Cloud Native Application Bundles, cnab.io, is an open-source package format specification for managing distributed applications with a single installable file. With bundles you can reliably provision application resources in different environments, and manage their application lifecycle, without having to use multiple toolsets.
The Cloud Native Application Specification, CNAB 1.0, was just released. A collaborative effort between Microsoft, Docker, Pivotal, and others.
Carolyn Van Slyck, the co-creator of Porter, the friendly cloud installer that gives you building blocks to create CNAB bundles from your existing pipeline, will demonstrate real world bundles, answering common questions:
What is a bundle?
When are bundles useful?
Does this replace existing technology?
Why wouldn’t I just use helm, terraform, etc?

what
is
it
exactly
cloud
native
application,
bundles,
to
be
honest,
mean
person
early,
the
first
three
words
and
I
just
call
them
bundles
and
what
it
is.

It's
a
specification
for
allowing
you
to
take
your
combinative
application
and
package
it
up
into
a
single
file
and
people
to
distribute
it
and
work
with
it
and
hand
it
off
to
somebody
else
and
be
able
to
say
here.
I
made
this
wonderful
application
and
I
want
you
to
install
it.
In
short,
it's
a
club
installer
if
you're
anything
like
me,
you
heard
that
and
you're
like
boy.
Those
were
a
lot
of
words
and
I've
heard
before
cloud
native
distributed
applications.
But,
to
be
honest,
it
didn't
really
make
any
sense.

Seems
like
Microsoft
Posse:
it's
not
it's
a
specification
that
was
made
primarily
from
Microsoft,
docker
and
pivotal,
but
they're
also
a
bunch
of
other
companies
like
Intel
and
hashey
Corp
data
dog
and
the
rest
of
the
community.
You
don't
have
to
be
a
big
company
in
order
to
be
involved
and
we're
all
working
on
this
almost
for
a
year
now.

So
what
does
bundles
solve?
You
know
ever
since
docker
kind
of
came
about,
we
could've
got
a
handle
on
going.
We
have
our
application.
We
have
our
code
shown
inside
of
a
soccer
container
and
we
know
how
to
give
it
to
somebody
and
go
what
deploy
our
code,
but
we're
starting
to
realize
as
we've
operated.

This
in
production
is
that
there's
kind
of
this
gap
between
giving
someone
our
apps
code
and
what
it
really
takes
to
deploy
our
application
in
a
new
environment
and
we'd
like
to
be
able
to
do
a
docker
didn't
for
helping
what
container
says
essentially
for
shipping
and
working
with
your
apps
code.
Do
with
that
gap
of
deploying
everything
your
app
needs
to
be
able
to
put
into
a
new
environment,
so
I
say
app
a
lot
and
it
doesn't
really
matter
what
your
app
is,
but
let's
just
kind
of
step
back
and
make
an
example
application.

that
gap

So
when

about
an
app

something
that
it
has
some
code,
but
it
also
relies
on
a
little
bit
of
infrastructure,

infrastructure.
It's
the
Akuma
noise
cluster,
because
kubernetes
is
cool.
It
doesn't
have
to
be
Corelli's.
Okay,
so
I'm
gonna
have
my
app
is
going
to
flow
it
with
home,
say
that
go
on
to
a
cluster
and
use
terraform
to
handle
all
of
my
infrastructure.
So
it
could
be
a
late.

putting
some
CGI
with
CloudFlare,
maybe
I
need
a
cell
search.
It
really
doesn't
matter,
but
it's
what
I
kind
of
separate
like
I've
got
two
kind
of
concerns
here

they
need

work

with
some
kind

scripting,

works
with
Windows
too,

trying

environment

passively

clever

docker
container.
It
takes
everything
I
just
said,
and
it
puts
them
in
the
docker
container.
I
still
actually
can
solve
all
the
problem,
though,
because
I'm
probably
gonna
have
credentials.

my
identity
that
I
passed,
maybe
to
talk
to
the
Google
cloud
or
AWS
or
adder,
or
digital
ocean
and
I
need
to
maybe
pass
parameters.

localhost

has

first

supporting
it

didn't
write
the
new
person
on
the
team.

don't
really
they
just
work
on
the
app,

they
don't
do
the
infrastructure.
So
they
don't
really
know
how
to
use
terraform
did
they
get
all
these
calls
are
at
the
first
time.
What
do
they
mess
it
up
and
they
have
to
kind
of
read
Docs
and
figure
it
out
it?
Are
they
still
your
friend?
Oh,
my
gosh,
like
I,
don't
want
to
over
complicate
things,
but
these
are.
This
is
the
gap.

awkward
bit

we
were
able
to
put
our
code
inside
of
a
container,

we
made
that
part
super
easy,
but
there's
all
these
other
boats
that
are
still
kind
of
awkward

hard

the

seen
average

I'm

it

with

never
really

coordinate

across
a

bunch

services

not

separating

help
itself.
