Beyond 1001 Dedicated Data Service Instances - Julian Fischer, anynines

The first on-demand provisioning service brokers have appeared on the radar. This talk inspires to use them at scale leading to new challenges. Provisioning thousands of dedicated service instances, a corresponding number of VMs or even clusters of VMs needs to be managed. Find out whether common practises from manual cluster operations and automation strategies suitable for managing a small number of service instances can still be applied. Striving for a full lifecycle automation, this talk gives insights about obstacles and strategies for deploying dedicated, clustered data services instances at a large scale. Questions such as how to manage thousands of service instance dedicated PostgreSQL or MongoDB clusters will be discussed, exemplarily. Join this talk and the mission to automatically manage the entire lifecycle of complex data services beyond 1001 service instances.

Building an IoT Cloud for the Healthcare Industry: How to Solve Networking, Security, and Multi-tenancy Challenges and Still Have Fault Tolerance and High Availability - Sergey Sverchkov, Altoros

Imagine yourself building an IoT healthcare cloud solution that securely connects to hundreds of private hospital networks and exchanges data with 100,000+ devices via WebSocket, TCP, and HTTP. In this scenario, even private networks routing can become a challenge. Now, add the requirements to encrypt and store customer data separately, run the pool of shared applications in Cloud Foundry for customer multi-tenancy, and integrate authentication with customer directory services. What you will get is a very complex project that must thoroughly address all aspects of building a shared and secure private cloud. In this talk, we will concentrate on the details of networking, security, and multi-tenancy implementations for an IoT cloud-based healthcare solution and reveal the architecture principles of device adapters that allow for seamless integration of new devices.

About Sergey Sverchkov
Sergey Sverchkov has over 15 years of experience in building complex software architectures, database development, and data migration. Since 1996, Sergey has created dozens of enterprise solutions for big data analysis and BI that utilize distributed frameworks (such as Hadoop) and are deployed in public and private cloud infrastructures, including Amazon, Joyent, Rackspace, OpenStack, etc. Sergey is a certified Oracle trainer and a frequent speaker at international IT conferences, e.g., JAX London.

CF Server-Less: CloudFoundry as a Platform for Server-less Computing - Nima Kaviani & Michael Maximilien, IBM

As CloudFoundry matures to become the de-facto platform for enterprise cloud computing, it is no surprise that various types of computing services need to be supported. Server-less computing is a new name for various previous concepts or technologies, e.g. functors, functional programming. In this model of computing, applications are written as a series of small functions with clear input and output and can be executed in the cloud on demand. The difference between this approach and eg. micro-services is that the backend part only executes when invoked. In this talk we compare and contrast possible approaches to make CF a first class platform for server-less computing. We explore retrofitting the current CF app push model, leverage open source server less platforms like OpenWhisk, and investigate how the CF runtime (Diego) could be improved to support server less apps as on-off tasks.

About Nima Kaviani
Nima Kaviani is a Cloud Engineer with IBM Cloud Labs and also a member of Cloud Foundry's Diego Team. Nima has a PhD in computer science, and has been working in the area of multi-cloud and hybrid cloud as part of his PhD work. He has also been the developer of Cloud Foundry BlueDocs, and has been actively writing about the experience of developing Cloud Foundry.

About Michael (aka dr.max) Maximilien
My name is Michael Maximilien, better known as max or dr.max, and I am a computer scientist with IBM. Catch Me If You Can – Leveraging Cloud Foundry, SDN, BOSH and Predictive Analytics to Outrun Advanced Persistent Threats (APT) While Maintaining Optimal Quality of Service (QoS) - Keith Strini, Merlin Glynn & Sean Keery, Pivotal

As we work to move the BOSH/Cloud Foundry ecosystem closer to an autonomous dynamic runtime architecture, it’s time to incorporate more layers of the OSI model into the fold to provide a more robust security posture and optimize performance. BOSH coupled with a properly architected SDN, can manage more complexity in its deployments such that each Cloud Foundry deployment can adapt in response to demands on the system, security policy, or degradation of network performance. By analyzing continuous feedback of key metrics and easily offloading these metrics to BOSH managed Big Data platforms, operators can now define Domain Specific Language (DSL) based strategies and pass them to BOSH to manage how to adapt the entire domain in response to changes in the health of the communications layers below it.

