Channel 7 Breaking news story about Glenview Fire
September 9, 2010
A
Burning
and
it's
that
close
it's
the
temperature
is
the
radiant
heat
is,
is
so
intense
that
you
have
to
bail
out,
and
you
can
see
this
is
virtually
the
point
of
impact
here.
This
is,
you
can
see
the
gas
explosion
just
consuming
this
home
in
a
moment
of
just
just
a
matter
of
minutes.
This
whole
house,
the
windows
blow
out
the
roof
catches
on
fire
and
just
in
a
couple
of
minutes
before
your
very
eyes,
an
entire
house
goes
up.
This
is
you
know
just
a
minute
or
two.
A
This
house
is
completely
gutted.
The
vehicle
outside
looks,
you
know
to
be
untouched,
but
the
radiant
heat
there
is
so
intense.
This
was
a
video
that
just
came
in
at
the
corner
right
there
of
claremont
and
vermont.
This
is,
if
you
will
ground
zero.
For
this
event,
we
believe,
because
of
what
the
officials
have
told
us,
that
a
high
pressure,
natural
gas
line
exploded
right
behind
that
home
and
completely
engulfed
it
in
flames.
A
I
don't
know
how
somebody
would
have
gotten
out
of
that
house
if
there
was
somebody
there
at
all,
and
we
don't
know
if
there
was,
but
the
fire
spread
from
that
point
immediately
to
the
house
next
door
into
the
immediate
vicinity
within
minutes.
This
is
just
the
first
initial.
You
know
moments
after
that
explosion.
You
can
see
how
quickly
that
house
is
being
consumed.
A
C
All
right
we
have
with
us
sitting
with
us
brian
carmody,
a
news
photographer
brian.
Thank
you.
Coming
in
you,
you
took
some
pictures.
You
tell
us
what
you
saw
and
walk
us
through
what
happened.
I
got.
D
There
about
15
minutes
after
it
happened
the
fire.
These
are
your
pictures,
that's
correct,
yeah,
the
fire
was
absolutely
absolutely
intense.
The
the
gas
line
is
actually
burning
right
behind
that
home
right
there
that
you
see
burning
and
what
struck
me
besides,
the
obvious
heat
was
the
sound
that
this
thing
was
making.
It
was
clear
to
me
when
I
got
there
that
this
was
something
to
do
with
gas
and
not
a
plane.
D
There
was
a
lot
of
debris
from
an
explosion
that
that
had
there
were
actually
holes
in
the
roofs
of
some
of
the
houses
from
rocks
that
were
falling
there
and
the
firefighters
were.
I
had
several
of
them
come
up
to
me
and
say
that
they
were
just
frustrated,
because
there
was
nothing
that
they
could
do
there.
They
were
just
getting
close,
couldn't
get
close,
because
the
houses
that
are
burning
are
in
the
zone
from
the
heat
from
the
actual
gas
itself.
D
That's
coming
up,
so
there
was,
they
could
even
get
near
this
house
to
even
try
to
put
it
out
that
house,
when
I
left
had
actually
burned
completely
to
the
ground.
There
was
a
house,
that's
what
we're
looking
at
now
correct
the
house.
Next
door
had
started
to
burn
and
they
were
going
to
try
to
make
a
stand
there.
Brian.
D
There
were
probably
15
houses
that
were
completely
on
fire
that
I
could
see
also
through
the
smoke
and
the
flames
down
this
road,
so
east
of
where
I
was
there
appeared
to
be
a
couple
of
large
buildings.
I
don't
know
if
those
were
apartment,
buildings
or
some
kind
of
rec
center
or
something,
but
something
had
completely
burned
down
the
other
house
bigger
than
that
it
looked
to
be
bigger
in
the
house.
I.
D
This
video
was
shot
at
the
corner
of
claremont
in
vermont
in
san
bruno,
and
I
I
got
there
and
we
actually
were
about
to
leave
the
area
just
because
it
was
so
hot.
I
actually
have.
I
actually
have
some
firefighter
gear
that
I
carry
with
me
and
I
actually
had
to
use
the
helmet
and
the
goggles
just
to
shoot
these
pictures
because
of
how
intense.
D
Around
the
cars
were
burning,
the
homes
were
burning,
everything
was
burning,
I
mean
green
grass.
Lawns
were
catching
on
fire
because
of
the
heat
it
was
just
amazing
did.
D
It
appeared
to
me
that
anybody
that
could
get
out
got
out
right
away.
There
was
no,
but
this
wasn't
something
where
people
were
gonna
stick
around
and
say
you
know
we're
gonna.
