Keynote: Prometheus 2.0 – The Next Scale of Cloud Native Monitoring - Fabian Reinartz, Staff Software Engineer, CoreOS
In November 2017 Prometheus 2.0 was released. Along with several semantical improvements it got fitted with a new storage engine that addresses the new relatives of highly dynamic Cloud Native infrastructures. This talk will walk through the latest and greatest changes of the Prometheus's second big iteration. We explore the challenges of scaling a monitoring systems to dozens of millions of time series and how Prometheus 2.0 achieves performance improvements of up to two orders of magnitude.

yeah
today,
I
want
to
talk
to
you
about
the
work
we
did
as
the
Prometheus
team
over
the
last
one
1/2
for
almost
two
years
and
it's
about
prometheus
2,
and
so
we
have
done
a
lot
of
great
improvements
as
this
set.
But
first,
let's
take
a
look
at
where
we
are
was
Prometheus
today.
A
So
across
the
office
repositories,
we
are
counting
about
900
contributors,
I'm,
pretty
good
on
our
C
channel
there
about
eight
around
people
online
at
any
given
time
and
asking
questions
helping
each
other
and
we're
listening
about.
150
integrations
in
various
aspects
with
Prometheus
on
our
official
website.
But
the
extra
numbers
probably
way
higher
by
now
in
terms
of
adoption
and
github
stars
is
actually
the
closest
number.

We
have
to
track
that
and
as
we
don't
sort
of
have
any
insulation
tracking
and
but
it's
a
pretty
good
measure
roughly
and
to
estimate
how
well
prometheus
is
being
adapted
and
doing
and
based
on
that,
which
is
the
blue
line
here,
and
we
are
still
on
a
slightly
exponential
growth
slope.
So,
overall,
we
are
pretty
healthy
and
doing
well.

Instead
of
kinetise
and
as
soon
as
you've
scattered
reports
somewhere,
it
will
be
immediately
picked
up
and
monitored.
I
never
disappears
promises
first
in
Texas
as
well
yeah
in
the
following
year
and
may
we
joined
the
cloud
native
computing
foundation
as
a
second
project
after
kubernetes,
so
I
think
we
at
least
somewhat
shaped
the
term
cloud
native
in
the
early
days
there
and
they
turned
the
same
year.
A
And
then
we
kind
of
figured
that
people
want
to
go
further.
They
want
to
scale
out
from
easiest
and
we
wanted
to
give
them
the
means
to
explore
these
areas,
and
we
did
so
by
adding
remote
api's
which
allow
you
to
basically
stream
our
data
from
premises
into
any
other
system.
This
is
mostly
meant
for
long-term
storage
solutions,
but
it's
also
used
by
certain
vendors
to
basically
offer
customers
who
use
Prometheus
to
feed
data
into
their
back-end.
A
This
was
Pro
Matic
because
we
actually
were
already
on
our
custom
x
database,
because
all
the
other
open
source
solutions
were
not
quite
performed
enough,
so
the
only
other
option
was
essentially
okay,
let's
write
another
one
and
that's
what
we
started
doing
and
in
November
of
the
same
year.
So
six
months
ago
we
actually
released
this
s
Prometheus
2.
A
They
go
from
weeks
to
months
to
just
a
few
days
or
even
just
hours,
which
looks
fine
right
like
fewer
points
yeah,
but
of
course
your
total
computed
and
go
down
and
I
just
saw
spread
out
more
and
then
you
end
up
with
this
rather
sparse
picture.
Here
you
have
a
lot
of
with
short
time
series
and
you're,
adding
more
and
more.
Every
single
day,
so
promises
back
then
had
to
handle
about
10
million
times
use,
but
now
it
has
to
handle
a
billion
and
more
and
the
database
I
can
do.
A
So
we
all
the
new
on
and
essentially
what
we
had
to
do
was
we
needed
an
improved
way
to
index
and
address
time
series
in
the
database
and
to
make
Korea's
perform,
even
as
we
added
more
and
more
serious
overtime,
and
we
did
that
that
worked
nice.
But
we
also
made
some
other
big
improvements
and
along
virtually
our
performance
dimensions,
but
by
really
the
sort
of
squeezing
every
drop
out
of
it.
A
Yeah
and
by
the
end,
this
sort
of
times
he
was
database
library
and
could
hand
about
1
million
samples
per
second
per
CPU
core,
which
is
arguably
way
overshooting
or
goals
yeah.
But
it's
nice
to
know
that
you
can
do
this
and
what
was
quite
important
to
us
from
the
beginning
was
that
this
is
a
standalone
library
because
we're
getting
more
and
more
people
requesting
certain
one
of
features
that
are
perfectly
better
than
in
the
environment.
But
they
are
not
really
generally
applicable
and
we
cannot
add
API,
so
every
possible
use
case
to
Prometheus.

