San Bruno City Council Meeting October 13, 2015
4c. Tanforan Assembly Center Memorial Presentation
A
B
Thank
You
mr.
mayor
members
of
the
City
Council,
it's
sort
of
uncomfortable
for
me
to
be
on
this
side
of
the
dais,
but
I
do
appreciate
the
time
that
you're
going
to
give
me
in
this
presentation.
I
also
want
to
thank
Connie,
Jackson
or
staff
for
putting
together
a
wonderful
staff
report,
and
you
know,
like
all
good
City,
Council
members,
I'm
sure
you
read
the
report,
so
you
don't
really
need
to
hear
from
me.
B
There
are
nine
camps
to
in
Arizona
to
in
California
my
family
went
to
one
in
Utah.
There
was
even
one
in
Arkansas
and
Minnesota,
but
prior
to
moving
a
hundred
and
twenty
hundred
and
twenty
thousand
persons
of
Japanese
ancestry
to
these
internment
camps.
They
had
to
build
what
they
call
assembly
centers.
There
were
several
hundred
of
those
but
out
throughout
the
west
coast
when
we're
talking
about
specifically,
is
one
here
at
the
old
tanforan
racetrack.
B
Now
what
they
did
is
they
built
barracks
on
the
infield
of
the
camp
friend
racetrack,
but
there
were
over
almost
8,000
Japanese,
who
are
in
turn
there,
so
they
really
didn't
have
enough
room
in
the
barracks.
So
I
was
only
six
weeks
old,
so
I
don't
remember,
but
my
mom
was
telling
me
the
story
that
we,
my
sister
father
and
mother.
We
had
to
live
in
a
horse
barrack
for
several
weeks
until
they
built
more
barracks
and
the
only
thing
that
my
mom
remembered
about
that
whole
incident
was.
B
What
my
committee
is
trying
to
do?
I'm
a
member
of
the
tanforan
assembly,
Center
Memorial
Committee.
We
have
Doug
Yamamoto,
who
is
the
chairman
of
the
committee,
we're
trying
to
put
together
a
memorial,
and
we
wouldn't
work
in
with
the
Santa
with
the
bart,
and
they
have
graciously
allowed
us
to
put
a
memorial
on
their
plaza
right
behind
the
station
between
the
tamarind
shopping
center,
where
you
I've
also
gotten
a
very
good
cooperation
from
the
tamarind
shopping
center.
They
are
very
interested
in
helping
us
create
this.
B
But
what
we're
here
for
tonight
is
two
things
one.
We
feel
as
though
this
particular
memorial
and
you
have
it
in
your
staff
report
the
the
conceptual
plan.
This
isn't
exact
ones,
we're
going
to
do,
but
it's
conceptually
close.
We
feel
as
though
it's
going
to
be
a
really
wonderful
city
attraction,
because
it's
going
to
be
pretty
significant,
probably
one
of
the
more
significant
ones
here
on
the
west
coast
and
what
we
would
like
for
you
again
is
two
things.
B
B
You
know
we
feel
as
though
this
is
going
to
be
a
you
know,
wonderful
city
attraction
for
you
and
that
we're
hoping
that
per
the
city
might
consider
some
maintenance
in
conjunction
with
Bart.
They
are
considering
doing
that
as
well.
But
what
I
wanted
to
do
is
just
ask
you
for
those
two
things
and
introduce
Doug
elma
moto,
to
tell
you
exactly
what
the
memorial
is
going
to
look
like
and
to
talk
about
a
event
that
we're
having
here
in
San
Bruno
on
Saturday
October
thirty-first
at
the
san
bruno
bart
station
Doug.
C
Thank
you
very
much
for
hearing
us
out
tonight.
We
this
the
building
of
this
memorial
statue
in
Plaza,
has
been
part
of
a
three-year
project.
We
first
started
out
with
an
exhibit
exhibit
that
still
at
the
stan
bruno
bart
station
that
features
the
photos
of
Dorothea
Lange
taken
in
1942
of
many
of
the
people
who
ended
up
in
tanforan
and
later
shipped,
mostly
to
topaz,
where
Steve
Steve's
family
also
went
50,
50
years
plus
60
years
later,
Paul
kita,
gawky
who's,
a
hewlett
surprise.