You
know
this
was
an
evacuate
immediately
exactly
this.
This
was
something
where
you
don't
need
the
authorities
to
tell
you
believe
their
people
were
literally
running
for
their
lives.
D
From
this
thing,
I
did
observe
the
firefighters
rescue,
a
dog
out
of
one
of
the
houses
that
was
really
nice
to
see
at
one
point,
the
firefighters
actually
commandeered
my
vehicle
and
took
a
person
out
that
had
been
very
badly
burned
in
my
car
because
they
didn't
have
any
other
way
to
get
this
victim
out
of
there
and
they
said,
can
we
have
your
car
and
I
said,
of
course-
and
I
gave
them
my
keys
to
my
car
and
they
transported
somebody
out
away,
and
I
had
to
find
my
vehicle
later
to
retrieve
it,
somebody
that
you
know
the
firefighters
had
left
it
up
at
a
command
post
that
was
about
five
blocks
away.
D
D
C
D
It
was
one
of
those
things
where
I
would
have
loved
to
get
closer,
but
I
couldn't
I
actually
shot.
There
were
some
pictures
that
I
shot
from
the
backyard
of
two
houses
down
from
where
this
thing
is
shooting
back
down.
It
looked
to
me
like
this
was
kind
of
in
a
ravine
area,
but
it
was
so
hard
with
the
smoke
and
everything
to
see
exactly
what
was
going
on.
You
know
and
roughly
how.
C
D
Half
an
hour
into
it,
you
see
that
you
see
the
firemen,
you
know
the
firemen
did
a
great
job.
What
they
did
in
the
beginning
is
what
they're
trying
to
do,
which
is
to
locate
and
rescue.
You
know
viable
victims
to
get
people
out.
You
know
these
shots,
you
see
them
not
trying
to
fight
the
fire.
D
They're
kind
of
at
this
point,
regrouping
yeah
what
they're
dealing
with
right
and
a
lot
of
the
guys
that
I
talked
to
when
I
got
there
were
still
working
on
the
impression.
This
was
that
this
was
a
plane
crash
right.
You
know
they.
They
really
didn't,
have
any
idea,
because
nobody
could
get
close
enough
to
see
what
exactly
was
happening
with
this
thing
sure.
B
D
D
B
That
initial,
just
fireball
that
we
saw
for
so
long
after
the
explosion.
I.
D
C
Well,
brian
you've
brought
us
some
remarkable
images,
very
close
up
of
of
the
beginning
of
what
has
turned
into
be
even
a
much
wider
tragedy,
as
many
at
least
35,
maybe
45
or
more
homes
have
met
the
same
fate
that
you're
looking
at
here
as
the
hours
have
progressed
about
three
hours
and
15
minutes
ago.
This
all
started
brian.
When
could
you
obviously
you
could
feel
the
heat
from
this?
When
could
you
see
the
fire?
How
close
were
you
when
you
could
begin
to
see
the
fireball
we?
Actually?
This
is.
D
A
dog
that
I
was
referring
to
before
you
actually
couldn't
see
the
fire
until
you
were
probably
about
four
or
five
blocks
away,
just
because
of
how
the
the
layout
of
the
hills
are
and
everything
in
this
area
you
know
and
the
fire.
It
appears
to
me
that
this
that
the
this
is
from
the
back
side
now
that
you're
telling
us,
no
that's
all
that
stuff
that
I've
zoomed
in
on
that's.
Actually,
this
is
the
area.
D
This
is
more
of
the
area
where
I
saw
those
there's
a
large
building
that
was
burning
the
yeah
and
that's
the
same
house
that
has
just
really
started
to
progress.
As
I
said
earlier
when,
when
I
left
the
scene,
this
house
was
on
the
ground
completely.
There
was
nothing
left.
It
looked
like
the
pictures
you
see
after,
like
a
large
forest
fire
right
through.
D
D
I
believe
it's
a
pink
house
that
house
you
can
see
in
these
pictures
is
just
starting
to
catch
on
fire.
That
house
was
well
involved
in
fire
when
I
left
and
certainly
burned
down
pretty
much
the
the
fire
department
did
finally
get
a.
They
were
using
an
aerial
ladder
truck
to
to
do
a
defensive
operation
on
that
that
house.
D
Firefighters
were
frustrated,
they
they
really
now.
This
is
the
stuff
that
I
shot
in
the
backyard
here
and
that's
actually
looking
right
down.
That's
as
close
as
I
could
get
to
chronic
ground
zero
right
there,
and
so
that's
another
street
that
travels
off
to
the
south
from
here.