About Merlin Glynn
Merlin has been building complex environments for over 20 years {yeah he's an old guy}. While with IBM, he architected some of the worlds largest Supercomputers regularly being listed on the https://www.top500.org/. At VMware, he was the lead architect for VMware's global OneCloud. Now at Pivotal, he focuses on designing next generation Cloud Foundry platforms with Pivotal's key enterprise customers.

About Sean Keery
Sean Keery began hacking obscure video game systems at the age of 13. Sean then developed interpersonal skills while teaching snowboarding. Nowadays we've got Cloud Foundry, choreography, containers and plenty of io. Cluster deployments and IaaS independence occupy most days, while the daily commute is filled with podcasts and chipmunk bunny hops. Some family time, spicy food, a good book and hacking on the newest toy keep Sean busy at home.

About Keith Strini
Keith Strini is a Cloud Foundry Solutions Architect at Pivotal, implementing Cloud Foundry solutions across a wide variety of customer environments both in the Federal and Commercial space. He also served as a technology analyst for the US Department of Defense and Intelligence communities. In this capacity, he was responsible in aiding the enterprise management decision process and guiding the modernization migrations to cloud initiatives. In addition to this he provided strategic analysis to aide in the planning and investment projections necessary for this technology acquisition. He has helped architect, develop and execute the fielding of information systems across the Joint Services both CONUS and OCONUS (Korea, Japan, Europe, and the Middle East) and NATO.

Developing a Westy Tracking platform on Cloud Foundry - Rob Brinkman, JDriven

Experiencing Europe while traveling with our Volkswagen Camper (Westy) is one of the items on top of my bucket list. It would be great to offer friends and family the possibility to track our adventure in real-time and build up a history of the route we took and the places we visited. For that purpose I develop a real-time tracking platform using Vert.x, Redis and AngularJS and I equipped the Westy with an online GPS Tracker and deployed it to CloudFloundry. The realized platform uses Vert.x to handle events published by the tracker(s), stores the history in Redis and visualizes the real-time location and history an a map using AngularJS. This session will give insight in the modern (reactive) architecture style of the application and a hands on introduction to Vert.x., Redis and AngularJS deployed on Cloud Foundry.

Do More With Your Apps: Unleashing the Power of the V3 Cloud Controller API - Utako Ueda and Dan Wendorf, Pivotal

Some of the biggest problems developers have had with the Cloud Controller API have traditionally revolved around lifecycle management of their apps. The lack of features like version rollbacks, zero downtime deployment, running one-off tasks, simplified database migration, and running multiple processes per application have frustrated many developers.

The CAPI team is working on making all this and more possible with V3 of the cloud controller API. The new application modeling provides much more flexibility and control over the workflows available to you for application deployment, while maintaining backwards compatibility with the Cloud Foundry interface you use today.

Utako and Dan will explain how to take advantage of the V3 API, and get into the details of the strategies involved in ensuring both dependable backwards compatibility and exciting new resource modularity.

Docker and Cloud Foundry: The 3 Use Cases - Alexandre Vasseur, Pivotal

With Diego, Cloud Foundry is capable of deploying and running apps as Docker images. That is now easy to orchestrate, scale and manage in production those Docker containers up to the point that what you care is not Docker but the app itself. But there is more you can do to and explore combining Cloud Foundry with Docker!

- leveraging Docker service broker, possibly using Docker Swarm managed by BOSH to provide containers as a service with all the BOSH and service broker great capabilities
- leveraging Concourse and Docker based pipeline to ensure your run pipeline in isolation, using Concourse as BOSH release with garden-runC.

Those 3 uses cases are fully independent yet all use Cloud Foundry, BOSH and Docker to align to specific requirements. Come learn about those combined architectures, seem them in action thru live demos, and expand the possibilities with Cloud Foundry.

