About Dan
Dan is Executive Director of the Cloud Native Computing Foundation, which sustains and integrates open source technologies like Kubernetes and Prometheus. He also helped create and launch the Linux Foundation's Core Infrastructure Initiative as an industry-wide response to the security vulnerabilities demonstrated by Heartbleed. He previously served as CTO of several startups, including Spreemo, a healthcare marketplace, and Shopbeam, a shoppable ads company. Earlier, he was a general partner at Skymoon Ventures, a seed-stage venture capital firm that created startups in semiconductors and telecom infrastructure. Dan helped manage a number of telecoms firms controlled by Craig McCaw and started his career as founder and CEO of NetMarket, one of the first Internet companies. In 1994, he led the development of the first music store on the web, conducting the first secure commercial transaction after building the first web shopping cart. Dan lives in Manhattan with his wife and two sons.

director

the
cloud
native
computing
foundation
and
I'm
throat
to
get
to
toe
talk
to
you
for
a
little
while
about
the
cloud
native
landscape,
we're
handing
out
the
printed
version
of
it,
but
most
of
this
session
is
actually
going
to
cover
the
interactive
version
and
because
this
is
what
we
call
a
deep
dive.
I'm
gonna
go
ahead
and
show
you
how
the
application
itself
works.

It's
an
open
source
application
and
there
was
a
pull
request
that
was
created
yesterday
and
that
wasn't
able
to
deploy
because
of
a
bug
and
I'll
show
you
what
that
was
and
fix
it,
and
then
we
can
see
it
deploy
live.
Hopefully,
if
everything's
working
so
just
a
little
bit
of
context,
the
cloud
native
landscape.
We
started
it
a
little
over
18
months
ago,
and
the
positives
are
that
it
is
ubiquitous.
Essentially
no
article
or
blog
talks
about
the
cloud
native
ecosystem
without
referencing.

a
governing
board
member
a
couple
months
ago
mentioned
sending
it
to
two
different
people
that
day
to
illustrate
two
different
points
about
the
ecosystem
and
we're
actually
now
up
to
2500
stars.
So
it
shows
the
power
of
collaborative
editing,
the
Persian
we
put
together-
and
let
me
just
pop
this
up
here.
So
if
you
want

all
the
old

a

so
it
takes
a
bit
to

but
you
can
see
that
it's
just
so
much
simpler,
I
mean
that's
like
a
hundred
logos
on
it

from
the
ones
we're
handing
around.
You
can
see
that
we're
up
to
500
today,
which
is
just
utterly
insane,
but
the
great
thing
about
collaborative
editing
is
that
the
CNC
F
couldn't
have
come
up
with
every
single
project
that
was
missing.

have
people
raise
their
hand
and
complain.
Oh,
you
forgot
me
or
here's
this
thing
that
I've
heard
about,
or
you
should
look
into
this,
and
so
it
does
get
better
over
time.
Ok,
so
those
are
the
goods
the
negatives
to
it
are
that
it
makes
a
top
team
cloud
native
seem
harder
than
it
should
be.
So
there's
a
tyranny
of
choice
and
if
people
feel
like
they
have
to
evaluate
all
500
possible
options
in
order
to
start
doing
anything,
they'll
never
get
started.
There's
a
lack
of
prioritization,
the
small
logos.

I
think
you
can
agree
are
getting
very
pretty
hard
to
read
and
then,
when
you're
interested
in
learning
more
you
wind
up
googling
for
each
of
these
project
names
and
so
there's
a
lot
of
pretty
useful
information
that
almost
anyone
investigating
it
would
like
to
to
do
so.
Rather
than
and
I'll
tell
you,
people
have
referred
to
this,
as
I
mentioned
in
my
keynote
as
incredibly
useful.
Also
as
the
hellscape
and
I
did
have
very
serious
suggestions,
we
should
just
shut
it
down
and
stop
using
it
now.

First
of
all,
if
we
had
done
that,
it's
an
open
source
project,
almost
certainly
someone
would
have
picked
it
up
and
CN
CF
would
have
lost
the
ability
to
do
some
of
our
marketing
associated
with
it
to
promote
some
of
our
projects
as
part
of
it,
but
the
other
arguments
that
we
think
there's
some
genuine
value
there.
So
we
responded
in
two
ways:
one
was
to
create
this
cloud
native
trail
map,
and
this
is
the
much
simpler
version
if
you're
interested
in
working
with
cm
CF
projects.

Here's
the
process
that
you
can
go
through
that
makes
sense
and
I
do
want
to
say,
there's
a
genuine
disagreement
on
our.
Should
you
start
with
number
one
or
number
two
here
I
made
the
argument
yesterday
that
CI
CD
is
actually
the
most
valuable
most
important
part
of
a
lot
of
the
work
that
we're
doing
but
I
also
put
containerization
first,
because
if
you
don't
containerize,
first
I
believe
you're
going
to
wind
up,
throwing
away
a
lot
of
your
CI
CD
work
and
needing
to
start
again.
But
I
think
everybody
agrees.