But
if
you
get
give
people
tools
in
their
hands
to
build
this
thing
themselves
and
share
them
with
the
community,
they
can
get
the
problem
addressed
without
I'm
having
to
wait
for
us.
So
this
TSV
library
and
comes
with
an
open
storage
format
and
was
a
really
easy
to
use
API.
That
people
can
then
use
to
build
custom
tooling.
A
Emmit,
okay,
so
the
next
step
was
integrating
this
into
Prometheus,
and
this
was
quite
a
problem
because
every
everything
changed,
and
we
also
noticed
that
now
that
we
had
the
theory
be
sufficient
and
every
others
of
aspect
of
promises
for
self
showing
up
in
the
performance
profiles
so
to
really
reap
all
these
performance
benefits.
We
had
to
basically
go
back
and
optimize
all
these
layers
as
well,
and
one
major
part
of
this
was
the
scrapping
there.
A
So
the
part
that
goes
out
and
Chloe's
new
data
points
from
your
services,
and
we
did
some
really
low
level
stuff
there,
based
on
the
text,
exposition
format
and
for
meteors,
and
for
the
time
being,
we
dropped
the
protobuf
support.
But
this
shouldn't
affect
any
users,
since
basically
all
I
be
suppose
so
benchmarks,
and
you
probably
wouldn't
know
how
this
all
worked
out
and
what
we
did
to
ensure
that
this
is
actually
on
track
of
what
we
wanted
to
do.
A

