Description
2021 Mayor's Awards for Excellence in the Arts
A
A
A
If
you've
seen
carlos
he's
either
a
musician
or
a
comedian,
and
so
each
of
them
need
to
be
vaccinated
absolutely.
But
tonight
we
have
the
great
honor
of
recognizing
some
truly
gifted
people
in
our
community
people
who,
as
you
said,
either
make
art
help
art
get
made,
keep
traditions
alive,
celebrate
the
heart
and
soul
of
our
community,
and
I
thought
we
would
kick
it
off
with
a
very
special
award.
A
This
is
the
melissa,
angstrom
youth
artist
award
and
it
goes
to
an
artist
who's
21
or
under
who
has
demonstrated
artistic
excellence
and
commitment
to
the
arts.
Someone
who
can
do
exceptional
work
at
an
exceptionally
young
age
and
carlos
tonight
we
have
someone
who
truly
deserves
this
honor
with
so
much
talent
and
so
much
versatility.
B
That's
for
sure,
mr
mayor
and
claro
casey,
you
know
it's
it's
my
honor
to
recognize
the
hard
work
and
dedication
of
theo
kutzko
who's,
a
junior
studying
theater
at
new
mexico
school
for
the
arts.
Theo
is
a
vocalist.
He
plays
a
piano,
he's
an
feels,
an
actor,
a
theater
technician
and
visual
artist
in
2020
theo
was
a
finalist
at
broadwaycon,
start
to
beat
competition
in
new
york
city
and
was
the
youngest
performer
at
the
all
things.
B
C
D
D
I
guess
at
my
age,
like
they
either
don't
know
at
all,
or
they
have
like
a
set
plan
of
like
stuff
that
they
want
to
do
and
with
me
I
just
kind
of
this
might
sound
kind
of
bad,
but,
like
I
don't
really
care
what
happens,
because
I'm
doing
my
art
I'm
doing
what
I
enjoy
and
stuff
just
comes
from
that
and
that
that's
how
I've
like
gotten
jobs.
That's
how
I've
learned
music
written
music!
D
D
My
brain's,
like
you,
want
to
play
paint
a
realism
painting
today
with
some
little
chaotic
elements
in
it,
and
then
I
go
and
do
that
I
feel
like
for
the
future.
It's
going
to
be
kind
of
like
that.
All
the
you
know,
colleges
and
stuff
is
coming
up
for
me
I'll
look
at
these
colleges
and
I'll
be
like
well,
which
one
do
I
like,
which
one
do
I
really
feel
is
the
best
for
my
kind
of
creative
process.
D
A
Thank
you
for
dessert.
Oh
thank
you
for
a
beautiful
self
realization,
video
describing
all
the
different
ways
that
theo
makes
art,
creates
art,
explores
art
the
freedom
to
just
try
new
things
go
wherever
your
creativity
takes.
You
theo
has
an
unlimited
future
and
santa
fe
is
so
fortunate
that
theo
is
part
of
our
community
perfect
way
to
kick
off
tonight's
award
ceremony.
B
A
Very
good
and
and
congratulations
to
all
of
the
folks
who
have
helped
theo
this
far,
there's
a
road
ahead
with
great
things
in
store.
B
I
felt
the
same
way
he
theo
felt
when
I
was
in
school.
I
thought.
A
B
E
A
Can
do
my
art
I
can
make
it
through
this.
That's
right,
art
seemed
to
be
so.
Let's
talk
next
about
the
arts
award,
carlos,
the
arts
award
recognizes
an
artist
or
an
organization,
doing
exceptional
work
in
film
in
literary
representation
in
new
media
in
performing
and
visual
arts,
and
this
year
it
is
a
great
honor
to
award
the
arts
award
to
the
lightning
boy
foundation.
B
What
a
great
organization
mr
mayor,
we're
recognizing
tonight,
the
lightning
boy
foundation
was
founded
in
memory
in
honor
of
valentino
bueno,
tigo
bueno
rivera
a
hooped
answer
from
pueblo
who
passed
away
at
the
age
of
eight
in
2016..
B
This
recognition
is
near
and
dear
to
my
heart,
because
his
grandparents
are
are
big
supporters
of
of
my
art
and
I've
had
the
opportunity
to
become
friends
with
him
over
the
years
and
I'm
so
grateful
for
the
shirt.
