linker
D
I'm
gonna
start
out
with
a
little
bit
of
just
baseline.
What's
the
service
mesh
then
go
in
kind
of
the
history
of
where
linker
D
came
from
and
we'll
skin
most
of
the
time
in
a
demo,
you
all
are
welcome
to
follow
along
I
promise.
You
only
have
to
run
two
commands
on
your
laptop
to
follow.
It
does
require
access
to
a
kubernetes
cluster.

So
if
you
have
access
online,
that's
probably
good.
You
can
I'm
gonna
be
running
it
locally
on
docker
for
Mac.
That
works
too
I.
Think
if
everyone
in
this
room
started
pulling
docker
images,
things
could
get
kind
of
weird,
so
we'll
see
how
it
goes
but
feel
free
to
follow
along
so
first
kind
of
a
little
background
on.
What's
the
surface
mesh
I'm
sure
you're
hearing
a
lot
about
it.
A
At
this
conference
probably
hear
about
linker
D
about
conduit
about
sto
service
meshes
are
usually
composed
of
two
components:
a
data
plane
that
sits
in
the
hot
path
and
manages
all
the
requests
and
a
control
plane.
That
kind
of
keeps
an
eye
on
on
the
data
plane
and
allows
you
to
set
routing
policy.
A
Today,
linker
D
is
going
to
be
running
as
a
daemon
set
so
running
once
per
node,
and
we
can
kind
of
get
in
later
on,
like
the
the
different
patterns
and
why
you
would
do
one
or
the
other
so
moving
along
now
we're
going
to
go
way
back
to
where
linker
D
came
from.
Some
of
you
may
know
this
story,
so
buoyant
was
founded
by
former
Twitter
infrastructure
engineers.
I
joined
Twitter
in
about
2010
the
site
was
crashing
every
day.
The
World
Cup
was
happening
every
time,
Brazil
scored
a
goal.
A
The
site
crashed,
we
were
probably
the
largest
rails
app
on
the
planet.
You
never
want
to
be
the
largest
of
anything
on
the
planet.
We
knew
we
had
to
decompose
this
thing
into
into
services,
so
we
kind
of
said
about
doing
that
and,
as
we
started
decomposing
this
this
giant
app
into
services,
we
realized
that
we
were
kind
of
reimplemented
the
same
things
in
all
of
our
services.
A
We
needed
to
deal
with
things
like
load,
balancing,
back-off,
failover
circuit,
braking
routing,
and
we
realized
that
that
kind
of
made
sense
to
put
it
in
a
library
and
that
was
kind
of
the
birth
of
finagle,
which
some
of
you
may
be
familiar
with.
It's
a
it's
a
library
written
in
Scala,
and
it's
really
the
core
technology
that
stabilized
Twitter.
As
we
moved
to
a
microservice
architecture.
A
It
worked
great.
We
really
saw
the
benefits
of
it.
The
the
drawback
was
being
a
library
it
needed.
You
know
you
had
to
be
writing
on
the
JVM,
probably
Java
or
Scala,
to
take
advantage
of
it.
We
kind
of
felt
like
this
is
technology
that,
like
everybody,
should
be
able
to
use,
and
that
was
really
the
inspiration
for
founding
buoyant
and
for
building
linker
d-link
rudy.
You
can
really
think
of
as
a
wrapper
and
like
a
configuration
layer
around
finagle.
A

You
know,
as
as
an
engineer,
I'm,
inherently
biased,
towards
like
adding
complexity
into
my
system
and
adding
especially
like
adding
an
extra
network
hop
between
every
micro
service
call,
there's
something
like
inherently
like
that
sounds
like
it's
going
to
make
things
slower
and
we're
going
to
show
in
the
demo
is
that
through
intelligent
load,
balancing
and
circuit
breaking,
and
all
that
we
can
make
your
network
faster
or
and
more
reliable,
so
I
mentioned
earlier.
The
workshop
requires
two
commands
to
run.
Here's
the
first
one
I'll
make
this'll
be
here.

