Description

City officials cut the ribbon and open a MAPS 3 sidewalk along Western from SW 89th to SW 104th.

Six other MAPS 3 sidewalk segments are under construction or have recently been completed in south Oklahoma City.

Approximately $18 million is allocated to building sidewalks as a part of MAPS 3.

MAPS 3 is a 10-year, $777 million construction program designed to improve the quality of life in Oklahoma City. It is funded by a one-cent sales tax initiative that began in April 2010 and ends in December 2017. MAPS 3 funds eight projects: Downtown Convention Center, Downtown Public Park, Modern Streetcar/Transit, Oklahoma River Improvements, Oklahoma State Fairgrounds Improvements, Senior Health and Wellness Centers, Trails and Sidewalks.

This past 12 months has been incredible for the sidewalk construction and I really feel like at some point. In the last few months, the public finally started to buy in that maps. 3 was really happening before their eyes. I've obviously had the opportunity to be before a lot of public groups in the last few months and as I go through the Maps projects and the accomplishments and the continued development. When I get to the sidewalks heads start to nod, they have seen them and once again, you might say it's it's just a sidewalk.

It exceeds their expectation when they see the quality of the construction when they see the care that went into it. The engineering, the construction, the materials used. Once again, it seems a little bit more than just an ordinary sidewalk, and they understand now by connecting neighborhoods with retail establishments and schools and libraries is so very. Very important.

I have a sense that what we're seeing with the maps three sidewalk program is just the very beginning, because once you introduce a program like this, the citizens don't want to go back and what we're doing now is going to be the expectation for decades to come.

You know five to ten years ago, there was hardly any kind of talk concerning sidewalks and the importance of sidewalks. However, over the past several years have we, as we've, been adding these sidewalks to areas throughout the city I'm getting more and more comments favorable, as well as request for a continued increase in the number of sidewalks throughout South Oklahoma City I'm, not suggesting anything but I'm sure that the next Maps project should we have one.

These types of neighborhood projects will become very important to be a high priority in the next project and we still have plenty more work left to be accomplished and I know Tom's going to do a great job overseeing that.

These sidewalks are essential in connecting South Oklahoma City and making the businesses and the people have easier access to each other, as well as the safety for bikers and kids, and all that other stuff. That makes South Oklahoma City such a great place, a more walkable community, and thank you all very much for being here and didn't South Oklahoma City a great place to be. Thank you.