The
absolute
numbers
are
not
so
important
and
just
take
a
look
at
the
roughly
rough
shape
of
these
graphs
here
and
the
relationship
between
version
1
and
version
2,
and
this
year
is
about
memory.
Consumption
and
I
mean
quite
obviously,
you
can
see
that
Prometheus
2
in
the
bottom
is
doing
much
better
here
than
from
easiest
one,
and
but
almost
more
important
is
that
previous
one
sort
of
slowly
creeps
up
in
memory.
Consumption
then
levels
out
of
this,
and
that
makes
a
big
jump
again.
A
So
in
the
worst
case,
you
have
to
wait
two
to
four
weeks
before
I
actually
know
whether
the
resources
you
gave
to
your
premises,
server
are
sufficient
for
it
to
fulfill
its
task,
and
Prometheus,
too,
is
doing
much
better
here,
since
basically
it
tests,
like
everyone,
our
Walmart
time
and
then
jumps
to
its
baseline
and
then
stays
there
pretty
reliably
and
same,
goes
essentially
for
CPU
consumption
and
so
again
promises
to
do
much
much
better
here
in
the
bottom.
It
has
some
spikes.
A
Actually
it
was
pretty
bad.
So
in
these
benchmarks,
here
we
see
there
are
times
it's
fighting
up
to
100
megabytes
per
second
to
this
and
where,
as
promises
to
here,
is
barely
using
like
one
or
two
megabytes
per
second,
with
some
really
periodic
and
predictably
law
a
lot
of
spikes
and
the
most
surprising
thing
was
by
far
that
actually
promises
to
users
less
disk
space
as
a
central
impression
we're
using
in
either
version
is
exactly
the
same.
So
this
shouldn't
change
anything
and
but
turns
out
in
promises.
A
One
of
the
baseline
costs
in
terms
of
storage
for
a
single
time
series
is
quite
high
and
it
promises
to.
We
are
able
to
pack
this
together
where
you're
way
better
and
then
in
extreme
cases
like
this
benchmark
setup.
Here
you
can
see
performance
improvements
or
storage
savings
up
to
4x
and
the
last
thing
is
travel
agency.
That's
actually
the
original
costs
were
we
had
to
build
this
whole
thing
right.
After
certain
time,
service
became
this
very,
very
slow,
and-
and
here
we
can
see
the
promises-
one
behaves
affected
this
way.
A
So
it
starts
out
at
a
really
low,
latency
and
then
slowly
and
creeps
up
linearly.
As
we
add
more
and
more
serious
to
our
storage
and
promises
to
return
starts
out
at
the
same
latency,
so
they
have
the
same
baseline,
I,
guess
and
but
then
it
stays
there
and
doesn't
creep
up
over
time.
So
this
is
sort
of
the
core
coil
and
which
we
have
been
achieved.
A
So
in
any
way
we
kind
of
measured
it
and
held
it
from
easiest
to
is
doing
much
much
better
than
for
me
this
one.
So
this
is
really
good,
and
but
of
course
we
did
some
other
things
as
well,
because
we
had
this
opportunity
to
get
to
it,
get
rid
of
some
sort
of
as
there
things
in
prometheus,
because
we're
cutting
a
new
major
version
and
one
of
them
is
that
we
got
rid
of
our
custom
DSL
to
define
rules
like
alerting,
for
example,
and
simply
because
our
DSL
didn't
add
anything.
A
It
didn't
reduce
a
complexity,
it
didn't
increase
expressiveness,
and
so
we
just
figured
let's
go
was
yeah
Mel,
it's
great
anyway
and
well.
It's
just
must
use
it
much
easier
to
build
custom
templating
around
it
or
any
other
tools
really
instead
of
having
people
to
deal
with.
Yet
another
DSL
another
more
subtle
thing:
that's
probably
badly
noticeable,
but
really
really
important
is
stainless
handling.
And
so
one
problem
in
time.
Series
based
monitoring
is
that
you
don't
really
know
when
time
series
ends.
A
You
don't
know
whether
it's
actually
terminated
for
good
or
it
will
just
receive
another
sample
a
bit
later
and
what
you
usually
end
up
doing.
Is
you
define
a
timeout
that
sort
of
finds
a
good
middle
ground
between
latency
in
times
of
detection
and
with
false
positives,
but
thanks
to
promises
being
a
pull
based
system?
A
We
can
actually
at
this
great
time
and
if
you
encounter
an
error,
say:
okay,
all
time
series
you
have
seen
from
this
monitoring
target
before
let's
terminate
them
and
set
the
termination
marker
and
then
in
our
query
engine
when
we
encounters
a
determination
marker.
We
know
that
this
series
is
gone
for
good
and
not
waiting
for
another
sample
to
come
sooner
or
later,
and
this
makes
you
a
lot
more
responsive.

We
also
want
to
reinvestigate
the
FEC
and
for
our
API
s.
So
we
have
certainly
a
few
points
where
it
could
improve
performance
quite
a
bit
and
also
the
type
safety
is
quite
useful.
In
some
cases
the
remote
IP
I
said
I've
mentioned
before
they
are
officially
still
experimental,
even
though
people
are
using
them,
and
they
were
mostly
meant
to
figure
out
what
people
need,
what
people
want
these
api's
for,
and
so
the
next
step
is
okay.

Lastly,
we
want
to
stay
in
gauges
of
metrics,
which
is
sort
of
a
working
group
between
different
open-source
projects
and
windows
and
to
come
up
with
a
new
sort
of
monitoring
standard
and
and
as
soon
as
any
sort
of
standard
emerges
from
there
everyone's
adapters
as
soon
as
possible,
through
some
leaked.
By
a
good
example,
we
about
member
of
the
community-
and,
as
you
have
seen
this,
there
is
no
long-term
storage
on
this
roadmap
and
because
we
are
still
pretty
firm
on
this.
It's
not
a
problem
you
want
to
solve.
A
API
and
provides
I
think
even
from
crowd,
support
and
at
the
another.
Interesting
thing
is
Santos
we
just
not
based
on
the
remote
API,
but
instead
works
directly
on
this
new
and
promises,
2.0
storage
from
it
and
allows
to
cluster
different
promises
service
together
and
buy
a
sidecar.
So
if
we
want
them
so
much
and
I
really
sure
you
need
it,
and
you're
probably
want
to
look
at
one
of
those.

few