I,
don't
expect
you
all
to
read
this,
but
what
I'm
gonna
do
is
I'm,
just
gonna
curl
a
ruminates
config
file
and
start
it
running
on
my
laptop
it'll,
take
about
a
minute
or
so
to
come
up.
If
any
of
you
are
doing,
this
yourself,
like
I,
said
there's
some
docker
images
that
I
have
cached
that
you
would
have
to
download,
so
it
would
take
a
little
longer.
A
So
let
me
give
you
a
picture
of
kind
of
what
we've
just
deployed.
We
basically
deployed
two
parallel
clusters.
One
with
link
rudy
is
a
daemon
set,
enabled
and
one
as
just
a
normal
load,
testing
application
using
round
robin
DNS,
and
what
you
can
see
on
the
the
right
side
is
a
cluster
of
ten
instances
of
the
same
app
and
some
of
those
instances
are
fast
and
some
are
slow
and
some
are
returning
500s
and
they're
kind
of
all
at
varying
behavior,
the
the
other
one.
A
The
baseline
is
just
doing
dumb
run
round
robin
DNS,
nothing
fancy,
so
those
are
kind
of
the
the
components
we've
got
in
there.
We've
got
what
we
call
a
slow-cooker,
it's
our
it's
a
little
low
tester
you're
welcome
to
try
it
it's
open
source.
It's
really
nice
for
like
running
very
long
load,
test
and
kind
of
evaluating
the
behavior
of
your
service
over
a
long
period
of
time
and
exposes
metrics
to
Prometheus
and
all
of
that.
A
So
in
addition
to
the
the
two
slow
cookers,
we've
got
a
link
Rd
in
there
and
we've
got
20
instances
of
our
back-end,
which
is
just
like
a
dumb
little
go
process
that
when
you
boot
it
up,
you
tell
it
like
how
much
latency
to
exhibit
or
how
much,
how
often
to
fail
like
20%
or
40%
or
whatever,
and
then
for
monitoring
you'll
see
in
a
minute.
We've
got
Prometheus
collecting
from
all
these
components
and
then
grief
on
it
to
show
it
in
a
dashboard.

So
the
second
command
in
the
whole
workshop
I'm
going
to
run
right
now
and
that's
gonna
open
just
a
port
to
Gravano.
So
we
can
see
what's
going
on.
Hopefully,
if
everything
work
it'll
come
up
and
you
can
see
like
pretty
plainly
that
we're
getting
almost
three
times
the
throughput
from
link
Rudy,
that
we
are
from
the
baseline
cluster.

Don't
expect
to
any
of
you
to
really
be
able
to
read
this
if
you're
on
your
laptop,
you
can
zoom
in
it's
on
the
bottom
in
the
middle,
but
what
this
is
showing
you
is
the
relative
load
between
all
of
your
instances
and
the
instances
that
are
healthy,
linker
T
is
favoring.
Those
it's
sending
like
most
of
its
traffic
to
the
healthiest
nodes.
A
The
nodes
that
are
unhealthy,
linker
D,
is
barely
talking
to
it's
actually
just
kind
of
poking
at
it
and
trying
and
seeing
if
some
of
these
nodes
are
becoming
healthy
again,
the
baseline
app
is
naively
just
distributing
load
across
all
the
instances.
So,
in
addition
to
getting
that
better
throughput
and
better
latency,
because
linker
D
is,
is
protocol
aware
you're
getting
better
success
rate
as
well.
A
So
when
crew
D
is
able
to
maintain
a
hundred
percent
success
rate
through
through
some
retry
mechanisms,
while
our
baseline
is
giving
us
90
percent,
so
that's
kind
of
the
punchline
of
like
you've
added
in
a
network
hop
between
all
of
your
requests
and
you've
gotten
much
better
throughput,
better
latency
and
better
success
rate.
So,
let's
kind
of
dig
into
like
what's
what's
really
going
on
in
this
in
this
demo,
so.

Here's
within
that
giant
mo
we
just
we
just
posted,
there's
a

or

in
there.
There
are
a
lot
of
knobs
and
settings
that
you
can
control
and
linker
D
in
the
the
repo
that
this
demo
lives
in
has
a
really
wide
variety
of
examples.
So,
if
you're
interested
in
exploring
like
go
into
this
repo,
it's
called
linker,
D
examples
and
you
get
you
can
get
a
ton
of
different
permutations
of
how
you
would
set
this
thing
up.

