remember

energy

really
really
inspiring
and
we've
we've
taken
that
energy
and
harness
that,
over
the
last
four
and
a
half
five
years
and
grown
our
event
to
a
community
event
as
well.
It's
grown
to
5,000
attendees.
We
have
10
tracks,
hundreds
of
speakers
and
programs
that
enable
connection
for
people
there.

way
I
said
this

kind
of
five
buckets
we'll
go
through
each
one

kind
of
just
things
that
I've
bundled
together
to
give
a
high
level

before

do

I

to
just
take
a
step
back
and
take
a
look
at
what
diversity
and
inclusion
means.
I
think
it's
important
to
set
this
context,
because
diversity
goes
beyond
the
gender
gap
in
our
industry.

can't
only
focus
on
that
and
by
the
way
this
I
pulled
this
from
the
recommended
speaker,
inclusion
course
offered
by

Khan.

there's

step

it's
really
important
that
when
you're
building
communities
and
experiences
you
don't
stop
at
gender.
You
think
about
the
broader
group.
You
are
serving
at
any
point
when
you're
planning
programs
take
a
step
back
and
think
about
who
you're
targeting
do
you
need
to
refocus?
Sometimes
you
do,
and
sometimes
you
don't.

with
one

my
first
learnings
to
share
with
you,
and
that
is
that
the
details
really
matter.
You
have
to
live
in
details
and
I.
Don't
know
if
I
already
explained
this,
but
sorry
there's
no
there's

order

just
groupings,
so
I
live
in
the
details.
I'm
quite
obsessed
with
details,
I
see
them
every
day
and
everything
that
we
do
and
it's
important
to
remember
that
when
we're
building
communities,
people
come
with
different
perspectives,
different
opinions,
different
backgrounds
and
experiences,
mostly
the
opinions
right
like
they
get
communicated
back.

my
kind
of
checklist
where
I
stop
and
audit
all
the
things
am
I
living
in
the
details
and
these
ones
one
one
good
start
and
that
could
go
beyond
for
you.

your
website.
What's
on

homepage,

are
you
trying
to
communicate
and
who
are
you
communicating
that
to
is
it
of
an
inclusive
perception
of
an
inclusive
event?
In
my
case,
I'll
tell
you
a
quick
story.

I,
probably
about
2015
I,
wanted
to
make
sure
that
our
speaker,
line-up
was
more
diverse,
so
I
started,
seeing
who
some
of
the
top
female
speakers
are
wearing
our
industry
and
I
reached
out
to
a
few
of
them
and
I
got
I
got
really
great
feedback
from
them.
They
said
you're
I've
heard
great
things
about
dr.
Cohn
I've
actually
been
to
a
dr.
Cohn,
but
I
went
to
your
website
and
it
doesn't
look
like
you
have
any
female
speakers
on
your
website.

So
maybe
this
isn't
the
event
for
me
to
speak
at,
and
that
was
that
was
really
cool.
I
mean
it
wasn't
a
cool
moment.
It
was,
it
was
kind
of
you
know
like
a
damn
you're,
absolutely
right.
It
was
a
wake-up
call.
But
from
that
moment
that
made
me
think
about
the
details
of
what
I
was
putting
out
there.

a
creative
thinker,
I'm
a
visual
thinker.
So
for
me,
I'm
always
unlike
really
a
like
visually
with
details,
so
I'm
sure
my
creative
agency,
like
loves
my
reviews
or,
like
oh
great
here,
we

we

provide
child
care
at

and
someone
tweeted
and
a
very
friendly
the
way
he
was.
He
was
joking,
but
it
took
it
very
seriously
and
he
said:

strollers
as
well.
So
I
actually
changed.

now
you
kind
of
have
an
idea
of
the
message
and
image
imagery
you
are
trying
to
communicate.
You've
done
your
audit,
maybe
it's
in
line
with
what
you
want,
and
maybe
you
have
some
tweaks.
So
what's
sorry,
what's
next
try
to
set
the
tone?
What
is
the
tone
of
your
community,
and
this
goes
beyond
in-person
events
like
what
are
your
forums
like
another
inspiring
thing
from
Nikita
and
Lucas's
talk
yesterday
was
like
how
easy
is
it
to
get
started?
Are
you
being
welcoming
for
people
new
to
your
product
company
brand?
Whatever
it
is
project?

easy
to
find
that
it's

contribution,
here's

you

get
started

this
community
and
I
think
that's
that's
something
really
easy
to
solve.
It's
also
important
to
remember.
I
learned
this
a
long
time
ago,
but
you
don't
control
it's
not
your
job
to
control
a
community
when
you're
building
it
it's
your
job
to
serve
that
community.

just
kind
of
the
essence
of
of
our
code
of
conduct
at
docker
that
I
helped
build
out
it's
on
github,
please.
If
you
need
to
reference
it
take
what
you
take
what
you
need,
but
this
is
very
simple
essence
of
what
it
is:
okay,
so
you've
kind
of
analyzed
your
community.
Alright,
sorry,
you've,
analyzed
your
the
things
you're
putting
out.
Now
you
can
start
analyzing,
who
is
in
your
community
who
you're
targeting
and
how
do
they
fit
into
your
big
picture?