You
gave
me
that
that
honors,
your
your
grandson's
art
and
the
foundation's
mission
supports
a
tribally,
tribally,
inclusive,
lightning,
boy,
hoop
dance
group
and
other
youth
performances
and
visual
arts
objectives
and,
above
all,
trying
to
love
others
and
our
place
on
earth
unconditionally.
F
He
was
asked
what
he
wanted
to
be
remembered
by,
and
he
said
it
was
his
dancing
so
when
he
passed
away
that
gave
us
a
clear
direction
of
how
to
honor
him
and,
at
the
end
of
the
day,
how
to
heal
our
broken
hearts
about
losing
him,
and
that
was
to
create
the
foundation
and
make
the
opportunities
that
valentino
had
growing
up
in
pojoaque
pueblo,
available
to
all
the
kids
in
northern
new
mexico,
specifically
tribal
children.
G
Mission
of
the
lightning
boy
foundation
is
to
empower
our
native
youth
through
cultural
art,
song
and
dance,
and
in
particular,
one
of
the
vehicles
that
we
empower.
Our
youth
is
through
the
native
american
hoop
dance,
which
is
a
a
historical
dance
that
originated
here
in
the
pueblos
of
northern
new
mexico.
F
We
do
we
not
only
do
the
native
american
hook
dance.
Sometimes
we
offer
hip
hop
so
then
we
can
broaden
ours
our
reach
with
non-tribal
kids.
I
just
would
like
to
thank
all
the
support
that
we
get
from
the
not
only
in
santa
fe
in
new
mexico,
but
pretty
much
nationwide
and
worldwide.
F
F
B
That
was
beautiful.
It
was
32
youths
involved
in
in
the
in
the
program.
What
what
a
way
to
to
reach
out
to
to
our
youth
and
to
our
community,
and
I
can
only
imagine
the
the
empowering
that's
gonna,
come
from
from
that
way
to
go
what
a
what
an
honor
it
really
it's
near
and
dear
to
me,
because
I
I've
met
his
grandparents
and
I'm
so
happy
that
they
received
this
award.
A
I
remember
a
couple
years
ago
this
is
all
pre-coveted.
When
there
was
a
fundraiser
up
at
la
fonda
for
the
foundation,
I
went
up
to
watch
some
of
the
dancing
got
myself
a
ball
cap
with
the
lightning
boy
logo
on
it
it.
It
really
is
an
inspiring
organization,
and
it
is
so
true
to
santa
fe
and
to
northern
new
mexico.
So
we're
very
grateful
to
everybody.
B
B
A
B
We've
got
a
group,
it's
a
quartet
from
here
from
santa
fe
they're
called
and
they
share
music
from
their
childhood
memories,
with
songs
that
honor
our
ancestral
roots,
and
I
got
to
see
the
the
video
earlier,
and
so
these
are
all
some
really
good
friends
and
and
great
collaborators.
So
let's
go
ahead
and
let's
take
it
away
with
raises.
I
E
C
J
J
J
J
J
J
F
C
C
C
C
B
E
A
Tonight,
thanks
to
gastro
cafe,
but
also,
I
have
to
say,
college,
there
was
an
instrument
missing
from
that
presentation.
I
thought
I
was
waiting
for
you
to
come
walking
on
with
your
your
your
squeeze
box
to
be
part
of
the
show.
When
does
that.
B
Happen
well
hopefully,
next
time
it
would
have
been
my
honor
for
sure,
but
absolutely
great
great
performance,
and
thank
you
for
for
making
our
intermission.
A
Beautiful
beautiful,
beautiful
and
fitting
to
the
culture
that
was
great
and
and
truly
next
year,
we'll
do
it
in
person
and
there'll
be
live
music
there'll
be
live
dancing
we'll
have
a
another
celebration,
that's
right,
but
until
then
thank
you
for
that
beautiful
presentation
and
great
music,
great
sound
and
really
part
of
the
tradition
of
this
awards
ceremony.
B
B
From
humble
beginnings
to
becoming
one
of
the
top
annual
events
in
new
mexico-
and
I
think
one
of
the
coolest
things
about
the
santa
fe
independent
film
festival
is
that
it
extended
our
our
tourist
season
to
october,
and
you
know,
people
want
to
come
and
check
out
all
those
cool
movies,
and
it's
just
it's
a
great
thing.
You
know
I'm
I'm
so
happy
that
they
were
nominated
and
they
got
the
the
award.
And
now
we're
gonna
hear
a
little
bit
from
from
our
friend.