About Alexandre Vasseur
Alexandre Vasseur is in charge of Pivotal ‘ technical field engagements in France and South of Europe. He and his team are in charge of technical awareness and solution architecture for customers, prospects and partners in that region around Cloud Foundry and Pivotal solutions. This talk walks you through how Allstate architected and designed an integrated infrastructure designed for maximum resiliency. The design starts from datacenter placement to physical infrastructure isolation, network domain isolation, security zone isolation, and up to application architecture patterns. Allstate redesigned everything including the infrastructure supply chain to optimise infrastructure build and delivery.

In the end, Allstate has a multi-deployment solution that spans physical regions and availability zones that guarantee a 99.9% up time for applications.

How dorma+kaba Leverages and Deploys on CloudFoundry - Michael Erne, wölkli gmbh & Adriano Raiano, dorma+kaba

DORMA Group and Kaba Group, merged to form dorma+kaba in September 2015. The merger has created one of the top three companies in the global market for security and access solutions, with pro forma sales of more than CHF 2 billion and around 16,000 employees. dorma+kaba is active in over 50 countries and has a presence, through both production sites and distribution and service offices, in all relevant markets. In this presentation, you will take part of the journey of how dorma+kaba is leveraring Cloud Foundry for their access control as a service "exivo" and how they deploy on it.

Cloud Foundry makes it exceptionally simple to deploy and manage applications with simple commands like 'cf push'. However, as your application grows in complexity and the number of deployed components explodes it becomes difficult to keep an overview of the required services and bindings. Many organisations, like dorma+kaba, face these challenges sooner or later, especially with microservices architecture. Starting from the naive idea of automating deployments using shell scripts wrapping the Cloud Foundry cli, the pitfalls encountered with this approach, and the evolution towards sophisticated and reliable tooling. Finally dorma+kaba built their open framework to deploy 80+ applications through multiple deployment stages including production and open sourced it during the CF Summit

About Michael Erne
Michael Erne is the CEO at wölkli gmbh, a swiss-based consultancy focusing on cloud technologies such as Cloud Foundry. He supports the dorma+kaba group in their journey with Cloud Foundry. He is one of the maintainers of the open source deployment framework push2cloud.

How to Scale Single-Node Service Brokers with Subway - Justin Carter & Xiujiao Gao, Stark & Wayne

Using cf-containers broker (packaged in docker-boshrelease) is the fastest and easiest way to get as a service working with Cloud Foundry by leveraging the existing ecosystem of docker based services. It allows you to easliy start and stop docker containers via the Cloud Foundry services api. But bringing up multiple service instances on a single node can quickly lead to a shortage of resource (memory, cpu, disk).

In this presentation, Justin Carter and Xiujiao Gao will talk about Subway, which is a multiplexing service broker that allows you to scale out single-node brokers. They will demonstrate how to deploy Subway as a proxy to balance incoming requests to multiple backend brokers. This allows horizontal scaling of brokers such as cf-containers-broker that were previously confined to a single node. Subway is OSS project and has been deployed in GE Predix.

About Justin Carter
As a professional artist Justin Carter has performed as a musician and dancer in many prestigious festivals and venues. As a high stakes poker player he has faced former world champions. As a developer he has worked on algorithmic synthesizers, poker bots, game theoretical analysis tools and scheduling software for workforce management.
Currently he is a project lead at Stark & Wayne where he helps clients be successful in their adoption of Cloud Foundry and contributes to various projects in the Cloud Foundry open source ecosystem.

Keynote - A Team of Women are Already Leading the Olympic Transformation. Will Cloud be the Catalyst for Greater Diversity in IT? - Ursula Morgenstern, Global Head of Consulting & Systems Integration, Atos

Thanks to cloud, analytics and mobile technologies, the Olympics is being transformed into a global connected experience through a centralized cloud model. This transformation is being led by an outstanding team of senior women at Atos. Unfortunately, the diversity gap, in particular the gender balance, remains stronger in IT than in other industries.

Research is showing that diversity including gender diversity has a positive impact on corporate performance.