You
can
have
link
rudy,
listen
on
an
arbitrary
number
of
ports
on
on
an
arbitrary
like
protocol,
so
in
this
case
we've.
This
is
a
relatively
simple
configuration,
we're
listening
on
one
port
and
we're
just
doing
HTTP
one
traffic
and
what
we've
instructed
wrap
our
load.
Testers
to
do
is
to
hit
that
link
or
D
on
localhost
in
the
daemon
set
and
link
or
D
is,
is
routing
it
for
us
where
the
real
routing
happens.
Is
this
almost
DSL?
A
We
have
called
D
tabs
delegation
tables
and
that
has
its
roots
in
infinity,
and
this
again
you
see
this
is
like
one
line.
It's
basically
instructing
link
or
D
when
I
say
I
want
to
go
to
app
foo,
it's
just
gonna,
look
up
a
foo
and
kubernetes
find
it
and
route
it
for
you.
So
the
application
didn't
really
have
to
understand
that
it
was
talking
to
kubernetes
or
anything
it
just
like
gave
it
a
hostname
and
off
you
go.
We
have
some
users
that
build
these
tabs
that
are
like
hundreds
of
lines.

Little
farther
down,
we
get
into
sections
that
are
actually
making
this
thing
perform
better,
so
we've
enabled
a
response:
classifier
that
tells
linker
D
anytime.
It's
doing
a
get
request
and
it
hits
a
500.
It's
ok
to
retry
that,
depending
on
your
application,
you
may
never
want
to
retry
get
requests.
A
Moving
on
to
failure,
we
have
a
module
that
they
handle
circuit,
braking,
it's
called
failure
accrual
again.
All
of
this
stuff
has
its
roots
in
finagle
it
was.
It
was
developed
like
under
the
stress
of
trying
to
save
Twitter
at
the
time,
so
we've
configured
this
one
to
say
anytime.
The
success
rate
of
a
node
falls
below
90%
over
a
request
window
of
20
requests
back
off
for
a
constant
time
of
10
seconds
and
again
that's
configurable.

can
turn
all
kinds
of
knobs
here,
but
for
this
simple
demo,
this
is
how
we've
kind
of
configured
it
I'm
going
to
jump
into
a
couple
of
dashboards
just
to
demonstrate.
What's
going
on
I
know,
I
said
you
only
had
to
run
two
commands.
I'll
just
say:
views
are
optional,
but
we're
just
gonna
we're
just
gonna
peek
at
the
Prometheus
dashboard
and
the
link
or
D
dashboard.

So
this
is
like
a
nice
kind
of
new
user
interface.
If
you
boot,
link
ready
for
the
first
time
in
your
laptop,
you
want
to
make
sure
it's
working
you've,
probably
configured
an
admin
port
in
the
config
file.
You
can
go
right
to
this
page
and
you
get
a
live
stream
picture
of
the
requests
that
are
going
through.
This
particular
node
note,
if
you
have
like
a
10,
node
kubernetes
cluster
you're,
going
to
be
looking
at
one
node
at
a
time
here.

We
really
if
you're
interested
in
in
telemetry
for
across
your
whole
cluster
Prometheus,
is
great
for
something
like
that.
I
mentioned
earlier,
like
we
handle
routing
through
something
called
D
tabs.
So
let's
get
into
that
a
little
bit,
we
have
a
playground
that
allows
you
to
kind
of
play
and
poke
with
how
you're
affecting
your
routing
policy.
We
get
a
lot
of
questions.

have
a
public
slack
shout-out
to
that,
if
any
all
are
in
there,
where
people
ask
a
lot
of
questions
about
how
do
I
configure
my
routing
policy-
and
we
very
often
just
point
them
to
this
playground-
and
it
kind
of
allows
you
to
very
quickly
understand
like
how
routing
is
happening.
Let's
try
to
make
that
big
enough
to
read
so
what
I'm
telling
what
I'm
telling
it
now
is.

doing
here
is
kind
of
you
know
you
can
imagine
doing
like
a
slow
rollout.

instance.

the

I
figured
there'd
be
a
few
questions.
If
anybody
tried
to
get
the

questions

that

That
was
I
know
that
was
pretty
quick
but
I'm
open
to
talk
about
anything
you
all
want.
I
should
also
give
a
shout
out
to

just
probably

similar

may

seen
earlier,
and
this
was
a
little
more
fun
deeper
dive
and
my
coworker
Franz.
He
was
doing
a
conduit
demo.