I
The
santa
fe
independent
film
festival
will
be
celebrating
its
13th
year,
this
october
13th
to
17th.
I
We
screen
over
a
hundred
films.
We've
had
wonderful
guests
like
jane
seymour,
jacqueline
bessette,
jenna,
rollins,
shirley,
maclaine,
george
r
martin,
as
well
as
tantu
cardinal
and
wes
studi.
I
I
As
an
artistic
endeavor,
the
santa
fe
independent
film
festival
welcomed
over
100
filmmakers
into
santa
fe,
as
well
as
over
10
000,
film
enthusiasts,
so
we've
really
grown
and
really
supported
film
through
all
its
stages
and
kind
of
created,
a
really
special
way
for
people
to
enjoy
that
communal
aspect
of
cinema.
I
I
am
grateful
for
this
opportunity
and
I
want
to
thank
all
of
our
our
advisory
board
members,
a
big
shout
out
to
gary
farmer
and
his
indigenous
film
program,
my
brother
artistic
director,
jacques
paisner
operations,
manager,
stephanie,
love,
submission
coordinator,
jenna
brazile,
and
all
the
wonderful
people
who
make
the
festival
possible
we're
looking
at
a
bright
future
for
movies
and
stuff,
and
I
also
want
to
thank
joanne
bowser
for
nominating
us
for
the
mayor's
award.
Without
you,
this
award
wouldn't
be
possible,
and
I
want
to
thank
our
audience
for
coming
out
to
the
movies.
A
A
And
we
not
only
have
people
making
films,
we've
got
people
writing
films,
we've
got
people
directing
producing
financing,
creating
and
doing
a
brilliant
job,
and
I
also
love
the
shout
out
to
joanne
balzer,
who
deserves
a
lot
of
credit
for
all.
She
does
to
hear
her
brought
into
the
conversation
is
very
heartwarming
thanks
for
for
the
nomination
it
it
doesn't
work.
If
you
don't
nominate
people,
you
can't
can't
win
if
you
don't
play
right,
so
it's
important
for
sure.
A
Well,
let's
now
talk
about
our
next
award
and
this
one
is
again
a
very
important
one,
because
it's
the
culture
connect
award
and
it
recognizes
an
artist
or
an
organization
who
engages
in
working
with
underserved
communities
through
equity,
inclusion
and
accessibility
lenses,
and
it
is
a
part
of
the
culture
connect
tradition
that
says
culture
is
everywhere.
Culture
is
not
just
art,
it's
how
we
live.
It's
how
we
talk
to
each
other,
it's
how
we
respect
each
other.
B
B
Israel
is
an
artist,
a
poet,
a
mentor,
a
muralist
gardener,
he's
community
and
inspired
by
the
abundance
that
surrounds
him
he's
also
currently,
the
co-founding
member
and
artist
director
of
alas,
the
awa
art
collective,
where
he
works
in
community
to
create
opportunities
for
black
indigenous
people
of
color
and
lgbtqia
artists,
hermano
you're
doing
a
great
job,
god,
god
continue
to
bless
you
in
in
everything,
you're
doing
and
hey.
Let's
hear
a
little
bit
from.
K
So
we're
really
excited
about
being
able
to
continue
to
be
an
arts
collective
in
the
on
the
south
side,
but
really
proud
of
all
the
different
members,
both
locally
and
aren't
from
here
that
have
been
able
to
not
only
bring
art
but
bring
different
parts
to
the
community.
We'd
like
to
thank
savannah
jones.
For
nominating
us,
I
didn't
realize
she
had
nominated
us.
I
guess
other
folks
have
nominated
us
too.
So
we're
really
grateful
to
them
and
just
really
grateful
to
all
the
artists
here
who
have
been
doing
the
work,
jessica,
ortiz.
K
So
many
other
people
chennai.
My
wife
is
about
ruby
and
so
many
other
collective
members,
yvonne
from
the
one
and
that
have
been
really
through
the
beginning.
Through
now-
and
I
know
I
can't
mention
all
of
them
until
there's
so
many,
but
we're
really
grateful
to
them
and
to
everybody
here
at
the
city
that
made
this
happen.
A
Shows
you
how
culture
really
does
connect?
You
start
with
the
mural
project
and
it
turns
into
feeding
people,
farming,
farming
and
all
of
the
the
folks
who
get
involved
in
one
way
or
another
art
is
life.