Will open and collaborative technologies such as cloud create the pull for women and minorities to – at last - extend their contribution to IT and, further, to enterprise innovation and performance?

Keynote: Anthropic Sympathy - How Cloud Foundry & Continuous Delivery Make Humans Happier and More Productive - Daniel Jones, CTO, EngineerBetter

Cloud Foundry and Continuous Delivery make it possible to exploit the findings of cognitive psychology and neuroscience to increase the productivity and happiness of our teams.

This session will answer:
• How can we improve willpower & decrease technical debt?
• Is the present bias real? How can we turn it to our advantage?
• Can you increase a team’s effective IQ?
• How do DevOps & Product Teams increase empathy, and what impact does empathy have on productivity?
• Why is Cloud Foundry vital to all of this?

“Mechanical sympathy” was popularized in software development when LMAX inverted the practice of writing software in a style that befitted humans, and instead wrote code that exploited characteristics of the hardware it ran upon. This talk makes the argument that our processes are software, our teams the platform, and our brains the hardware (wetware!) that runs it.

About Daniel Jones
Daniel Jones is CTO of UK Cloud Foundry consultancy EngineerBetter. He has recently been operating and supporting multiple production CF instances at a global wealth management enterprise, and helping an IoT tech startup build their platform atop CF. Daniel was a member of the Pivotal CF London Services team, and also worked with Europe's leading CF consultancy CloudCredo. Daniel has spoken at CF Summit Santa Clara 2016, CF Summit Berlin 2015 and the London PaaS User Group, as well as numerous video games industry conferences. He once even stormed the stage at a music festival to interrupt the performing act and challenge their questionable off-stage conduct!

Keynote: The Shift to a New Digital Allianz Germany - Dr. Daniel Poelchau, Allianz

The fast progress of digitalization is a challenge for Allianz Germany. Customers compare the value of products and services of their insurance companies to the intuitive offerings they are used to from other industries. Additionally, there is a growing number of Startups and InsurTechs shaping the market with innovative ideas and their aim to take possession of the customer interface. This means: in order to be still market leader in ten years, Allianz Germany needs to get digital by default and to be fully geared to customers’ needs and expectations of the digital age.

We recognized the necessity for a wide-ranging digital transformation at Allianz Germany and translated the key factors into our corporate strategy. Of course, two decisive factors are the shift towards a co-located and agile software development together with the implementation of an elastic Cloud Foundry infrastructure which offers easy scalability of successful products.

About Dr. Daniel Poelchau
Daniel Poelchau is currently Head of Digital Factory @ Allianz Germany, after having held various positons at Allianz Group since 2010. Before that Daniel spent 8 years with McKinsey.

Lessons Learnt Operating Multiple Cloud Foundry on OpenStack Deployments - Tyler Britten, IBM

According to OpenStack users survey, Cloud Foundry is the 2nd most popular workload on OpenStack. You want to deploy Cloud Foundry on OpenStack or already have. What's next?

Cloud Foundry continues to evolve, often with revolutionary changes, e.g move from bosh-micro to bosh-init, using the new eCPI, move to Diego etc. Same with OpenStack, e.g changes from Keystone v2 to v3, from Kilo to Mitaka, network plugins changes etc. Both IaaS and PaaS layers are changing frequently.

In this talk will discuss our lessons learnt operating hybrid Cloud Foundry deployments on top of OpenStack over the last years. We will discuss how we have used underlying technologies like BOSH, Ansible, Jenkins, Razor, Rally etc to seamlessly operate Cloud Foundry on OpenStack. We will also detail community tools to validate whether Cloud Foundry deployment will work on your OpenStack etc.

Leverage Existing Enterprise Data as Cloud Foundry Services - Robert Moss, Cloudsoft Corporation

Enterprises have a wealth of data in pre-existing databases, which are ripe for developers to create new and exciting applications. Currently developers have to contact the database admin and request a new user account and register it as a user-provided service. The Cloudsoft Service Broker Manager allows an administrator to add service definitions for creating users to its service broker quickly. This means that developers can securely access existing enterprise data as reliable Cloud Foundry managed services.

