B
Hi
welcome
to
the
San
Bruno
library
table
storytime
once
upon
a
time,
I'm,
so
glad
you're
here
to
join
us.
We're
gonna
have
today
some
butterflies
stories.
So
are
you
ready?
Let's
get
started
with
our
with
our
opening
song?
Okay,
let's
go
we're
glad
you're
here
today
we're
glad
you're
here
today,
hi-ho
Mary!
Oh
we're
glad
you're
here
today,
very
good.
My
name
is
Miss
Barbara
and
the
first
book
that
we're
going
to
read
is
called
butterfly
boy.
It's
by
Virginia
Kroll,
with
pictures
by
Gerardo
sazon.
B
Amelio
wheeled
of
well
Oh
his
grandfather
out
into
the
sunshine
down
the
ramp
that
Papa
had
built,
wait
for
me
here
and
I'll
get
a
book.
Emilio
said
darting
back
inside
Mama
and
Papa
said
that
abuelo
didn't
understand
words
anymore,
but
Emilio
was
sure
he
saw
a
gleam
in
Abuela's
eyes.
Whenever
he
read
to
him.
He
came
back
outside
and
pulled
up
a
lawn
chair
next
to
abuelo.
B
B
B
Every
sunny
afternoon,
Emilio
wheeled
abuelo
out
together,
they
watched
the
butterflies
after
a
while
Emilio
got
within
inches
of
them,
and
they
let
him
stay
near
as
if
they
knew
he
would
not
harm
them.
Emilio's
next-door,
neighbor,
mrs.
Salazar,
never
called
him
by
his
name.
After
that
she
called
him
butterfly
boy.
B
When
autumn
came,
the
butterflies
disappeared,
leaves
of
gold
and
brown
and
crimson
fluttered
in
their
place.
When
the
weather
broke
older,
Emilio
wheeled
abuelo
to
the
window
instead
and
he
watched
swirling
snowflakes
turned
the
world
white
and
hungry
sparrows
gobbled,
the
toast
crusts
that
Emilio
tossed
to
them
each
morning.
B
One
day
emilio
came
home
from
the
library
and
yelled
abuelo.
Look
at
this.
He
opened
a
book
about
butterflies,
remember
our
butterflies,
they're
called
red
and
admirals,
and
listen
to
this
they're
attracted
to
bright
surfaces
they
like
to
Sun
on
them.
That's
why
they're
always
on
the
garage
abuelo,
because
it's
white,
they're
hibernating
now
but
they'll,
be
back
in
the
spring
and
we
can
watch
them
again.
Emilio
saw
of
whales
eyes
glisten
as
he
stared
at
the
pictures
of
the
red
Admirals.
B
B
B
A
He
cried.
You
can't
paw.
B
Papa
took
off
his
cap
and
wiped
his
brow
change
it
back
after
painting
all
day,
Emilio
saw
frown
lines
on
Papa's
forehead
as
he
replaced
his
cap
and
dipped
his
brush
back
into
the
can.
He
also
saw
the
clouds
in
Abuelo's
eyes,
Emilio
shoulders
slumped.
He
watched
five
Admirals
flitting
here
and
there.
Turning
in
circles,
they
reminded
Emilio
of
wilting
leaves
tossed
in
wild
directions
by
autumn
winds.
B
Mama's
laundry
flapped
gently
on
the
line
Emilio
watched
as
if
he
were
in
a
trance
all
at
once.
He
lept
up
to
clothes,
prints,
clothespins
sprang
apart
and
flew
to
the
ground
as
Emilio
grabbed
his
bright
white
shirt
and
scrambled
to
put
it
on,
then
he
stood
stiff
and
silent
as
a
statue.
A
minute
past
15
minutes,
21
Red
Admiral
flooding
fluttered
close
closer.
It
landed
like
a
whisper
on
Emilio's
shoulder
soon.
There
was
one
on
his
other
shoulder
and
another
on
his
chest.
B
Mama
came
out
to
collect
the
laundry
she
stood
gaping
at
the
as
the
basket
tumbled
from
her
hands.
Papa
finished
his
last
blue
stroke.
He
took
his
cap
off
and
wiped
his
brow,
mrs.
Salazar
peered
over
her
fence,
clucking
her
tongue
and
shaking
her
head
and
wearing
her
broadest
smile,
incredible,
unbelievable
butterfly
boy.
B
Papa
was
startled
what
he
said.
Then
he
understood
Emilio
heard
Papa
call
to
mama
I'll
be
home
in
20
minutes.
Where
are
you
going?
Mama
asked
Papa
looked
at
Emilio
and
abuelo
as
he
answered
Mama's
question
to
the
hardware
store
for
a
few
gallons
of
white
paint
garage
needs,
painting
save
some
for
my
fence,
mrs.
Salazar
called
it's
about
time.
