Megan
fuller
is
a
program
manager
for
the
pediatric
residency
training
program
at
ucla
mattel's
children's
hospital.
In
los
angeles.
She
received
her
bachelor's
in
psychology
from
westmont
college
and
her
master's
in
counseling
from
clu
megan's
experience
in
working
with
students
in
grades
k-12
and
higher
education
for
the
last
10
years
provides
her
with
a
strong
framework
for
supporting
and
guiding
students
as
they
navigate
their
educational
careers.
H
I
was
hope
I
helped
out
with
the
youth
commission
when
I
myself
was
in
high
school,
so
it's
exciting
to
be
back,
so
I
was
asked
to
come
tonight
to
speak
to
you
about
the
college
admissions
process
and
I'm
sure
many
of
you
are
knee-deep
in
that
process.
Right
now.
So
my
talk
tonight
is
really
just
to
give
you
some
10
things
that
I
wish
I
knew
when
I
was
applying
to
college.
H
So
I
went
to
thousand
oaks
high
school,
so
go
lancers
and
then
after
1000x
high
school
I
went
to
westmont
and
studied
psychology
and
then
after
I
graduated
from
westmont
in
2015,
I
came
back
to
thousand
oaks
and
did
my
master's
at
clu
just
down
the
street,
and
I
so
I
have
a
masters
of
science
and
counseling
and
a
people,
personnel
services
credential
just
full
disclosure.
H
I
do
work
at
ucla
for
the
david
geffen
school
of
medicine,
but
ucla's
views
are
not
represented
here
tonight
and
in
my
free
time
I
am
an
educational
consultant,
so
number
10,
so
I'll
go
through
10
things.
Number
10
is
plan
ahead
and
keep
track
of
deadlines,
and
if
you
don't
currently
own
a
calendar,
get
one,
but
I'm
sure
many
of
you
have
one
or
use
your
phone
between
the
application
process
and
the
deadlines
and
the
scholarships
that
you'll
you
know
be
looking
at
it.
H
The
deadlines
kind
of
pile
up,
so
it's
easy
to
lose
track
of
things,
especially
if
you're
doing
early
action
early
decision.
So
my
number
10
item
is
keep
track
of
your
deadlines.
H
Number
nine
is
be
thoughtful
about
your
list
of
schools.
So
I,
when
I
was
applying
to
college,
didn't
do
this.
I
applied
to
about
six
schools,
and
now
I
would
call
them
all
reach
schools.
I
couldn't
have
gotten
into
any
of
them,
but
I
was
very
aspirational
and
looking
back,
I
wish
I
had
done
it
a
little
bit
differently.
So
my
advice
to
you
is
to
have
between
eight
to
ten
schools
is
a
good,
realistic
number
and
your
first
couple
set
up.
H
You
just
have
like
three
tiers,
so
your
first
tier
is
really
kind
of
your
safety
schools.
I
would
encourage
you
to
use
naviance
niche,
whatever
kind
of
college
board
tools
that
you
can
use
now
to
kind
of
plug
in
your
data
and
your
numbers,
and
they
put
you
on
a
map
as
to
kind
of
where
you
fall
based
on
other
people
who
have
been
accepted
to
that
school.
H
So
you
know
those
are
your
safety
schools,
that's
the
first
tier.
The
second
tier
is
the
kind
of
middle
of
the
road
schools
you
may
or
may
not
get
in
you're,
not
really
sure,
but
there's
a
good
chance.
You
could
but
there's
also
a
chance
that
you
couldn't.
So
that's
your
second
tier
and
your
third
tier
is
your
aspirational.
Schools
doesn't
mean
you
won't
get
in,
but
there
is
a
higher
chance
that
you
won't,
but
you
should
still
strive
and
have
those
be
your
aspirational
dream
schools.
H
If
you
have
kind
of
three
buckets,
it
relieves
some
of
the
anxiety
we're
not
all
going
to
go
to
harvard
or
stanford
or
those
ivy
league
schools.
But
if
that's
one
of
the
schools
on
your
list
then
certainly
apply
for
it,
but
also
be
realistic
about
some
of
the
schools
that
you're
applying
to
so
number.
Eight
is
your
test.
Scores,
aren't
everything,
and
just
in
small
at
the
bottom
I
have,
but
they
are
something.
