Squeeze Every Drop - Repairing or Replacing Broken Spray Heads
Description
Robert Reaves shows you how to repair and replace broken spray heads in your irrigation system.
A
Hi, I'm robert reaves with the oklahoma city, water utilities, department, and today.
A
We're going to show you how to fix a broken pop up spray, head.
A
Lawn mowers or weed eaters can damage or break sprinkler heads..
If you're not aware of the damage.
A
A broken sprinkler can waste a lot of water.
A
The first thing you need to do is to turn on the zone with the broken sprinkler.
A
When the heads pop-up, look for problems like broken sprinkler, stems, clogged nozzles,.
A
Leaking caps, or cracked spray bodies..
This step is important because it.
A
Will determine whether or not you will need to do some digging.
if your problem is.
A
Just a clogged and broken nozzle,, you get lucky,, no digging needed.
A
Before the water turns off, place a flag next to each head, that needs to be repaired.
A
If the head has a worn seal under the spray cap,, a broken stem or nozzle,, all you need to do.
A
Is replace the internal portion of the spray head., but if the spray head is old,, I.
A
Would suggest replacing the entire spray body,, along with a brand new nozzle.
A
Unscrew, the top of the sprinkler and pull out the internal parts of the spray head.
A
Take it down to a local irrigation supply store and make sure you match the.
A
Brand and model.
purchase the new spray head and a new nozzle too..
Once you get home.
A
Unscrew, the top of the new spray head and drop it inside the old spray.
A
Head housing.
tighten down the new cap..
All new spray heads come with a flush cap.
A
Before installing a new nozzle, turn on the irrigation and flush out, any debris that.
A
Might be in the line.
turn off irrigation system.
A
Pull up the stem of the sprinkler head, unscrew, the flush cap, drop in the new filter, and then.
A
Screw in the nozzle.
turn on your irrigation system., it's possible.
The nozzle will be.
A
Spraying in the wrong direction., with both hands on the stem, ratchet around the.
A
Stem until the spray is directed in the correct position,.
A
Or turn the entire body of the spray head with your hands or a pair of pliers.
A
Now, if the body of the spray head is broken below ground you're, either going.
A
To need a hand trowel or a small shovel to make the repair.
dig around the spray.
A
Head until all soil is cleared away and you can see the bottom of the spray head.
A
If there is a great deal of water around the spray head, allow it to sink in.
A
Before removing the broken spray body., the spray head will be attached to the.
A
Pvc pipe with either a half-inch plastic, nipple or half-inch funny pipe fittings.
A
Funny pipe is flexible tubing and runs back to the pvc fitting in the pipeline.
A
Funny pipe uses fittings where one side is barbed and pushes into the funny pipe,.
A
While the other side is a half-inch thread that screws into the bottom of.
A
The spray head.
in most cases, all you'll need to do is carefully unscrew.
The.
A
Damaged spray body from the funny pipe fitting and replace the bad head with a new head.
A
Once you have installed a new spray body firmly pack in the soil.
A
Around the spray head and replace any sod around the head.
next flush, the.
A
Irrigation line with a flush cap in place,.
A
Turn off the irrigation, system, unscrew, the flush cap, drop in the nozzle filter, and screw on.
A
The new nozzle, and then adjust the direction of the spray.
A
So there you have it!
a quick fix for spray heads to help you squeeze every drop!.
A
Check out our next video on how to raise sunken spray, heads.