Life
is
art.
Culture
connects
us
all.
A
That's
a
beautiful
award
and
it
is
so
well
well
deserved,
and
I
think
carlos
and
I
are
both
very
delighted
that
this
year,
israel
and
the
collective
were
able
to
be
recognized
for
all
they
do
across
our
community.
B
I
I
love
that
they
have
a
south
side.
A
South
side
is
deep
in
our
hearts
and
all
parts
of
santa
fe
matter
and
all
parts
are
connected
through
the
arts.
So
now
our
next
award
tonight's
final
award.
A
This
is
the
philanthropy
award
and
it
recognizes
an
individual
or
an
organization
whose
charitable
work
advances
the
arts
and
culture,
and
this
year
the
award
goes
not
to
one
individual
but
two
extremely
generous
contributors
to
our
local
art
and
culture
community.
They
do
so
much
for
santa
fe
for
arts
across
the
board.
They
contribute
time,
energy,
their
spirit,
their
heart.
A
B
Mr
sloane,
sir,
I
mean
mr
wallerstein
served
as
board
chair
of
site
santa
fe
for
eight
years
and
he
continues
to
be
active
as
a
board
member.
He
led
the
12.5
million
dollar
capital
campaign
for
sites
new
building
and
and
grow
sites.
Santa
fe's
endowment
to
10
million
dollars
also
currently
serving
on
the
board
of
the
radius
books.
A
santa
fe
nonprofit
arts
organization
that
publishes
and
distributes
books
to
schools
and
libraries,
lasagnera
sloan
serves
as
a
board
member
at
the
new
mexico
school
for
the
arts
and
hey.
Let's
hear
from
from
andrew
and.
C
H
It's
always
been
a
great
source
of
pride
here
in
santa
fe.
There
are
many
cultures
coming
together.
You
know
past
and
present
and
records
our
rich
history
that
we
share.
H
L
H
H
Bringing
us
together,
particularly
we'd,
like
to
thank
anne
wrinkle,
who
I
worked
with
at
site
for
many
years,
and
paul
holton
who's
been
a
great
supporter
of
the
arts
who
nominated
us
and
thanks
for
your
kindness
and
to
the
many
organizations
that
we're
involved
in
santa
fe
new
mexico
school
for
the
arts,
radius,
books,
vital
spaces,
the
mexican
museum
foundation
on
and
on
and
on
you
know,
all
work
so
hard
to
contribute
so
much
to
young
and
old
in
this
community.
That
brings
us
together.
C
A
And
for
everything
else-
and
I
was
reading
some
of
the
chat
room
conversations
of
course,
mary's
a
great
photographer.
A
All
of
the
comments
that
are
coming
through
from
those
of
you
who
are
watching
this
program
and
sending
out
your
love
and
appreciation
to
all
of
our
winners
tonight,
andy
and
mary,
as
our
philanthropy
winners,
do
so
much
in
ways
that
are
large
and
small,
invisible
in
some
cases
and
very
visible
in
the
case
of
site
building,
but
across
the
board
the
winners
tonight,
the
people
who
we've
been
able
to
recognize
tonight.
They
all
deserve
it.
They
all
do
great
work
and
the
truth
is
we
had
so
many
other
good
nominations.
A
We
could
do
this
all
night
and
not
run
out
of
people
to
recognize
for
all
they
do
for
our
community
for
our
city,
I
loved
it
when
andy
said
art
heals,
because,
as
we
come
out
of
covid,
we
want
to
heal.
We
want
to
come
together,
we
want
to
celebrate
santa
fe
and
what
better
way
to
do
that
do
that
celebration
with
than
with
art
and
culture
and
the
people
who
make
it
happen
right
here
in
our
hometown.
B
And
in
this
recognition
you
know
I'm
looking
forward
to
to
all
the
art
that
music
or
visual
art
whatever
it
is,
that
is
going
to
come
out
after
being
shut
in
for
for
a
year
and
in
in
months.
I
I
know
for
myself
like
as
a
songwriter,
I
I
wrote
a
lot,
so
I
can
only
imagine
what
these
super
talented
artists
have
in
store
for
us.
After
a
year
of
being
working.
A
We're
going
to
have
a
blossoming
experience
ahead
of
us
with
celebration:
music,
dance,
painting,
poetry,
photography,
opera,
you
name
it.
Food
culture.