H
So
you
know
we
focus
a
lot
on
our
sat
and
our
act
and
the
scores
and
we
have
sometimes
we
let
them
define
us,
but
your
scores
are
not
going
to
define
you
and
schools.
Now
are
looking
more
at
kind
of
you
as
the
whole
person,
rather
than
just
your
sat
or
your
act
score.
So
take
the
test.
Do
your
best
do
your
best
and
move
on?
Don't
let
it
define
you
or
dwell
on
it.
H
Schools
are
kind
of
moving
away
from
that
now,
so
you
know,
if
you
don't
have
the
sat
or
the
act
score
that
you
wanted.
That's
okay,.
H
So
number
seven
is
you:
don't
have
to
have
had
a
life
altering
event
to
get
into
college,
and
I
say
this
because
a
lot
of
the
prompts
that
you'll
see
when
you're
doing
your
personal
statement
or
your
essays
or
supplemental
questions
will
make.
You
feel
like
if
you
haven't
gone
through
something
tragic
or
monumental.
Yet
then
you're
not
going
to
college
and
that's
not
the
case
you're
only
16,
17,
18
years
old
and
if
you
haven't
had
a
tragic
event
happen
to
you.
H
I'd
say
that
you're
doing
pretty
well
so
there's
two
parts
to
this
one
is
that
is
part
of
your
essay.
So
I'll
go
into
my
second
part,
which
is
have
three
to
five
people.
Read
your
essay
and
I
say
that
because
I
think
sometimes
we
take
our
personal
statement
and
our
essay
and
our
supplemental
questions
as
very
personal
and
and
they
should
be,
but
I
would
encourage
you
to
share
them
with
people
that
you
trust
for
a
number
of
reasons.
H
One
just
grammar:
we
make
mistakes
and
that's
okay,
you're
a
human
being,
but
you
don't
want
to
have
simple
grammar
mistakes
when
you're
submitting
it
officially.
H
H
H
What
I
like
to
encourage
students
is,
you
are
applying
to
the
school
and,
yes,
you
are
going
to
pay
them
tuition
and
you
are
going
to
be
a
student
and
you
will
attend,
however,
that
school
is
investing
a
lot
of
time.
Money,
energy
resources
in
you.
So
why
should
they
accept
you
and
what
are
you
going
to
offer
them
by
going
to
their
school?
When
you
graduate
from
that
school,
you
will
have
that
name
on
your
diploma
on
your
business
cards
on
your
linkedin.
H
Number
five
is
visit
the
college
and
career
center
on
your
campus.
If
you
don't
know
where
it
is,
you
should
find
it
tomorrow
when
you
go
to
school,
the
college
and
career
center
on
your
campus.
I
just
have
a
few
up
here,
so
newberry
park,
high
school
thousand
oaks,
high
school
and
west
lake
high
school.
H
They
all
have
college
and
career
centers
on
their
campus.
I
have
worked
with
connie
peters
in
thousand
oaks,
high
school
and
she's
really
great,
and
she
has
tons
of
resources.
So
if
you
haven't
had
a
chance
to
go
by
your
college
and
career
center,
I
would
encourage
you
to
do
so.
They
have
resources
for
scholarships
and
schools
that
are
out
there.
If
you
haven't
looked
at
schools
yet
and
they
could
be
two-year
schools,
four-year
schools,
military,
whatever
you're
kind
of
pursuing
she
has
all
sorts
of
resources.
H
So
it's
great
to
kind
of
go
there,
and
even
if
you
just
show
up
and
say
like,
I
don't
really
know
why
I'm
here,
but
I
have
a
lot
of
questions.
That's
okay,
that's
their
job.
They
can
help
you
do
that.
H
My
fourth
tip
is
to
take
advantage
of
campus
tours.
So,
if
it's
possible,
I
know
if
you're
looking
at
schools
out
of
state
or
looking
at
schools
close
by
that's
great,
but
if
you
are
able
to
go
to
a
campus
tour,
even
if
it's
just
one
or
two
there's
something
that
happens
when
you
step
onto
a
college
campus
and
it's
important
to
know
what
you're
looking
for.
So
I
didn't
know
that
I
didn't
like
big
campuses.
H
I
wanted
a
small
campus
and
I
didn't
know
that
until
I
showed
up
to
one,
I
also
took
into
consideration
the
type
of
learner
that
I
was
so
if
you
don't
think
you're
going
to
be
successful
sitting
in
a
lecture
hall
with
a
thousand
people
learning
about
biology,
then
I
wouldn't
recommend
a
large
school.