Sure
that's
a
good
question,
so
the
question
was

hiding
all
of
this
failure.
How
would
we
know
what's
really
going
on?
So
that's
a
that's
a
good
question.
What
we're
seeing
here
in
this
Prometheus
dashboard
is
like
a
really
summarized
snapshot
of
all
the
metrics,
but
since
we
have
the
the
link
or
the
admin
dashboard
running,
if
I
can
remember
the
path
correctly,
we
can
see
all
of
the
metrics
that
it
is
exposing
to
Prometheus,
and
you
can
see
it's
it's
quite
a
bit.
A
These
metrics
here
will
give
you
like
information
about
your
load,
balancers
and
your
service
discovery
and
it'll.
Give
you
like
more
correct
success
rate,
especially
if
like
retries
are
happening
like
retries,
are
a
really
easy
way
to
masks,
mask
failure.
You
can
tell
from
here
and
through
more
like
flushed
out
dashboards,
what
failures
going
on.

You
get
a
little
bit
better
granularity
as
far
as
routing
policy,
if
you
have
something
deployed,
as
a
sidecar
and
kind
of
our
answer
to
that
is,
is
a
is
our
next
generation
service
mesh
called
conduit,
which
it
was
kind
of
a
rebuild
of
this
in
in
rust?
That,
rather
than
taking
up
you
know,
I'd
say
linker
dia
at
40,000.
Qps
probably
requires
about
a
gig
of
memory
to
run
like
to
run
it
at
like
really
good
performance.

Condor
requires
about
2
megabytes,
so
yeah,
but
you
know,
the
trade-off
is
that
linker
D
will
run
anywhere.
So,
if
you're
in
a
hybrid
environment,
you
know
this
is
a
better
solution
for
that,
if
you're
strictly
in
Crewe,
Burnett
ease
and
you're
willing
to
to
wait
a
few
months
through
our
beta
conduits,
a
good
choice.

In
the
financial
documentation,
there's
a
state
diagram
that
shows
the
states
that
link
or
D
goes
through
when
it
detects
something's
failing,
and
it
will
once
it
once
something
reaches
a
threshold
and
fails.
It
knocks
that
out
of
the
pool,
and
it
starts
probing
that
end
point
and
if
it
detects
that
it
becomes
healthy
again,
it
adds
it
back
into
the
pool.

I
think
what
we're
trying
to
do
with
conduit
is
to
make
it
as
simple
and
as
zero
config
as
possible.
So
if
you
come
to
our
booth
and
see
our
conduit
demo
or
you
you
go
to
one
of
our
conduit
talks,
you'll
see
that
you
can
configure
your
whole
kubernetes
cluster
with
conduit
in
like
two
commands.

know,
I
did
two
commands
here,
but
that
involve
like
a
giant
config
file
and
you
had
to
know
about
things
like
failover
and
and
circuit
breaking,
and
all
that
conduit.

Yeah
yeah,
that's
a
good
question,
so
the
question
was
like
the
demo,
we're
seeing
here,
linker
DS
kind
of
running
like
inside
your
cluster,
like
what
about
in
front
of
your
cluster,
where
you
would
typically
put
something
like
nginx,
you
can
run
a
linker
D
in
front
of
your
your
cluster.
You
probably
want
like
a
maybe
maybe
a
few
of
them,
but
it's
it's.
It's
well
designed
for
handling
like
high
traffic.

question
is:
does
it
replace
through
native
services
it
kind
of
does
it
depends
on
how
you've
configured
kubernetes
it
can
talk
to?
It
really
uses
endpoint
data
from
kubernetes
service
discovery,
so
we
usually
get
that
by
a
configured
kubernetes
service.
So
you're,
not
your
your
routing
isn't
taking
advantage
of
the
current
ID
services,
but
we're
using
like
the
selectors
that
you
specified
in
a
service
to
identify
what
those
things
are.

We
actually
have
an
open
issue
to
be
able
to
set
routing
based
on
like
just
a
label
selector,
so
that
you
would
not
have
to
define
a
service.
What
you
can
do
is
you
can
define
your
kubernetes
service
in
like
headless
mode
where
it's
it's
not
actually
set
up
to
like
do
any
routing
for
you.
It
just
provides
a
service
discovery,
information
to
enable
link,
ready.
