A
So,
thank
you
so
much
for
coming
and
participating
in
the
redistricting
process.
your
voice
and
your
committee's
voice
is
so
important
to
this.
Process.
public
input
is
pivotal
to
the
process
of
redistricting
and
I
hope
that
you
all
will
submit
your
own
public
testimony
today,
either
in
person
or
online..
We
rely
so.
A
A
Redistricting?,
the
city
council
appointed
this
advisory
commission
to
study
and
make
recommendations
with
respect
to
redistricting..
There
is
one
commissioner
per
district,
and
a
majority
of
them
are
here
with
us
today
listening
to
you.,
and
so
they
can
go
back
to
the
city
council
with
recommendations.
A
A
A
A
Known
examples
are
congressional
and
state
legislative
districts,
but
local
governments
must
also
do
redistricting..
The
city
of
san
jose
must
go
through
this
process,
as
it
did
in
2011
to
ensure
the
city.
Council
districts
are
rebalanced
after
the
decennial
census.
beyond
creating
districts
of
equal
population,.
Redistricting
also
serves
to
empower
local
communities
and
preserve
voting.
A
Rights.
redistricting
on
the
county
level
affects
your
community
and
it's
so
important
that
community
members
are
involved
in
this
process,
so
they
have
an
input
on
their
head
on
how
their
neighborhoods
are
drawn..
Redistricting
ensures
districts
are
balanced
in
regards
to
population,
but
it
also
serves
to
empower
communities
and
preserve
voting
rights.,
so
you're
a
district
in.
A
Commission.,
the
council
appointed
a
10
member
redistricting
commission,
as
we
mentioned
earlier
to
a
system
and
community
outreach..
The
goals
of
the
commission
are
as
follows.
to
conduct
community
outreach
hearings
such
as
today
identify
committees
of
interest
from
public
input
and
ultimately
present
a
recommendation
map
to
the
city.
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
And
next
we
will
go
over
communities
of
interest..
This
is
gonna,
be
a
huge
part
of
the
presentation..
So
a
committee
of
interest
is
a
neighborhood
community
or
group
of
people
who
have
common
policy
concerns
and
will
benefit
from
being
maintained
in
a
single
district..
Communities
of
interest
are
defined
by
you,
the
local
community
members..
A
Another
way
of
understanding
a
creative
interest
is
that
it's
simply
a
way
for
a
community
to
tell
its
own
story
about
what
neighbors
share
in
common
and
what
makes
it
unique
when
compared
to
other
surrounding
communities.
keeping
communities
of
interest
together
is
an
important
principle
and
redistricting.
It
can
be
especially
helpful
to
communities
that
have
been
traditionally
left
out
of
political
process..
Community
members
can
define
the
communities
by
telling
their
own
stories
and
describing
their
concerns
to
policymakers..
A
A
A
A
Interest?
maps
act
explicitly
prohibits
these
groups
from
being
considered,
as
can
use
of
interest
political
party
affiliation.
so,
for
example,
republicans
or
democrats,
incumbents
and
political
candidates.
It
is
also
hard
in
redistricting
to
truly
utilize
groups
of
similarly
minded
people
who
do
not
share
a
geographic
location
or
are
city
wide.,
and
while
the
final
call
it
is
not
illegal
under
the
fair
maps
act,
it
is
quite
difficult
to
draw
under
a
community
of
interest.
we're.
A
A
Questions
to
think
about
when
you
are
drawing
your
own
committee
of
interest
or
thinking
about
your
move
interests
are..
Does
your
community
have
a
shared
culture,
characteristics
or
bond??
As
I
mentioned,
earlier,
personal
stories
are
so
powerful,
so
finding
committee
members
willing
to
share
examples
of
things.
residents
share
common
and
what
makes
your
community
unique?
imagine
describing
your
community
to
someone
who
wants
to
move
to
your
community..
Does
your
neighborhood
share
certain
celebrations
or
traditions??
Are
there
important
places
where
your
community
gathers
and
what
is
the
history
of
your
of
how
your
community
came
together??
A
A
A
A
Decisions
made
by
elected
officials?.
Another
thing
to
think
about
is
including
statistics
and
data
to
support
your
testimony..
You
can
include
data
on
education
levels,
graduation,
rates.,
median
household
income.,
poverty,
levels.,
access
to
technology.,
home
ownership,
rates.
language,
isolation.,
voter
registration
and
so
much
more..
This
information
can
be
gathered
from
the
u.s.
census,
bureau,
universities,
local
government
reports
and
other
areas.
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
A
Submissions
can
be
available
in
the
coming
month..
Two
types
of
expected
input
are
communities
of
interest
maps
that
will
begin
in
august
all
the
way
through
the
end
of
the
process
and
district
plans
based
on
2020
data..
This
is
based
on
the
release
of
the
data
which
should
be
coming
in
the
next
couple
weeks
and
all
the
way
through
the
final
adoption.
A
A
A
A
A
A
Showed
up-
and
this
is
not
civic
to
your
district.-
these
are
not
limited
to
any
members
of
the
public
who
may
want
to
attend
outside
your
designated
district..
If
you
feel
like
you,
missed
any
information
or
want
to
bring
some
friends,
there
will
be
another
chance
today
to
participate.
at
2:00
p.m.
B
A
A
And
you
can
scroll
down.
it'll,
give
you
some
background
information
and
when
you
scroll
down
a
little
more
you'll,
see
the
links
to
click
right
here
on
where
to
start
drawing
your
maps..
But
if
you
scroll
down
a
little
further
there's
a
public
gallery
where
all
those
who
have
drawn
their
own
maps
will.

A
A
Saved
this
will
pop
up
and
you
can
select
share
now
and
it
will
go
to
the
gallery
or
you
can
select
work
in
progress
and
come
back
to
it.
Later.
it's
super
important.
I
you
name
your
plan,
you
can
name
it
as
your
neighborhood
name
or
you
can
add
your
own
name,
whatever
you're
more
comfortable
with,
and
it's
important
also
that
you
save
this..
You
are
all
up
here.
If
you
want
to
come
back
to
it
later
or
if
you
want
to.
A
C
C
We
are
focused
on
advancing
civic
participation
and
civil
rights
within
the
filipino
american
and
broader
communities..
Our
community
lives
within
san
jose
city,
council
districts,
three,,
four,,
five
and
eight
connected
together
by
small
businesses,
parks,
community
organizations,
churches
and
schools..
We
ask
you,
keep
our
community
together
when
lines
are
redrawn..
Fifty
years
ago,
japan
town
used
to
have
a
large
filipino
american
population..
It
was
large
enough
to
establish
a
pinoy
town
in
the
area
with
film
businesses
such
as
grocery
stores
and
community
spaces,
like
the
philippine
community
center
that
is
still
on
north
6th
street..
C
however,.
Our
community
has
started
pinoy
town
tours
to
revive
and
sustain
the
historical
knowledge
of
the
area..
There
are
filipino
american
youth,
ranging
from
middle
school
to
high
school
students,
who
gather
as
the
filipino
youth
coalition
at
the
northside
community
center
on
north
6th
street..
It
is
also
a
center
for
seniors
and
veterans
of
our
community..
The
cathedral.