But
if
you're
the
type
of
learner
that
needs
one-on-one
attention
and
you
kind
of
value
relationships
with
your
professors,
then
I
would
encourage
you
to
look
at
smaller
schools
or
look
at
the
structure
of
how
their
curriculum
is
set
up.
H
And
there
are
many
years
that
what
happens
is
students
don't
apply
for
the
scholarships
and
the
money
goes
unused.
So
if
you
don't
go
to
the
college
and
career
center
and
ask
about
it,
then
there's
an
opportunity
you
might
be
missing
out
on
and
a
hundred
dollars,
even
if
it's
a
small
scholarship
pays
for
a
textbook.
So
I
would
encourage
you
whether
it's
a
big
or
small
scholarship.
The
local
scholarships
are
the
way
to
go.
H
H
That
was
not
the
case,
so
college
is
just
the
beginning,
or
you
know
the
two-year
school
or
military
or
whatever
it
is
that
you're
pursuing,
and
I
would
just
encourage
you
to
keep
that
in
mind
and
know
that
this
is
a
journey
and
a
process
and
part
of
being
a
student
that
I
would
encourage.
You
is
to
be
a
student
for
the
rest
of
your
life
and
be
a
lifelong
learner,
and
college
is
just
one
stepping
stone
in
that.
H
So
this
is
a
big
next
step
for
many
of
you
and
it's
exciting,
but
remember
that
it's
exciting
when
you
get
overwhelmed
and
kind
of
lean
on
your
friends
and
your
family
when
you
are
overwhelmed,
because
it's
not
something
that
you
have
to
do
by
yourself.
So
and
if
you
have
any
questions,
let
me
know
that's
my
email.
If
you
have
specific
questions
that
you
want
to
reach
out
to
me
about,
and
I
left
some
cards
by
the
door
so,
but
if
you
have
any
other
questions,
I'm
happy
to
answer
them.
H
I
H
So
some
scholarships
are
merit-based,
so
you
might
apply
to
a
school
and
not
even
know
that
you've
been
considered
for
a
scholarship.
So,
for
example,
when
I
applied
to
westmont
I
got
in
and
when
I
got
in,
I
got
a
letter
that
said,
oh
by
the
way,
we're
giving
you
a
scholarship.
I
didn't
apply
for
it.
It
was
just
given
to
me
based
on
merit
and
my
grades,
so
that's
kind
of
one
scholarship
that
happens,
which
is
always
nice
because
you
didn't
have
to
really
do
anything
for
it.
H
Does
this
but
college
admissions
counselors
come
to
the
local
high
schools
and
if
you
haven't
already
gone
to
one
of
their
presentations,
I
would
encourage
you
to
go
because
those
are
the
people
looking
at
your
application
and
they
just
put
a
name
to
your
face
and
shook
your
hand
if
they
don't
do
that,
you're,
just
an
email
in
their
inbox
or
a
piece
of
paper
on
their
desk.
So
if
you're
able
to
go
and
meet
them
in
person,
they'll
be
able
to
tell
you
about
the
scholarship
opportunity
that
they
have
at
their
their
specific
school.
H
H
That's
that
that's
the
simple
answer.
I
went
through
a
lot
of
different
pathways
to
kind
of
figure
out
what
I
wanted
and
I
still
haven't
quite
figured
it
out,
but
I
so
I
thought
I
wanted
to
be
a
teacher
and
a
thousand
oaks
high
school
and
I
think
at
some
of
the
other
local
high
schools.
They
have
a
majors
program
where
you
can
kind
of
explore
certain
careers.
H
I
thought
I
wanted
to
be
a
teacher
and
then
I
thought
I
wanted
to
be
an
occupational
therapist
and
then
I
thought
I
wanted
to
be
a
school,
psych
and
kind
of
went
through
all
these
things
and
I
shadowed
a
lot
of
people
literally
just
like
asked
people
if
I
could
come
like,
hang
out
with
them
for
a
day.
So
I
would
encourage
that.
H
I
took
people
to
coffee
and
just
like
asked
them
kind
of
what
their
day
looked
like
and
if
it
sounded
interesting,
then
I
kept
going
and
if
it
sounded
awful,
then
I
said
thanks
so
much
have
a
nice
day,
but
I
think
I
took
a
psych
101
class
in
my
freshman
year
of
college
and
I
really
enjoyed
it.