I
painted
it
too.
B
Emilio
tried
very
hard
not
to
laugh.
He
felt
as
if
his
heart
would
burst
from
his
chest.
He
kept
his
head
still,
so
the
butterflies
would
stay
but
shifted
his
eyes
to
see
Abuelo's
face
the
corners
of
a
wellas
mouth
turned
up
and
his
eyes
danced
and
twinkled
like
Twilight
stars
and
that's
the
story
of
butterfly
boy.
B
So
my
next
story
is
about
a
different
kind
of
butterfly.
This
is
about
the
monarch
butterfly,
it's
called
hurry
and
the
monarch,
the
monarch,
butterflies,
take
a
long
trip
in
the
winter,
and
this
book
is
about
their
trip
from
Canada
down
to
Mexico
and
the
butterflies
on
our
side
of
the
country
go
to
the
California
coast
in
the
winter.
You
can
even
see
them
around
here
hurry.
The
Texas
tortoise
is
starting
to
think
about
winter
when
out
of
bright
ox
October
sky,
a
monarch,
butterfly
lands
on
his
back.
B
What
do
you
call
this
place?
Ask
the
monarch,
Wichita
Falls,
says
hurry
and
that's
my
back
you're
standing
on
Wichita
Falls,
not
far
enough,
says
the
monarch
not
far
enough
for
what
asked
hurry
for
staying's
replies
the
monarch
with
that
the
monarch
opens
up
her
wings
and
flies
off
hurries
back
I
level
with
hurry.
Now
the
monarch
seems
fascinated
with
the
old
tortoise.
B
How
long
have
you
been
here?
That's
the
monarch
seems
like
forever
says
hurry.
Maybe
one
day
you'll
break
out
of
that
she'll
grow
wings
and
fly
away
said
the
monarch
all
right
out.
It
says
hurry.
It
happened
to
me
replies
the
monarch,
thinking
about
that
extraordinary
morning
when
she
first
opened
her
wings.
B
Where
did
this
happen
asks
hurry
far
away
in
a
place
called
Canada
in
a
garden
just
like
this
why'd
you
leave
asked
hurry.
The
day's
got
colder
says
the
monarch.
What
do
you
do
when
the
days
get
colder?
Sleep
answers
hurry
cold
days,
always
change
back
into
warm
days.
If
you
wait,
I
don't
have
time.
For
that
says
the
monarch
flying
away
from
the
garden
she
joins
more
monarchs.
They
turn
the
sky
orange
as
they
continue
their
journey
south
towards
Sweetwater
back
in
the
garden,
a
cloud
passes
over
the
Sun
and
hurry
shuts
his
eyes.
B
B
Each
new
day
brings
new
sights
sometimes
a
day
brings
danger,
but
the
monarch
survives
flying
now
toward
Eagle
pass
then
over
the
waters
of
the
Rio
Grande
into
Mexico
on
and
on.
She
flies
until
finally,
one
November
evening,
she
finds
it
the
warm
green
forest
she
had
been
searching
for.
She
hangs
from
about
adding
her
tired
wings
to
the
soft
murmur
of
a
million
others,
the
monarch
in
flight
from
winter
knows
she
has
found
the
perfect
place
spring
returns
to
her
ease
garden.
He
slowly
opened
his
eyes
and
feels
the
warmth
of
the
Sun.
B
Never
fails
thanks
hurry,
then,
one
morning
the
monarch
also
returns.
So
where
are
you
going
now
ass
hurry
back
to
the
beginning
answers
the
monarch?
Do
you
mean
Canada
asked
hurry?
Possibly
since
the
monarch,
butterflies
can
be
infuriatingly
mysterious
thanks
very
watching
the
monarch
lay
eggs
on
a
milkweed
plant,
then
she
flies
away
in
the
town
of
Stillwater.
She
flies
through
an
open
window
and
thinks
it
might
be
nice
to
rest
her
worn
wings
for
a
while
well
in
the
folds
of
the
Sun
colored
curtain
for
a
while
becomes
forever.
B
Back
in
the
garden
over
by
the
milkweed
plant,
hurry
sees
a
newborn,
caterpillar
hello
says
hurry,
but
the
caterpillar
doesn't
answer
it's
too
busy
eating.
The
milkweed
leaves
hurry,
watches
and
waits
as
the
caterpillar
grows,
shedding
skin
after
skin
then
crawling
away
to
hide
under
a
twig.
But
this
garden
is
hurries
whole
world,
and
there
is
little
in
it
that
it
is
hidden
from
him
in
the
weeks
that
follow
Hari
sees
an
amazing
transformation
happen
right
in
front
of
his
still
and
patient
eyes.
B
B
B
B
And
then,
if
you
come
to
the
library
and
check
out
this
book,
you
can
find
out
more
about
the
Monarchs
trip.
