Lightning Talk: Istio by Example - Josef Adersberger, QAware (Beginner Skill Level)

Istio is the cool new kid on the service mesh block: it can be deployed without the need for any change on the microservice-side and enhances their communication paths with encryption, resiliency, identity and access management, observability with metrics and traces and policy enforcement. In this lightning talk I'll talk you through an Istio sample application incorporating all major features. The sample will be released on github and will also run on minikube.

Hey I'm joseph and I'd like to talk about Easter today, so you first might ask why another is to talk, and my answer is- is to use a hyper right now and I think it's our job to ground this hype a little bit by bringing issue into practice and that's my job for today.

So what's behind east you, the reason why Easter is so attractive is that yeah, the current situation micro-services have to address a lot of cross-cutting concerns coming from the cloud native style and they can address those concerns by integrating libraries into the application itself. But this leads to a huge problem. It's you can call it library bloat.

So you have a lot of libraries integrated into your, not so micro-services application, then, and so the basically idea is to move those cross-cutting concerns out of the application side into the infrastructure side, and this is what SEO is all about to unburden those microservice applications of addressing those cloud native concerns.

So now, let's dig into is tu itself. The first thing to do is to install a coronaries cluster, I'm using docker sea edge. Right now. Have my local cluster running and next step is to deploy SEO and a small sample applications. So now let me Fake demo.

So the first thing is to set up Institute to download East you and to mount the binaries into the past. Half cube is your CTL available on the common line tool. Then you can deploy East EO on the cluster.

You have your ports running and then you a magic tool enhancing the cluster to auto sidecar, the pods, with a sto container to sidecar container and you label your namespaces to be auto sidecar with ezo, and the final step is to deploy the book in full sample application, and it's now up and running the sample application as well as sto, and the sample application is enhanced by Easter sidecars.

So the next thing is to I'm set up an observability stack on top of this year. This is also a little fake demo. Here. First, you have to deploy and expose Prometheus.

Then you deploy an expose graph on R. Now you can access the graph on a dashboard. Next step is to deploy and if K stack by deploying it and then exposing it cabana is accessible. The final step is to deploy Jaeger and now Jaeger is also available.

So now, let's see this a little bit in action. I've met with a tool called slapper, it's my most favorite tool, I discovered within the last 48 hours and it's a load generator and you can generate load on this sample application and when I switch over to graph on a board, I can see that the load is coming here and it's um it's already observability of your Jaeger UI. The traces here can see which are the slowest running requests and you can dig into those traces where the root causes are, and you also have your Cabana on board to analyze your locks. So now, let's get to an end by providing some samples how you can play around with this mysterious deck deployed right now.