A
Will
be
on
display
with
a
flowering,
unlike
anything
we've
seen,
so
I'm
looking
forward
to
that,
but
also
looking
forward
to
the
celebration.
That
is
tonight's
celebration,
where
we
get
to
say.
Congratulations
to
so
many
people
who
make
such
a
difference
in
our
community
and-
and
I
want
to
now
just
in
addition
to
saying
one
more
time-
a
round
of
applause
and
thank
you
to
the
people
who
we
recognize.
Thank
you
and
to
our
music
intermission,
which
won
the
carlos
medina
good
housekeeping
approval.
A
That's
for
that
for
song
and
music
and
dance
and
celebration
and
the
food
we
got
to
eat
as
part.
A
A
C
M
The
winners
that
was
incredible
what
a
great
group-
and
I
just
want
to
say
thank
you
from
the
path
of
the
arts.
Commission.
The
arts
commission
is
a
all-volunteer
appointed
group
that
advises
the
arts
and
culture
department
and
advises
the
mayor
on
everything
to
do
with
visual
and
performing
arts
in
santa
fe.
We
help
determine
some
grants
for
our
great
non-profits
around
the
city
and
we
act
as
bridges
to
the
community
at
large.
M
We
have
such
an
incredible
arts
community,
one
of
the
best
one
of
the
greatest
honors
we
have
as
a
commission,
is
to
help
determine
the
awardees
for
this
evening,
and
we,
I
just
think
it
was
such
an
incredible
group,
of
course,
the
nominee
we
had
so
many
nominations.
M
It
was
almost
overwhelming,
but
we're
just
so
proud
of
this
particular
group.
So
bravo
to
this
to
these
winners,
the
arts
commission
is
an
incredibly
diverse
group
of
people.
I
want
to
thank
them
personally
for
all
their
hard
work,
especially
during
this
tough
year.
M
So
just
take
a
quick
second,
and
just
personally
thank
our
vice
chair,
adele
monasco,
our
chair
of
art
and
public
places,
andrea
hanley,
jorge
bernal
david
scheinbaum,
alma
castro,
who
you've
heard
about
a
few
times
tonight,
tamara
bates
and
then
a
special
thank
you
to
two
commissioners,
exilda
trujillo
de
martinez
and
bernadette
ortiz
pena,
who
were
on
this
selection
committee
to
give
some
finalist
nominations
to
the
mayor
for
his
choice.
So
thank
you
all
for
all
your
hard
work.
It's
an
honor
to
serve
with
all
of
you.

A
I
thought
pauline
was
going
to
congratulate
her
agent
for
getting
her
this
award,
but
it
turned
out
it
was
her
staff
good
call
pauline,
it's
the
folks
who
actually
make
it
happen
that
we
should
all
be
saying.
Thank
you
to
you're,
absolutely
right
and
the
team
that
makes
this
award
ceremony.
Work
are
the
folks
who
are
putting
on
the
program
creating
the
connection
making
the
technology
work,
bringing
us
some
flowers,
so
we've
got
some
pretty
color
in
our
very
expensive
set
here
that
was
created
in
the
convention
center.
Well,
that
about
wraps
it
up.
A
B
B
Our
friendship-
I
was
just
sitting
here
thinking
four
or
five
years
ago,
we
met
at
a
coffee
shop.
We
did
thanks
to
our
good
friend,
vince.
A
There
is
so
much
social
glue
for
sure
culture
connect
and
we're
an
example
of
culture
connecting
and
once
the
connection
is
made
in
santa
fe,
it's
a
life
connection
and
it's
a
heartfelt
connection
and
it's
a
spiritual
connection
and
that's
what
makes
santa
fe
tick
to
everybody
who
watched
tonight,
everybody
who
was
an
award
winner
to
our
music
intermission,
beautiful
job
to
everybody
whose
video
spoke
from
the
heart,
we're
so
honored
to
have
you
in
our
community
and
to
be
able
to
recognize
you
tonight
for
all
you
give
our
community.
We
give
you
our
thanks.
A
You
make
santa
fe
the
arts
and
culture
capital
of
america,
perhaps
the
whole
world.
This
is
a
community
that
lives
and
breathes
art.
Culture
tradition
it
is
who
we
are.
It
is
what
makes
santa
fe
so
special
and
tonight
is
just
one
example
of
the
diversity,
the
strength,
the
courage,
the
compassion,
the
love
that
beats
in
the
heart
of
santa
fe.
So
to
everybody.