South
so--that's
hurry
and
the
monarch
I
have
one
rhyme
to
share
with
you
before
we
go
to
our
break.
It's
called
the
caterpillar,
so
get
your
hands
ready,
got
him
ready
all
right,
a
caterpillar!
Here's
your
caterpillar
crawl
to
the
top
of
a
tree,
I
think
I'll,
take
a
nap
said.
He,
though,
under
the
leaf,
he
began
to
creep
the
spin
a
cocoon,
and
then
he
fell
asleep
all
winter
long.
B
A
All
cyclists,
adults
and
children
should
follow
standard
safety
precautions.
One
of
the
first
and
best
tools
to
remember
is
never
wear
a
hat.
Under
your
bike.
Helmet
the
helmet
should
be
worn
level
and
cover
your
forehead.
The
straps
should
always
be
fastened.
A
head
injury
means
a
brain
injury.
If
your
helmet
doesn't
have
a
Consumer,
Product,
Safety
Commission
sticker
get
one
that
does
you
can
even
personalize
it
with
some
of
your
favorite
stickers.
A
Got
a
sports
lover
in
the
house
check
out
all
the
different
sports
programming
available
on
Sandburg,
ok,
Bowl,
ESPN,
Comcast,
SportsNet,
Golf
and
Tennis
Channel's
college
sports,
professional
soccer
football
hockey
and
more?
And
if
you
have
a
high-definition
television,
upgrade
to
HD
for
the
most
crystal-clear
sharp
images
available
on
TV
today,
and
thank
you
for
choosing
San
Bruno
municipal,
cable,
television
for
your
cable,
TV,
Internet
and
digital
phone
services.
B
B
Did
you
know
you
can
come
to
the
library
any
time
during
the
year
and
hear
a
real-live
story?
Time
I
hope
you
come
visit.
Us
okay,
Jake's
house
was
empty,
except
for
the
overstuffed
trunk
in
the
middle
of
the
floor,
sit
down
on
it.
Mama
Papa
instructed
his
sisters
giggled
as
they
watched
mama
bounce
up
and
down,
while
Papa
tried
to
close
the
latch
but
Jake
just
stared
out
the
windows
he
kept
thinking
about
how
much
he
would
miss
grandpa.
B
B
Are
you
sure
they
will
grow
in
America
grandpa
Jake
asked,
sadly,
grandpa
pressed
the
little
box
tightly
into
Jake's
hand
and
nodded
that
evening,
Jake's
family
crowded
onto
the
deck
of
the
great
SS
Celtic
many
of
the
passengers
were
carrying
balls
of
yarn
with
the
ends
trailing
over
the
side
of
the
boat.
When
the
ship
pulled
away
from
the
dock.
Those
left
behind,
held
the
ends
and
watched
the
line
stretch
out
across
the
ocean.
Jake
could
barely
see
grandpa
when
his
yarn
line
was
pulled
from
his
hand.
B
That
night,
the
ship
tossed
rolling
the
passengers
back
and
forth
in
their
narrow,
bunk
beds,
Jake
couldn't
sleep
he
reached
over
and
slipped
his
hand
into
his
jacket
pocket.
What
do
you
have
there?
Benny
asked
the
boys
moved
closer
to
the
dim
in
cabin
light,
their
butterfly
seeds,
Jake
said
opening
the
tin.
What
kind
of
seeds
a
few
sleepy
eyed
children
asked
as
they
crawled
down
from
their
bunks,
then
Jake
told
them
about
grandpa's
seeds
and
the
beautiful
butterfly
garden
he
would
plant
in
America.
B
Look
what
I'm
bringing
to
look,
what
I'm
bringing
to
America
Benny
exclaimed
and
then
the
show-and-tell
game
began
Benny,
let
every
one
hold
his
real
gold
pocket
watch.
Jake
sisters
paraded
their
porcelain
dolls,
they
were
spinning,
tops
hand
painted
eggs,
musical
instruments
and
even
a
lucky
horseshoe,
but
everyone
agreed
that
Jake's
butterfly
seeds
were
the
best
of
all
except
Albert,
who
ever
heard
of
butterfly
seeds.
He
said
and
just
played
his
harmonica.
B
After
two
long
weeks,
the
ship
docked
in
New
York
Papa
held
tightly
to
mama
and
the
children,
as
everyone
was
herded
onto
the
waiting
ferry
boats.
When
the
fairies
reached
Ellis
Island,
the
passengers
were
shuffled
into
long
lines
to
be
inspected,
Jake's
heart
raced
as
he
slowly
inched
up
in
line.
He
wondered
if
they
would
take
away
his
seeds.
The
inspectors
looked
in
Jake's
eyes
and
ears,
but
not
in
his
pockets.
Grandpa's
seeds
were
safe.