In this presentation, Robert Moss will demonstrate how to add new service definitions using a form-based user interface. He will show how to create a service definition that provides Read-Only access to pre-existing SQL databases.

Robert Moss
Robert Moss is a Senior Software Engineer at Cloudsoft Corporation the makers of Cloudsoft AMP. He leads Cloudsoft’s Cloud Foundry development efforts as the creator of the Apache Brooklyn Service Broker which is in Cloud Foundry Incubation; he is the instigator of the Apache Brooklyn client CLI; and has worked on Brooklyn supporting OASIS TOSCA blueprints. Robert has previously spoken at Cloud Foundry Summits in Santa Clara and Berlin.

Liberate Your CloudFoundry Installation From Being Constrained to a Single Cloud - Marcel Härry, Swisscom

Cloud Infrastructure components are here to fail, while your service – in our case cloud foundry as a platform running your workload – is here to stay available and keep the hosted applications alive. How do you stay available, while whole clouds are going down, either for maintenance or due to failure?

At Swisscom we think that cloud infrastructure should be kept as simple as possible, meaning that it is here to deliver a platform that enables rapid deployment of cloud-native workload, without lots of complexity.

In the end users would like that the platform to deploy and run their applications should stay alive and keep running their applications without interruptions.

To keep that promise while having individual parts (in our case whole stacks) failing, we didn’t delegate this problem to the infrastructure, but rather took it to the application level, meaning Cloud Foundry.

About Marcel Härry
Leading the architecture of Swisscom's elastic platform going from cloud infrastructure based on OpenStack up to a Platform as a Service running on CloudFoundry. Background in software engineering, but long time and mainly fixing and deploying stuff as a systems engineer and automation advocate.

Lightning Talk - IBM Bluemix - How an Internal Innovation Project Became the Biggest Cloud Foundry Service in the World - Simon Moser, Sr. Technical Staff Member and Dr. Max, Scientist, Architect, and Engineer, IBM

It's quite a story: in 2012, a bunch of developers in need of a platform where they can quickly push some applications without having to order infrastructure starting playing around with Cloud Foundry. A few years later, this project became commercially known as Bluemix, and with around 1 million users and hundreds of thousands running applications is probably the largest Cloud Foundry certified service in the world today. One reason for its popularity is Bluemix' great service ecosystem - which was fueled by technical contributions from and to the community and therefore serves as a great example how an open source community and a resulting service ecosystem impact each other.

Multi-DC Cloud Foundry: What, Why and How? - Daniel Jones, EngineerBetter & Colin Humphreys, Pivotal

What are the fundamental choices that need to be made when running Cloud Foundry in more than one data centre, and what tools can help operators deal with the compromises that CAP theorem enforces? In this talk Colin Humphreys details the deployment models of Cloud Foundry, and explains that whilst it’s possible to keep apps running and available in a multi-data centre deployment, operators face a compromise of increased operational overhead if they want to be able to continue changing the state of their PaaS in the event of an outage. Daniel Jones then shows some of the open source tooling that helps manage the operational complexity required by those wishing to operate a highly-available multi-data centre Cloud Foundry installation.

About Colin Humphreys
As CTO for Cloud at Pivotal, Colin Humphreys is responsible for the company’s big picture strategy and roadmap for our cloud platform offerings. Colin joins Pivotal from its acquisition of CloudCredo, where Colin was co-founder and CEO. Colin led the installation of the first SLA-driven production Cloud Foundry deployment, delivers tooling to the Cloud Foundry community, and is a regular conference speaker on PaaS-related topics. He also organises the London PaaS User Group, and is passionate about “Infrastructure as Code”, “Continuous Delivery”, “Devops”, and “Agile Testing”. Colin has spent the last 15 years sitting on the fence between development and operations, delivering solutions for eBay, Volkswagen, Paypal, Cineworld, and others.

NFS and Shared Filesystems as a Service - Julian Hjortshoj, Dell

Attach your NFS system to your Cloud Foundry apps! IBM, Pivotal, and EMC have partnered to extend Cloud Foundry to include filesystem-based storage services in the Cloud Foundry marketplace.