H
So
I
took
another
psych
class
and
I
really
liked
that
one
too
and
then
I
ended
up
pursuing
psych
and
I
actually-
and
I
would
encourage
you
to
do
this
if
it's
possible,
wherever
you
end
up
is
I
asked
if
I
could
tailor
my
curriculum
to
my
interests,
so
I
actually
took
psych
classes
and
then
all
my
elective
classes
were
education
classes
from
the
liberal
studies
program.
So
instead
of
taking
more
psych
classes
for
my
elective,
I
added
in
liberal
studies,
education
classes.
H
So
and
when
I
went
to
grad
school
I
felt
more
prepared
because
a
lot
of
the
information
I
had
was
kind
of
a
repeat
for
me
because
I
already
had
some
of
it.
So
that's
a
long
answer
to
your
question,
but
I
think
my
advice
would
be
just
to
be
open
to
the
op,
the
possibility
of
exploring
different
things
and,
if
you're
signing
up
for
classes
in
college,
sign
up
for
something
you've
never
heard
of
before
and
take
it
and
see.
If
you
like
it
because
you
might
end
up
liking
it
or
go
shadow.
Somebody.
H
That's
a
good
question.
I
think
it
kind
of
goes
back
to
what
I
was
saying
about.
Why
should
they
invest
in
you,
how
you
do
that
is
going
to
be
different
for
each
person
depending
on
the
school
and
what
the
school
is
offering
and
maybe
what
your
interests
are,
but
I
would
think
about
how
you
want
to
contribute
to
society
and
the
world.
That
sounds
very.
H
Like
beauty
pageant-ish,
you
know
I'm
in
a
world
peace,
but
how
is
having
their
name
on
your
attached
to
you
going
to
impact
them
and
you,
so
what
can
they
offer
you,
and
what
can
you
offer
them?
It's
kind
of
like
a
business
transaction
so
think
about
it.
That
way,.
H
No
oh
you're
in
eighth
grade
now
I
would
say,
as
an
eighth
grader
sorry,
I
thought
you
were
a
senior
in
high
school.
As
an
eighth
grader,
I
would
say:
do
some
exploration
on
your
next,
you
know
spring
break
or
winter
break
coming
up.
If
you
happen
to
be
driving
past
a
school
like
ask
your
parents,
if
you
can
get
out
and
walk
around
the
campus
and
see
if
you
like
it,
look
online
and
a
lot
of
schools
now
actually
for
students
who
can't
come
to
campus,
they
have
these
virtual
tours.
H
I
I
have
two
questions:
okay,
how
did
you
reach
out
to
people
to
know
how
to
job
shadow
or
like
how
do
you,
how
do
you
network
with
people
and
find
people
to
job
shadow
yeah,
and
also
when
do
you
do
you
start
applying
for
scholarships.
H
So
scholarship
I'll
go
backwards.
Scholarship
deadlines
vary,
which
is
why
I
would
encourage
you.
A
I'll
go
back
to
number
10,
have
a
calendar
with
your
your
deadlines
and
be
get
in
touch
with
your
college
and
career
center,
because
they'll
be
able
to
help
you
keep
track
of
those
deadlines,
but
also
give
you
a
sheet
of
all
the
deadlines,
especially
if
there
are
local
scholarships.
H
I
don't
really
know
what
that
means,
but
could
I
come
and
shadow
you
for
an
afternoon
like
I
usually
get
out
of
school
at
12.
Could
I
come
for
like
two
hours
and
shadow
you?
They
could
say
yes
or
no.
If
they
say
no
okay
then
move
on.
But
if
they
say
yes,
then
you
just
created
a
cool
opportunity
for
yourself
and
you
get
to
meet
cool
people
and
you'll
either.
H
So
I
want
to
pursue
that
further
and
you
can
do
that
so
any
opportunity
that
you're
meeting
people,
if
they
sound
like
they
have
an
interesting
career
or
a
job
or
component
of
their
life
that
you're
interested
in
just
ask
them
if
you
can
hang
out
with
them
for
an
afternoon
and
if,
if
their
job
doesn't
allow
you
to
hang
out
with
them,
some
jobs
are
have
a
confidentiality
component,
especially
like
doctors.
If
you
want
to
go
shout
out
a
doctor,
usually
that's
for
hipaa
reasons.