B
B
The
next
morning,
Jake
was
up
early
below
he
spotted
a
fruit
vendor
and
emptying
crates
of
apples
into
his
cart.
Could
I
have
that
empty
crate.
Sir
Jake
yelled
down
before
mr.
Garr,
giulio,
could
figure
out
where
the
question
had
come
from.
Jake
was
standing
breathlessly
beside
him,
I'm
gonna
make
a
window
box.
I
can
plant
my
grandpa's
seeds
in
it
and
that's
why
I
need
the
crate
he
blurted
out.
You
can
have
the
crate
boy,
but
I,
don't
think
it's
any
good
for
planting
seeds.
Mr.
Gore
Giulio
wiggled
his
fingers
between
the
slats.
B
B
Jake
hurried
across
the
street
to
the
blacksmith's
shop
to
show
Papa.
It
was
Papa's
first
day
at
his
new
job
and
he
didn't
pay
much
attention
when
Jake
asked
for
his
advice,
I
need
a
way
to
keep
this
crate
from
falling
off
our
windowsill
Jake
shouted
over
the
ring
of
the
anvil.
Maybe
I
can
help
you,
someone
hollered.
It
was
mr.
O'malley,
the
shop
owner.
He
knew
just
what
Jake
needed.
He
hammered
two
bars
of
red-hot
metal
into
a
strong,
a
pair
of
window
box,
hangers.
B
It
was
a
hot
summer
Jake
and
his
new
friends
climbed
the
fire
escape
everyday
to
check
the
window
box.
They
would
hang
over
the
railing
and
search
through
the
bushy
plants
for
butterflies.
Maybe
your
silly
old
grandpa
got
the
seeds
mixed
up.
Albert
would
mutter
jake
began
to
wonder
if
grandpa's
seeds
were
magic
or
just
a
story
made
up
for
a
homesick
boy,
then
one
day,
the
sky
rumbled
in
a
sudden
rain
shower
drenched
the
hot
steaming
streets.
B
When
the
Sun
reappeared
merchants
and
shoppers
filled
the
streets
once
more,
the
children
went
back
to
their
play.
Suddenly
mr.
Garr
giulio
called
out
look
at
that
beautiful
butterfly.
The
children
chased
the
butterfly
through
the
crowded
street
until
it
flew
up
to
Jake's
window
box.
Look
at
them
all.
Albert
shouted
Jake,
hurts
Albert's
yell
and
opened
his
window.
B
He
saw
a
tiny
mushroom,
peeking
out
of
the
ground
in
a
clearing
and
hid
under
it.
He
sat
there
waiting
for
the
rain
to
stop,
but
the
rain
came
down
harder
and
harder,
a
wet,
butterfly
crawled
up
to
the
mushroom
cousin
aunt.
Let
me
come
in
from
the
rain.
I
am
so
wet.
I
cannot
fly.
How
can
I?
Let
you
in
and
said
the
aunt.
There
is
barely
enough
room
for
one
does
not
matter
said
the
butterfly,
better,
crowded
and
wet
the
aunt
moved
over
and
made
room
for
the
butterfly.
B
A
B
B
Have
you
seen
the
rabbit?
Which
way
did
he
go?
He
asked
we
have
not
seen
him.
The
Fox
came
nearer
and
sniffed.
There
was
a
rabbit
smell
around.
Isn't
he
hiding
here
you
silly
Fox?
How
could
a
rabbit
get
in
here?
Don't
you
see
there
isn't
any
room?
The
Fox
turned
up
his
nose
flicked
his
tail
and
ran
off
by
then
the
rain
was
over.
The
Sun
looked
out
from
behind
the
clouds,
and
everyone
came
out
from
under
the
mushroom
right
and
Mary.
B
B
Somebody
laughed
loudly
behind
them.
They
turned
and
saw
a
fat
green
frog
sitting
on
top
of
the
mushroom
shaking
his
head
at
them
said
the
Frog,
don't
you
know
what
happens
to
a
mushroom
in
the
rain
and
he
hopped
away
still
laughing
the
ant,
the
butterfly
the
mouse,
the
sparrow
and
the
rabbit
looked
at
one
another,
then
at
the
mushroom,
and
suddenly
they
knew
why
there
was
room
enough
under
the
mushroom
for
them
all.
B
And
that's
the
story
of
the
mushroom
in
the
rain,
so
I
hope
you'll
come
visit
us
at
the
library.
We're
gonna
do
our
rhyme
one
more
time,
but
we
have
lots
of
mushroom
stories
and
butterfly
stories
and
fact
books
about
those
things
too
that
you
can
learn
about
at
the
library.
You
can
even
borrow
them
with
your
library
card
and
take
them
home.
Read
them
at
home.
All
right
get
your
caterpillar
out
you
little
caterpillar,
the
caterpillar
crawled
to
the
top
of
the
tree.
