About Dirk
Dirk is VMware’s Chief Open Source Officer, leading the company’s Open Source Program Office, directing the efforts and strategy around use of and contribution to open source projects and driving common values and processes across the company for VMware’s interaction with the open source communities. Before joining VMware, Dirk spent almost 15 years as Intel’s Chief Linux and Open Source Technologist. Before that, among other roles, he worked as Chief Technology Officer of SuSE and Unix Architect of Deutsche Bank. Dirk has been an active developer and contributor in several dozen open source projects since the early 1990s, today most of his work is on the Subsurface dive log project and many of the related open source projects around that. He currently is a member of the Board of the Linux Foundation. Dirk holds a degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from the University of Würzburg, Germany. He lives in Portland, OR.

Good morning, this is always fun following a team like CERN who talk about a 14,000 ton, physics experiment, and then you get to talk about innovation. I'm, not sure how this is gonna measure up.

So I want to talk a little bit about this idea that I've discussed with a lot of you over the last few years, which is the difference between a an open-source project and be the innovation around an open-source project and what it takes to bring this into production, because we are not all CERN or we're, not all Google we're, not all the large, extremely competent and engineering heavy companies that will bring the they do, have the ability to take an upstream project and take it into production for most companies for most of our customers.

It is much more about having something that they can simply run and if it doesn't work, they have a company to go to and complain and get support. So what we have done last year, together with our friends at pivotal and in collaboration with Google, is we've taken a couple of these upstream projects and we've taken them into a product.

That is, hopefully, very easy to run and easy to deploy and allows the average company to run a cloud native environment in a way that's easy for them to bring up easy for them to maintain so we've taken. Obviously, this is all built around kubernetes we've taken a few other open-source projects like project Harbor, which is a VMware project for the registry and Bausch, which is a cloud foundry project and created, something that allows you to have a very easy day one.

So you can simply instantiate all of your infrastructure on one of many different ISS, whether it's vSphere or GCP, or azure, or AWS, or whatever and you're. You also have support for most of your activities as you continue to run this infrastructure. So what what usually is called a so the ability to upgrade all components: zero downtime, have it just work now: okay, I have five minutes total and spend two of these minutes to talk about something that looks like a product.

The rest of my time, I actually want to talk about what innovation is all about. Innovation is all about people, so there is four thousand of you roughly in this room and there's tens of thousands more out there.

Who are the people who really are creating the innovation, and this is something that is so easy to forget when we talk about the projects and the companies behind them, because innovation is done by individuals, and we brought some of the innovators from the ember' to be here and to be available to you in our booth throughout this week to simply have a chat.

If you want to talk about a harbor which I just mentioned, if you want to talk about something like ovn know, if you want to talk about surveillance, computing, dispatch or open fast, come to our booth, talk to the people behind it and learn what they are thinking about, open-source, what they are thinking about, the projects, how they are thinking about innovation, because we as a community can never forget that it's the individuals, the people who are contributing to this or what is behind all this.

But then, when we talk about us as a community, there is a topic that is really near and dear to my heart, and that is something where we are going and I'm not talking about. What's the next release of kubernetes I'm talking about this at a much more fundamental layer, I mean I'm totally blinded by the light here, but if I look out into this audience, one thing that I noticed is that a lot of you are pretty much looking like me and not trying to insult you. I'm sorry, I just mean a lot of.

You are white guys and we have a massive problem of lack of diversity in our communities in computer science in general, but especially in open source and whenever we have an environment that is as hot as exciting as fast growing as cloud native is right. Now we also have a huge opportunity and that opportunity is that there are more jobs and there are people to fill them, which means we have the opportunity to bring new people in this industry. A lot of us are talking about diversity, a lot about talking about. You know.

Okay, there is something we need to change. We have the chance to actually do something. It's because it's time to stop talking it's time to hire women hire minorities, it's time to promote them. It's trying to invest into them so.

A

So as much as I like to talk about the products of my employer, what a much more want to talk about is creating opportunities for a lot more people than the ones that are in this room. Thank you very much.