C
Winning
photographer
for
the
Sacramento
Bee
discovered
that
his
own
family,
including
his
father,
who
was
13
years
old
at
the
time,
was
photographed
by
dorothea
lange
and
so
what
he
went
back
to
the
National
Archives
tracked
down
his
his
some
of
those
photos
and
tracked
down
some
of
the
very
people
that
Dorothea
Lange
took
in
1942
little
girls,
who
are
now
in
their
70s
teenagers,
who
were
who
are
in
their
80s
and
90s,
and
we
took
their
photos
and
that's
those
are
the
photos
that
are
that
are.
Are
there
right
now?
C
Bart
has
committed
for
them
to
be
there
as
part
of
a
permanent
exhibit
and
this
staff
out
of
that
became
this
idea
to
have
a
more
public,
a
publicly
accessible
memorial
project.
That
features
the
name
teams
of
all
8,000
people
who
were
in
turn
there
at
at
at
tanforan,
and
a
bronze
statue
based
on
a
couple
of
the
children
that
Dorothea
Lange
took
the
pictures.
C
In
1942
we've
selected,
an
artist
Sandra
Shaw
I
was
associated
with
the
American
fine
arts
foundry
down
in
Los
Angeles
to
be
the
artist
we've
gotten
support
to
do
the
overall
design
and
support.
We
were
lucky
enough
to
to
obtain
the
services
of
rha
royston
hamamoto
ave,
who
were
a
renowned
landscape
architect.
We
didn't
have
them
in
the
beginning,
but
in
the
past
year
they've
they've
come
aboard
they've
to
get
there
just
briefly
about
their
background
David
they
did
the
master
plan
for
Golden
Gate
Park
in
San
Francisco.
C
They
did
the
Union
Square
that
whole
design
they
done
work
in
Yosemite.
They
didn't
done
work
in
UC,
Berkeley,
etc.
So
they
have
the
expertise
and
experience
to
what
we
believe.
We
complete
a
worthwhile
project
that
will
last
through
the
generations
and
be
a
part
of
keeping
history
alive
in
San
Bruno.
What
what
happened
here
and
we
think
that's
that's-
why
we're
we're
working
on
this
project
too?
It's
not
so
much
us
it's
for
our
children
and
the
children
of
other
other
communities
to
say
this
is
what
happened
and
it
shouldn't
happen
again.
C
C
We're
hoping
to
get
you
support,
so
October
thirty-first
were
having
another
reception
at
the
site
and
we're
inviting
you.
Hopefully
one
of
you
from
the
from
this
city
of
San
Bruno
would
be
willing
to
speak
along
with
representative
Jackie
Speier
who's
going
to
be
there.
A
Jerry,
Hill
state,
senator
our
photographer
paul
kita
gawky
so
and
we
hope
to
just
kind
of
jump,
start
the
fundraising
campaign
to
build
the
memorial.
So
thank
you
in
any
questions.
Yeah.
A
I
have
just
a
couple
of
questions.
First
of
all,
I
think
I
can
speak
for
the
counselor.
We
totally
support
this.
This
is
a
wonderful,
wonderful
effort.
We've
can
we've
contributed
our
time
and
efforts
to
other
commitments
as
you've
had
over
near
tanforan.
For
the
same
reason
and
I
think
this
is
good.
A
The
only
thing
I
want
more
information
on
any
work
for
staff
already
is
you
mentioned,
cooperate
with
Bart
on
maintenance,
I,
don't
know
if
that
means
have
a
guy
there
every
day,
once
a
month,
I
really
want
to
get
a
better
feel
for
it.
Obviously,
anything
you're
requesting
has
not
been
budgeted
in
this
cycle,
so
I'd
sure
like
to
find
out
what
that
real
cost
is,
and
what
what
the
maintenance
is,
that
the
portion
of
the
maintenance
that
would
be
San
Bruno.
So
any
any
of
the
questions
from
the
council
through
the
chair.
B
A
B
Right
and
I'm
going
to
give
to
staff
the
brochures
that
we're
going
to
be
handing
out.
As
doug
said,
this
is
the
kickoff
for
our
fundraising
campaign.
We
need
to
raise
about
nine
hundred
thousand
dollars
and
we're
hoping
that
a
big
chunk
of
that
will
come
from
the
National
Park
Service
grant.
That's
why
it's
so
important
that
we
get
something
in
writing
from
the
city
that
yes
reduce
support
it.
Okay,.