But
you
don't
want
to
look
at
those
things
until
you're,
very
clear
on
orchestration,
ncic,
D
and
containerization,
and
then
this
other
step
is
one
that
you
probably
don't
want
to
skip
of,
observability
and
analysis,
and
so
thinking
about
Prometheus
for
monitoring
fluency
for
getting
Jaeger
and
open
tracing
for
tracing
solutions.
So
it's
definitely
not
trying
to
say
this
is
the
only
path
or
the
correct
path.

have
this
metaphor
on
the
pretty
small
print
at
the
bottom
of
the
landscape,
where
I
say
that
this
is
a
map
of
the
cloud
native
ecosystem
cloud
native
is
a
destination,
but
there
are
many
routes
to
get
there,
and
so
we're
trying
to
say
here
is:
oh,
this
is
one
route
along
the
way,
but
it's
definitely
not
the
only
one
and
to
make
that
really
explicit.
There
are
20

CF
projects,
I'm.

We
already
split
out
into
its
own,
so
I
don't
have
a
printout
of
that
one,
but
it
is
available
online,
and
this
is
the
service
landscape
which
we
actually
just
meaningfully
refactored
a
week
ago,
and
so
the
other
part
of
this
that's
nice
is
that
we
throw
things
out
there
and
we
get
feedback
and
say:
hey
I,
don't
quite
see
why
you
have
I
think
we
had
like
hybrid
platform
versus
kubernetes
native
platform
and
we
agreed.
Oh,
you
know
you're
right,
that's
not
the
most
useful
distinction.

instead
we
refactored
it
and
said:
there's
installable,
meaning
you
can
put
it
on
top
of
your
own
platform,
your
own
hardware
and
then
there's
hosted,
meaning
that
you're
paying
a
company
for
running
your
service
technologies.
And
then
we
have
the
tools,
the
security,
the
framework
and
I.
Guess.
I
just
have
to
do
this,
where
the
advantage
of
having
the
cloud
native
landscape
small
here
and
the.

Okay,
so
we
went
ahead
and
built
this
interactive
landscape
as
an
antidote
to
that,
and
since
this
is
the
deep
dive
I'll
just
give
you
a
little
bit
more
details.
This
is
genuinely
one
of
the
most
fun
projects.
I've
been
involved
in
in
years,
I
sort
of
had
a
conception
of
how
I
wanted
to
work
at
a
very
clear
conception,
actually
of
how
I
wanted
to
work
and
I
have
a
developer.

I've
worked
with
before
named
Andre
Kozlov
in
outside
of
Moscow,
and
we
just
had
this
relationship
where
I
was
able
to
put
together
some
issues
and
some
like
rough
drawings
and
go
to
sleep
and
I'd.
Wake
up
the
next
morning
and
he'd
have
mock-ups
of
it
and
then
I
could
mark
what
was
wrong
with
it
and
just
got
in
this
very
fast
iteration
loop.
That
was
a
ton
of
fun.

when
you
stare
at
this
thing
endlessly,
you
just
find
little
mistakes
and
changes
and
such
so
homepage
URL
repo
URL,
the
logo,
which
can
either
be
hosted
locally
or
it
can
fetch
it
remotely
and
a
crunchbase
entry
and
then,
as
part
of
a
compilation
step
it
fetches
all
the
information
caches.
All
of
the
logos
goes
off
to
CrunchBase
and
gets
all
that
information,
Yahoo,
Finance
and
finds
the
market
cap
and
then
produces
this
pretty
nice-looking
visual
interface,
and
the
idea
here
is
that
it's
a
react
application.
So
it's
extremely
dynamic,
but
it's
truly
service.

There's
no
server!
That's
connecting
to
the
entire
JSON,
with
all
the
information
is
being
downloaded
locally,
and
so,
if
I
switch
to
different
views,
open-source
by
age,
landscape
categories
open-source
by
stars,
it's
extremely
responsive
to
me,
because
everything
is
already
local
and
it's
just
in
memory
moving
stuff
around.
So
then
for
any
given
thing
like
open
source
by
age,
I
can
click
on
a
card
and
then
start
getting
some
useful
information
like
the
license.

category
it's
in
the
website,
the
repo
the
number
of
stars
and
post-race
is
a
cool
one
because
it
first
commits
was
22
years
ago.
So
it's
the
oldest
project
that
we're
tracking,
but
the
latest
commit
was
this
week
and
then
we
can
also
see
latest
tweet
and
such
and
then
I
can
flip
through
and
say
Maria
DB
and
my
sequel,
our
Forks
of
each
other.
So
they
have
the
same
start
date
and
then
start
seeing
some
of
the
oldest
projects
and
I
can
come
all
the
way
down.