D
This
is
the
latter
trump.
They
started
using
to
to
extinguish
that
pink.
C
D
D
C
D
This
is
their
defensive
job.
This
is
them
trying
to
to
stop
the
progression
of
the
fire,
so
the
fire
has
now
moved
into
this
pink
house
and
they
are
trying
to
keep
it
from
moving
on
to
the
next
house.
So
this
is
this
is
where
they
could
make
one
little
stand.
I
guess
is
the
way
to
put
it.
You
know
to
fight
this
whole
thing.
Is
them
trying
to
to
fight
this
next
house
and
to
keep
it
from
from
going
down
now?
D
This
is
this
kind
of
impressed
me
is
that
cd
or
cal
fire,
I
guess
they're
called
they
responded
with
two
air
tankers.
An
air
attack
hell
air
attack
plane,
and
then
this
helicopter
here
and
they
actually
started
to
do
water
drops,
which
are
usually
done
on
a
wildfire.
D
We
saw
they
came
over
and
I
actually
have
some
of
that
coming
up
here
if,
if
they
get
can
get
those
pictures
of
them
actually
making
air
drops
right
to
the
south
of
where
we
are
and
at
one
point,
that
helicopter
dropped
on
a
house
that
was
standing
right
next
to
where
I
was
oh,
I
bet
you
were
drenched,
I
was
trying.
I
didn't
I
didn't
get
drenched,
but
it's
really
really
loud
is
is
the
helicopters
than
when
they're
going
overhead.
C
B
D
C
B
Francis,
which
is
the
burn
center
in
san
francisco,
we've
heard
that
other
hospitals
are
preparing.
You
know
kaiser.
We
now
know
there
are
14
patients
at
saint
francis.
So
certainly
these
numbers
are
going
to
increase.
As
you
know,
different
hospitals
that
have
been
triaging
patients
decide,
which
ones
are
the
most
seriously
injured
and
need
to
be
sent
to
the
trauma.
Centers
the
burn
centers
all.
C
Right
while
you
were
there,
did
you
see
a
rapid
escalation
in
the
number
of
firefighters,
responding.
D
Yes,
they're.
Definitely
at
this
corner,
where
I
was
when
I
first
got
there.
There
was
this:
this
truck
company
from
daly
city
were
on
the
scene
and
they
were
joined
by
several
other
units
they
were
having
now.
This
is
something
I
don't
know
if
you
guys
were
talking
about
before,
is
they
they
had
a
severe
water
problem
here?
D
They
had
to
lay
a
line
from
plymouth
and
vermont
all
the
way
down
to
vermont
at
claremont
to
this
location,
and
that's
actually,
where
you
saw
on
the
left
side
there,
there
was
a
fire
engine
that
had
just
pulled
up.
They
actually
brought
a
supply
line
in
which
is
what
started
to
feed
this
ladder
truck
here.
That.
D
C
Well,
we're
going
to
try
to
just
let
this
tape
that
you
brought
us
brian
carmody
play
out
as
as
we
talk
about
it,
because
these
are
remarkable,
tragic
shots
at
ground
level
of
just
the
ferocity
of
the
flames
and
the
challenge
the
firefighters
have
faced.
And
you
can
only
imagine
that
you
know
the
terrible
terrible
sudden
scare
without
warning
that
the
people
who
lived
here
so
close
to
this
initial
explosion
had
to
contend.
B
With
just
absolutely
horrifying,
we
are
hearing
that
the
16
patients
that
we
initially
were
told
were
at
st
francis,
the
burn
center
in
san
francisco.
That's
not
an
accurate
count.
We're
told
there
are
16
patients
at
mills
peninsula
hospital,
the
facility,
that's
between
it's
in
burlingame,
right
at
the
border
of
burlingame
and
middlebury,
and
they
really
activated
their
emergency
response
at
that
hospital.
They
are
not
a
trauma
center,
but
they
are
well
prepared
to
deal
with
patients
coming
in
and
there
are
16
patients
there
now
and.
C
I
think
at
st
francis,
which
is
the
burn
center,
they
were
expecting
a
couple
of
people
at
last
word
and
and
who
knows,
if
more,
but
a
couple
yeah
go
ahead.
Brian
tell
us
what
we're
watching
this.
D
D
One
kind
of
an
interesting
to
note
when
we,
when
this
thing
first
happened,
we
heard
the
the
first
call
of
this
on
the
radio
and
the
first
engine
that
was
dispatched.
They
dispatched
them
for
a
house
fire
and
the
first
engine
came
right
back
over
the
radio
and
said
immediately.
They.
