Senior Moments# 9 Step Out For Seniors
A
So
you
can
walk
from
the
Senior
Center
walk
in
through
the
city
park
and
into
the
county
car
and
all
the
trails
there
and
then
you're
just
walked
to
the
end
of
the
Senior
Center
parking
lot
and
head
over
into
the
city
park,
which
has
you
know
that
nice
paved
path
which
you
know,
keep
track
of
your
laps
and
how
far
you're
going.
So
I
think
it's
it's
very
convenient
for
walking.
Walking
is
good
for
you.
D
A
Essential
thing
you
can
do
this
is
the
10th
anniversary
of
the
event.
It's
a
walk
and
health
awareness
event
and
when
we
first
started
it
was
sponsored
by
the
California,
Park
and
Rec
society,
and
it
was
step
out
for
senior
centers
where
all
the
local
senior
centers
would
have
a
walk
and
they
provided
t-shirts
and
we'd.
Just
do
a
health
event
for
all
the
senior
centers
us
doing
our
own
thing.
A
Well,
that
stopped
in
about
two
thousand
three,
so
I
decided
to
keep
the
event
going
so
now
we're
on
2009
and
we
started
a
shorter
walk
in
a
longer
walk,
because
a
lot
of
our
regular
walkers
and
hikers
enjoyed
just
going
somewhere
different.
If
you
sure
we're
going
to
Lake
Merced
and
walk
in
the
loop,
they
share.
The
walk
to
lake
merced
is
4.8
miles,
with
an
option
to
cut
it
off
about
half
a
mile.
If
you
need
to
so
four
and
a
half
to
four
point,
eight
and.
C
A
Back
the
shorter
walk
has
become
kind
of
critical,
because
that
hits
the
people
that
don't
can't
do
a
longer
walk
and
really
need
to
kind
of
just
get
a
little
nudge
to
to
get
out
there
and
do
it
and
from
from
the
walk,
we
usually
get
some
people
that
then
get
interested
and
do
more
regular
walking.
So
the
shorter
walk
is
in
the
city
park
and
it
can
be,
as
short
as
going
to
the
end
of
the
parking
lot
and
back
or
going
several
loops
in
the
city
park
and
that's
led
by
a
different
leader.
C
A
We've
done
also
in
the
past
on
some
other
exercise
things
after
the
walk,
stretching
Tai,
Chi
seated
yoga.
Anything
health-related
to
kind
of
you
know
add
to
the
theme
we
have
health
booths
with
vendors,
either
having
walk
and
health
information
or
doing
testing
like
blood
pressure,
screening
body
mass
index
grip
strength,
things
of
that
sort.
B
My
name
is
Brooke
Benjamin,
I'm,
famila,
insula
health
services.
Today
we're
doing
screenings
for
the
community,
we're
doing
grip,
strength,
screening
and
also
body
mass
index
to
determine
people's
height
and
weight
and,
if
they're,
in
a
healthy
range
for
both
strength
and
their
height
and
weight
as
we're
giving
them
some
suggestions
about
exercise,
whether
it
be
cardiovascular,
strength,
training,
flexibility
and
what
they
should
do
to
help
themselves.
Pam.
E
O'neill
at
the
American
Heart
Association,
they
invited
me
to
pass
out
information
about
heart,
disease
and
stroke
and
heart
health
and
controlling
your
risk
factors
which
they're
obviously
doing
by
going
on
the
walk.
So
the
cause
is
definitely
are
related.
A
lot
of
blood
pressure
crushed
questions.
We
do
know
that
seventy-five
percent
of
the
risk
factors
are
controllable
through
walking
and
exercising
controlling
what
you
eat.
So
just
getting
that
message
out
and
a
lot
of
them
say
that
they
still
have
high
blood
pressure,
even
though
they
walk.
But
twenty-five
percent
is
genetic,
so
walking.
A
Promotes
cardiovascular,
fitness,
it's
you
know
for
some
people,
it's
it's
a
start
to
doing
other
things.
You
know
just
get
you
get
you
into
the
mode.
You
may
see
some
changes
in
your
in
your
you
know
your
health,
your
weight,
your
endurance
and
then
you're
encouraged
to
try
other
things
so
that
the
Senior
Center
we
have
tai
chi
yoga.
You
know,
exercise
classes,
Pilates,
all
kinds
of
things
that
you
know
it
may
just
motivate
you
to
do
other
things,
but
walking
is
always
easy.
It's
cheap!
You
know,
and
you
can
do
it.
C
My
name
is
Kathy
Schmidt
and
I.
Am
a
group
exercise
instructor
over
for
the
nine
o'clock?
Am
fitness
class
and
I
also
teach
tension
line
dancing
on
Wednesdays
there?
My
role
today
is
I
was
coordinating
the
event
for
the
walkers
in
the
park.
There's
two
different
walks
that
were
happening
today,
one
list
for
hikers.
He
called
him
the
ones
that
are
going
4.8
miles
and
they're
going
around
lake
merced.
C
The
walk
that
I
did
was
for
people
who
are
just
getting
started
in
walking
or
didn't
feel
that
4.8
was
what
they
felt
like
doing
today,
always
a
little
too
much
we
went
in
took
a
nice
beautiful,
walk
down
at
the
park,
we're
here
in
san
bruno.
It
has
won
the
most
beautiful
glorious
part,
it's
a
great
trail.
It's
even
everyone
has
a
great
time
and
some
people
walk
around
the
park
once
two
times
three
times.
