From YouTube: State of the City - Infrastructure
Description
Director of Public Works, Randy Bennett speaks about how fiber and technology is improving the city of Waterloo.
A
Public
works
is
pretty
much
consistent
of
a
lot
of
your
essential
services,
whether
it
be
conversing
the
streets
through
town
going
through
traffic
signals
and
the
timing
for
what
it
takes.
The
signage
animal
control
if
you'd
have
animals
in
that
being
able
to
maintain
all
the
fleet
throughout
the
city,
along
with
waste
management
for
waste,
water
and
sanitation,
whether
it's
the
the
garbage
recycling
and
yard
waste
for
which
we
accrue
there.
A
So
when
it
comes
to
you
know
what
it
takes
to
be
a
leader
to
be
able
to
perform
in
a
lot
of
those
is
a
great
communicator.
You
know
a
lot
of
what
we
do
is
trying
to
make
a
difference
for
whether
it's
the
residents,
businesses
patrons
that
are
using
our
community.
A
You
know
a
lot
of
it
has
to
do
with
depend
on
what
your
goal
and
or
what
the
situation
is
at
a
time.
So
if
it's
just
you
know
being
able
to
be
an
excellent
communicator
working
effectively,
not
only
with
their
staff,
but
it
could
be
from
other
community
members,
the
public
citizens,
even
consultants
being
able
to
convey
what
you
need
and
try
to
stay
on
task.
A
Keep
it
positive
and
work
towards
the
goal
for
what
you're
trying
to
accomplish
when
it
comes
to
technology,
as
you
can
see,
there's
a
lot
of
software
that
we've
already
implemented
through
some
of
the
departments,
but
we
also
have
several
more
that
were
in
the
process
and
and
and
going
to
be
doing
this
year,
whether
it's
route,
wear
and
sanitation
and
or
elements.
That's
not
only
a
electronic
work
order
system.
A
That's
not
only
going
to
work
for
all
six
departments
in
public
works,
but
it's
also
uni
universal
to
where
engineering
planning,
zoning
and
other
departments
in
the
city
are
going
to
be
able
to
utilize
that
to
more
or
less
tie
us
all
together,
be
able
to
show
the
the
improvements
and
the
different
work
functions
that
are
being
done
in
the
different
departments
and
give
better
access
for
all
departments
to
be
able
to
get
that
information
along
with
requesting
whether
it
be
for
vehicle
repairs.
A
Everything
would
actually
have
a
start
to
finish
now,
because
it
all
would
be
utilized
through
one
software
when
it
comes
to
the
smart,
poles
and
the
technology
that
we're
working
on
the
traffic,
whether
it's
traffic
adaptive
as
we're
starting
to
to
expand
that
all
of
that
needs
to
be
tied
with
something.
And,
of
course,
that's
fiber.
A
The
different
software
that
we're
in
the
process
of
either
it
has
been
implemented
or
in
the
process
of
implementing
is,
is
going
to
work,
not
only
for
efficiency,
whether
it's
time
management
as
far
as
how
we're
running
routes,
efficiency.
As
far
as
electronic
work
orders
and
being
able
to
communicate
effectively,
not
only
within
the
departments
of
just
public
works
but
branching
out
to
other
departments
throughout
the
city
and
through
all
that
technology
is,
it
has
to
happen
through
fiber,
and
that's
also
another
project
that
we
have
underway.