When people think of data services, they usually think of a web service, database, or other network service. But what about network attached storage? The new Volume Services API for service brokers allows apps to bind to network file systems just as they would to any other service.

This talk will give an overview of the new Volume Services feature, with a focus on the practical details you will need to get started with shared file systems in your applications, including a run-down of the service brokers and drivers available so far.

Not Only for Giants: The Minimal Reasonable Size of a Cloud Foundry Implementation - Juan Pablo Genovese, Altoros

Allstate, EMC, HP, IBM, GE... All of them are giants in their respective industries. Sometimes, it looks like Cloud Foundry is destined to only work for the big guys. The size of a typical deployment alone can be quite intimidating. However, there are very compelling reasons and very specific ways for a small/medium sized business to adopt Cloud Foundry as a cloud platform to manage their software products and implementations. In this presentation, Juan Pablo Genovese will demonstrate the smallest and cheapest possible way to deploy Cloud Foundry, achieving an affordable solution for in-house Cloud Foundry management. He will go over different IaaS options, a sample BOSH manifest, and how to make the most of Cloud Foundry for a small/medium sized company. This will help companies that think Cloud Foundry is "too complicated" to look at this awesome product in a different way.

OCI in CF: For Buildpacks, Security and Interoperability - Julz Friedman, IBM & Will Pragnell, Pivotal

The CF buildpacks workflow allows app developers to focus on the business logic of their code rather than the operational concerns of the OS that runs their code. At the same time, CF operators need confidence that all the code running in their org has been patched for the latest vulnerabilities. However, the current workflow does not currently support dynamically linked compiled languages well. This makes it very difficult to support apps written in C, haskell, et.al.; and also leaves us with a large difficult-to-protect surface area in our rootfs. We explore a solution to this problem using the new OCI container image specification, and demonstrate how this could result in a more flexible, more secure platform that supports better interoperability with the rest of the container ecosystem. For example, what if you could download your droplet and run it on any OCI container manager?

Pair Programming from 2,000 km Away: Strategies for Distributed Agile Teams - Jen Spinney, HPE

Cloud Foundry development is driven by several tenants, agile development, test-driven development and of course pair programming. Pair programming is seen as working best when the pairs are right next to each other working on the same computer in the same room, but what do you do when your pair is hundreds and perhaps thousands of miles away? The Diego team has several members who are not located in San Francisco, so remote pairing is part of our daily workflow. This talk will touch on the tools we use, the process we follow, and how we get the most out of a remote pairing situation. Andrew and Jennifer will also look at the drawbacks most often faced with remote teams and discuss a few strategies the we use to combat issues and to keep the remote team members engaged and productive and have a truly distributed agile development team.

About Jen Spinney
Jen Spinney is a software engineer at HP Enterprise, where she works as a core contributor on the CF Diego team. Prior to HPE, she worked at Microsoft on the OData team where she developed a passion for open source and cross-company software development. She pairs remotely from the HPE office in Seattle, WA.

Unik & Cloud Foundry Integration: Focus on IoT - Idit Levine, EMC

Unikernel – an executable image that can run natively on a hypervisor without the need for a separate operating system – are rapidly gaining momentum. To integrate unikernels into the echo-system, cloud-computing platforms as a service are required to provide unikernels with the same services they provide for constrainers. Here we present Unik, a open source orchestration system for unikernels. Unik handles the compilation of libraries and applications for running on verity of cloud providers, manages their scheduling, and ensures their health. To provide the user with a seamless PaaS experience, Unik is integrated as a backend to Cloud Foundry runtime.

In the session, I will demonstrate and dive in to the integration details and focus on how strong the combination of CF and Unik can play in the IoT world.

About Idit Levine
Idit Levine is the CTO for cloud management division at EMC and a member of its global CTO office. Her passion and expertise are focused on Management and Orchestration (M&O) over the entire stack and on microservice, cloud native apps and Platform as a Service. Unleash the Multi-Cloud with BOSH - Jatin Naik, Pivotal

Cloud operators want to be able to run and manage systems on a variety of cloud providers. Today Cloud Foundry’s BOSH only supports a single cloud provider for a given installation.