we

project

year

half

work
out

well

a
project
that
we
just
called
demo
where
we
were
trying
to
show
multiple
different
applications
running
on
kubernetes,
using
linker
D,
using
Prometheus
for
monitoring
and
such
so,
but
first
of
all,
it's
hard
to
find
really
good
open
source
microservices
applications,
there's
less
of
them
than
you
think.

of
feel
today
it's
becoming
more
expected
that
they're
working
together,
and
so
it's
still
useful,
particularly
for
the
head,
but
there's
a
little
less
demand
for.

can

really
use
these
technologies
together.

enough
folks

doing
it
in
the
real
world
that
there's
more
confidence
around

is

source

gray
as
closed
source
and
that,

certain
circumstances,
you'd

contrail

another
one.
That's
about
to
be
renamed
to
tungsten
fabric
and
become
part
of
the
Linux
Foundation
networking.

aspects

how

to

software
development.

github
API
includes
an
option
to
see

latest
commit,

it
doesn't

option

find

first

had
to
do
a
binary
search
of
that.

can
be

to

times
up
to

cycles
of
fetching
in
order
to
find
the
very
first
commit.
But
then,
when
we
have
it,
we
catch
that
and
it's
fast
going
forward
and
I
mean
there's
genuinely
interesting
information.
If
you

sort

following
the
industry
closely,
like
Microsoft,
has
a
project
that
they
promoted
called
raft
that
they're
very
actively
promoting.
So
it's
2100,
stars
and
I
could
see
the
first
commit
was
a
year
ago
and
if
I
click
on
it
I
can
see.

that's,
copyright,
Engine,
Yard,
well,
Engine
Yard
was
the
parent
company
of
a
startup
called
Deus
that
microsoft,
azure,
acquired
and
so
saying.
Oh,
that's
interesting
draft
actually
started
at
Deus
and
then
came
with
it,
but
they
were
successful
enough
in
convincing
microfiber.
This
is
really
useful
and
then
it
kept
going
and
now
they've
open
sourced
it
and
are
promoting
it,
and
so
the

part,
is
actually
genuinely
fun
on
it.
I'll
just
mention
one
other
piece:
we're
getting
from
github,
where
you
can
see
that
we
say
license
MIT
and
so.

Github
runs
a
ruby
gem
called
licensee
on
the
code
to
look
for
fuzzy
matching
of
license
tax
and
then,
if
it
sees
it,
says
MIT
here,
but
a
ton
of
people,
particularly
oh.
So
if
you
start
a
project
new
on
github,
it
creates
an
option
say
what
license
you
want
to
use
and
puts
in
the
right
text.
In
your
set.
Four
people
have
older
projects.
They
often
don't
have
exactly
the
right
license
tax
or
they
put
in
a
special
copyright
or
something
else.
Licensee
doesn't
know
what
it
is.

I
have
an
intern
who's
going
through
each
of
our
projects
and
I
will
just
show
you
if
I
come
here
and
say
just
show
me
open
source
but
group,
it
just
sort
alphabetically,
but
group
it
by
license
and
I
can
see
that
almost
all

licenses
are
quite
small.

wasn't

designed

out
that
they're
crawling
robot
is
using
like
a
very
old
version
of
Chrome,
but
amazingly
because
we're
using
babel
to
transpile
all
the
information.
It
was
a
single
line,
change
to
say,
translate
everything
from
some
version
of
ekam
script,
7
to
6
or
whatever
it
was,
and
instantly
Google
was
able
to
fetch
it,
and
so
Google
is
fetching
this,
but
I
will
complain.

Google

can
take
responsibility
for
this,
that
on
my
crawl
stats
it.
So
we
have
a
sitemap
to
make
this
very
easy,
google's
fetching
the
sitemap
and
of
our
501
pages
that
we've
submitted,
which
is
the
home
page
plus
501
sumed.
In
pages,
it's
only
indexing
419
right
now,
but
what's
strange
is
of
the
images
it
says
that
it's
only
indexed
one
but
then
what's
neat
about
it
is
that
I
can
go
to
site
landscape,
dot,
CN
CF,
dot,
IO.

this
is
just
showing
the
own
on
pages.
It's
not
showing
me
images,
but
obviously
it
does
have
a
ton
of
these
images
and
I
will
say
that
I've
spent
way
too
much
time
searching
Google
to
find
high-res
SVG's
of
all
these
things,
and
it's
funny
that
now
often
when
I
check
it
just
shows
me
the
one
that's
already
on
my
site.

sign
of
success
and
my
aspiration
for
this

mean
it's
very
useful,
even
just
to
have
the
correct,
up-to-date
logo,
the
correct,
up-to-date,
Twitter
feed
for
all
these
projects
in
all
these
products,
and
so
my
aspiration
is
that
this
would
become
kind
of
a
standard
repository
for
all
that
well,
