
he
gave
us
the
sold
as
the
window
blinds
at
cost
and
actually
got
a
discount
on
those
and
then
did
all
the
installation.
A
B
That's
neat
and
we
put
in
a
full
playground
that
has
a
really
cool
basketball
court
and
the
basketball
court
can
convert
into
tennis
courts
or
a
volleyball
court.
We
have
swings,
we
have
tetherball,
I
mean
it's,
it's
just
a
fun
place
for
the
kids,
so
we
did
that
we
saw
to
it
that
the
school
was
fully
furnished
with
new
furniture,
so
we
have
all
had
all
new
furniture
put
in
I.
B
A
On
such
an
important
corner
there
at
30th
and
Walker,
it's
a
real
significant
structure
in
the
neighborhood
from
there
Kelly.
You
began
some
partnerships
and
one
that
I
was
familiar
with
just
because
I
knew
some
of
the
folks
in
I.
Think
the
loyal
class
was
called
peeps
and
it
was
partnering
with
the
edgemere,
with
the
Paseo.
B
Uh-Huh
the
artists
in
the
Paseo
and
several
volunteers
throughout
the
community
who
would
come
in
and
they
would
teach
art
classes
with
the
help
of
an
artist.
They
would
teach
these
art
classes
to
our
students
and
at
one
point
it
was
after
school
and
then
it
went
to
the
intersession
classes
and
so
they've
been
with
us.
The
whole
six
years,
I've
been
there
they're,
just
wonderful,
and
that
has
developed
into
a
really
neat
partnership
through
community
schools
that
we're
looking
at
where
our
teachers
are
going
to
go
through
a
play.
B
A
And
edgemere,
so
it
goes
both
ways.
I
want
to
reel
back
just
a
little
bit.
You
mentioned
the
word
community
schools.
There's
was
a
recent
announcement
that
the
school
board
had
decided
to
go
forward
and
identified
edgemere
school
as
a
community
school.
Pretend
I
know
nothing
about
this
and
begin
with
what
does
a
community
school?
What
does
that
mean?
Well.
B
B
A
B
Studio,
it's
not
just
about
the
students,
because
students
come
to
school
with
all
these
problems
that
they're
not
just
isolated.
It's
not
just
the
students,
so
we're
going
to
help
the
families
we're
going
to
help
the
communities
in
the
neighborhoods
and
try
to
make
it
a
a
healthier
place
for
everybody.
Great.
A
A
Talked
about,
oh
you,
OSU
okc
is
one
of
your
partners
and
we
know
we've
got
the
Paseo
district.
The
foundation
for
the
Oklahoma
City
Public
Schools,
has
always
been
dear
to
my
heart
and
is
an
organization
that
helps
support
those
needs
that
the
school
and
the
school
district
can't
do
in
and
of
itself.
So
a
little
bit
like
friends
of
Edgemere
on
a
larger
scale,
I
know
that
they're
working
closely
with
you.
They.
B
Are
they
have
for
the
whole
six
years
that
I've
been
involved
at
edgemere?
When
we
first
started
friends
of
Edgemere,
we
are
not
a
501c3
were
not
incorporated
or
anything,
and
so
we
needed
a
place
to
put
our
money
where
people
could
get
those
texts,
incentives
of
giving
to
us
and
they
created
a
pass-through
account.
So
we
were
the
Foundation's
first
pass
through
account,
and
so
schools
can
use
the
foundation
in
that
manner.
B
A
I
would
be
really
remiss
if
we
didn't
talk
a
little
bit
about
money,
because
that
seems
to
be
one
of
the
things
that
we're
always
short
of.
If
someone
wanted
to
help
edgemere,
they
can
do
so
through
the
foundation.
They
can
and
either
make
cash
donations
and
just
be
sure
to
designate
that
it
would
be
for
at
your.
B
A
B
A
Think
I
know
the
phone
number
correct
me
if
I'm
wrong,
but
I
think
it's
879
2007,
that's
correct
good!
I
got
that
one
in
my
rolodex,
terrific,
well
Kelly!
You
know
you
to
me
are
a
perfect
example
of
how
number
one
one
person
can
make
a
huge
difference
in
the
lives
of
our
children,
but,
secondly,
how
you
know
an
individual
can
rally
a
neighborhood
and
garner
the
kind
of
support
that
our
schools
and
our
kids
need
we're
not
in
this
alone
and
I.
Think
it's
important.