Introducing the BOSH meta CPI concept project which deploys multiple CPIs and allows a CPI to be chosen while deploying, giving operators the power to decide which IaaS is used for certain instance types and thus the ability to create a multi-cloud BOSH deployments. Uses cases for the meta CPI include deploying systems across multiple clouds, scaling from a private to a public cloud, running services on a particular IaaS that provides specialised hardware and executing errands in Garden containers.

Understand how to manage multi cloud deployments using a single BOSH installation and learn about the latency and network issues that arise.

Update on Cloud Foundry Isolation Segments (formerly Elastic Clusters) - Dieu Cao, Pivotal

Motivation: CF Operators want the ability to isolate workloads across separate networks, iaas’s, and datacenters to meet compliance, availability, and cost requirements. CF Operators expect to achieve this isolation without the added overhead of managing multiple full installs of Cloud Foundry.

Goal: The goal of this set of features is to enable the cloud controller to address workloads to isolated compute, routing, and logging components and assign application placement by mapping a Cloud Foundry Space to an Isolation Segment. We intend to support a new bosh deployment, a Cloud Foundry Isolation Segment, that may include compute, routing, and logging components. The cloud controller will have added functionality to allow operators to manage segments of CF capacity via the api.

About Dieu Cao
Dieu Cao is Director of Cloud Foundry Product Management at Pivotal focused on the strategic direction of Pivotal's Elastic Runtime product. | | She is also currently serving as the PMC Lead for the Cloud Foundry Foundation's Runtime PMC. | Prior to that, Dieu served as Product Manager at Greenplum working with Pivotal Labs on applications for use by data scientists.

25 million checked bags get delayed, damaged, or lost every year. Altoros has implemented an end-to-end solution, an RFID sensor-based baggage tracking system for airlines that minimizes the chance of baggage being mishandled. Powered by GE Predix and built in collaboration with mentors from General Electric, the application tracks the flow of bags inside and between airports. Passengers can see the location and status of their bags at every moment of their jorney. Benefits of the solution include:

- reduced costs
- improved customer experience
- descreased departure delays

The presentation includes: a live demo (end-to-end, from a baggage drop point to a baggage claim point) and an overview of architecture, business model, and pricing.

Using CF Route Services to Publish, Secure and Monitor APIs- Ed Anuff & Prashanth Subrahmanyam, Apigee

The new Route Services in Cloud Foundry 1.7 make it possible to for developers to do any sort of transformation or processing to requests before they reach an application. This new capability was designed with APIs in mind, and makes it easy to add security, authentication, and caching to requests. The Apigee team will walk through their experiences in building one of the first Service Brokers to leverage route services and will discuss how to build and deploy a full-featured API management platform as a route service and illustrate the use of Swagger/Open API to create a range of features such as quota enforcement, spike arrests and content caching. We'll also discuss the performance issues and provide some thoughts on how to best work around them.

What is "Serverless"? - Moderated by Kim Bannerman, IBM; Kenny Bastani, Ruben Orduz, Jason Kennedy, & Tyler Britten, IBM, Casey West & Kenny Bastani, Pivotal

We all have heard these "Serverless" or "NoOps" buzzwords lately. So, why do these matter? How does it affect Cloud Foundry? Are they affronts or sources of impulse for the platform and community and CF technology? Should CF take a stance or just let the buzz fizz?

The thrust and motivation of this panel is the increased (mis)use of buzzwords like "serverless" and "NoOps" floating around and how those tend to be conflated with other technologies like PaaS, CF, and other fast-deployment technologies.

Please note it's not supposed to be a critique or the merits of the technologies discussed. It's a constructive and educational panel on the nomenclature and messaging and how that impacts Cloud Foundry and the tech community at large.

About Kim Bannerman
Kim Bannerman leads the Technical Advocacy & Community team inside the Office of the CTO at IBM Blue Box. Kim has over a decade of experience in the tech industry working with enterprise customers. Prior to joining Blue Box, she was the Director of Evangelism Programs inside the ISV Partner Ecosystem at CenturyLink Cloud.

What is the Bits-Service? - Steffen Uhlig & Peter Goetz, IBM

Did you ever wonder what that mythical ‘bits-service’ incubation project is? Has the CloudFoundry community finally lost their minds and started on a competition with OpenStack Swift or Amazon S3? Hell NO! This talk will introduce the current state and give an outlook to the future of the bits-service project.

In short, the bits-service is an extraction of an existing functionality in the cloud controller today - externalising everything related to bits (application bits, droplets, packages, buildpacks, …) into a proper micro service. It can be scaled independently, is encapsulated by a well-defined API, so its a generic BLOBSTORE API, right? Mmm…. maybe come and join the team (the first community project equally staffed with engineers of IBM and Pivotal) in the talk and let us handle your bits!

About Peter Goetz
Bluemix Software Developer, IBM

About Steffen Uhlig
Steffen is a software developer, Ruby enthusiast, husband and proud father of two sons. In reverse priority order. He works for IBM's Bluemix organization and currently serves as the team anchor for the CloudFoundry bits-service project.

What’s New in Cloud Foundry Routing - Shannon Coen, Prashanth Subrahmanyam and Chris Piraino, Pivotal

Route Services: Until recently, developers were on their own to implement rate-limiting, authentication, and many request transformation functions offered by API gateway services. Route Services expand the use cases that can be fulfilled by Marketplace services, enabling developers managing apps on CF to inject a service into the request path, or dynamically configure a component already in the request path. User-provided services are also supported!

TCP Routing: Some developers would like to run workloads on Cloud Foundry that receive requests over TCP protocols other than http. Some developers would prefer to terminate TLS connections at the application. With support for TCP routing and multiple app ports, we enable these use case and more.

This session will provide an update from the Routing team, including demonstrations of some of these new features in CF Routing.

About Shannon Coen
Shannon Coen has been guiding core functionality in Cloud Foundry since joining VMWare in 2012. He stayed with the project when it moved to Pivotal, and served for three years as Product Manager with the Services team, launching the v2 broker API in 2013, the MySQL BOSH release as a reference implementation, and most of the subsequent enhancements including support for asynchronous operations in 2015. Since 2015 he has served as Product Manager for the Cloud Foundry Routing team. Shannon is a member of the CF Foundation PMC Council.

About Christopher Piraino
Chris Piraino has been a core contributor to Cloud Foundry for over 2 years. As a software engineer for Pivotal, Chris has previously working on the CLI and Cloud Controller API. For the past year, he has been working on the CF Routing team where he has been working on shipping new routing features, such as Route Services and TCP Routing.

When and Why Does Portability Matter? Exploring Multi-cloud, Open Source and Cloud Switching Costs - Dan Young, EngineerBetter

In a world without viable AWS alternatives and nascent levels of adoption, high cloud switching costs have been of secondary concern; productivity has always trumped portability. However as AWS usage and skills become more evenly distributed, the competitive advantage of early adopters begins to evaporate.

Barbara Liskov said ‘Modularity through abstraction is the way things get done’. With Cloud Foundry and BOSH we now have an abstraction layer that allows us to imagine IaaS providers as modular building blocks, or a competitive utility market.

In this talk Dan will examine the evidence that points to multi-cloud defining the next phase of competitive advantage and also explain how business leaders in 2016 can use this to make better economic choices regarding their investment in cloud platform skills and technology.

About Dan Young
Dan Young is CEO of the UK Cloud Foundry consultancy EngineerBetter, having worn a variety of hats over the last 15 years, spanning engineering, presales and product management. He’s been a Cloud Foundry enthusiast since 2012, long-term member of the London PaaS User Group meetup community and is also a Cloud Foundry Ambassador. His ongoing quest to understand and resolve organisational friction has led Dan to recognise PaaS as a helpful vehicle for changing things for the better. He has spoken at numerous industry events during his career, as well as LOPUG and CF Summit BOSH Day