So
for
us,
we
kind
of
have
to
two
major
segments
that
we
build
programs
out
for
it.
We
call
it
the
pincer
method:
the
top-down
and
the
bottoms
up
is
what
we're
taking
a
look
at
of
people
who
are
contributing
to
our
community.
The
top
are
18
decision-makers
they're
at
the
top
of
an
organization
filtering
things
down,
and
the
bottom
are
practitioners
evangelizing
and
pushing
you
know
whatever
it
is
decisions
upwards
in
the
organization.

So
when
you
break
these
down,
you
can
kind
of
analyze
who
you're
building
community
for
it's
one,
big
community,
but
you
can
also
break
it
up
into
other
segments
and
then,
after
you
have
those
segments
figure
it
out.
You
can
start
thinking
about
the
programs
that
you're
gonna
build
specifically
for
each
type
of
member.
That's
what
we
do.
We
split
them
into
two
you
may
have
another
practice
or
another
segmentation,
but
I
promise
that
a
healthy
community
can
contribute
to
each
one
of
these
business
lines.

Okay,
so
now
we're
obsessed
with
details,
you
understand
who
is
in
your
community
and
making
it
up
now
we
need
to
measure
everything.
This
is
a
great
great
thing
to
live.
I
know,
it
seems
simple,
like
we're
all
measuring
things
on
a
date
basis,
you
track.
You
know
how
your
product
release
cycles,
work
and
it
should
be
used
for
marketing
materials
and
events.

Sometimes
it
trickles
off
and
it
becomes
a
little
bit
harder
when
you're
talking
about
in-person
events,
but
there's
definitely
ways
to
track
so
I
the
contributors
one,
that's
a
good
way
to
start
like
if
you
have
a
healthy
and
inclusive
community,
that's
going
to
continue
to
go
up.
If,
like
we
talked
about
earlier,
if
your
numbers
are
stagnant,
maybe
people
don't
know
how
to
join
your
community.

So
people,
yes
and
the
food,
so
how
do
you
take
all
of
that
feedback
and
start
to
begin
to
figure
out
what
the
story
is?
What
are
you
trying
to
refine
so
for
me,
and
it
was
around
like
2016,
started
to
see
a
shift
in
why
people
come
to
come
Frances
or
our
conference.
At
least
it
became
less
about
like
going
to
talks
and
listening
to
content
presented
to
them,
and
it
came
became
more
about
a
way
to
network
we're
behind
our
desks
all
day.

You
know
with
our
kind
of
own
organizations
and
I
think
conferences
are
a
great
way
to
get
everyone
who's
working
together,
online
anyways
under
one
roof.
So
that's
really
what
conferences
become
for
me
anyways,
so
we
got
that
feedback
that
the
growing
need
was
to
network.
Then
I
started
to
see
comments
like
I
I'm,
a
little
shy,
I'm
I'm,
a
little
more
introverted
I
wish
there
was
a
way
to
connect
with
other
people.
So
putting
these
two
things
together,
we
started
to
form
programs
to
address
those
needs
and
address
that
feedback.

One
of
the
programs
was
hallway
track
and
what
hallway
track
is
is
a
platform
and
it
allows
attendees
to
post
what
they
want
to
learn
about
and
also
what
they
want
to
teach
others
about.
So
what
do
you?
What
do
you
want
to
share
and
by
creating
a
platform
it's
almost
like
it
gave
people
an
excuse
to
engage
with
each
other.
It
gave
people
a
reason
like.

Oh
I'm,
normally
shy,
but
the
conference
is
asking
me
to
do
a
hallway
check,
so
I
guess
I'll
meet
with
you
and
it
blossomed
into
this
really
beautiful
learning
and
sharing
moment
at
our
conferences.
It's
very
popular
people
take
full
advantage
of
it.
I
think
two
weeks
ago,
I
just
did
a
docker
con
two
weeks
ago
and
we
had
like
over
3,000
connections
made
between
attendees,
which
is
really
cool.
So
that's
the
intent
there
and
then
the
other
program
that
I'm
really
proud
of
is
we
created
a
program
called
docker,
pals
and
dr.

Powell's
comes
from
I
think
it
was
in
Austin
and
it
was
a
few
people
were
on
her
slack
forum
and
I
was
reading
it
and
they
were
like
hey.
Does
anyone
want
to
walk
home
after
the
party
at
night
like
I
need
a
buddy,
I'm
new
I?
Don't
know
the
city
I,
don't
know
anyone
at
this
conference
and
that
blossomed
into
I
think
it
was
like
a
50
person
reservation
at
a
at
a
dinner
one
night,
because
people
were
looking
for
other
people
to
connect
with.

So
what
doctor
pals
is
it
started
off
as
a
way
for
first-time
conference
attendees
to
feel
welcome,
like
I,
remember
my
first
conference
I
went
to
and
I
didn't
know
anyone
and
it
wasn't.
It
was
a
great
conference,
but
I
didn't
get
the
most
out
of
it,
because
I
didn't
have
that
people
connection.
So
I
put
this
program
in
place.
It's
grown
from
50
people
the
first
year
we
launched
it
I
think
in
Copenhagen.

Officially
and
in
two
weeks
ago,
in
San
Francisco,
we
had
over
550
people
sign
up
to
either
be
a
guide
to
someone
else
or
to
find
a
to
find
a
guy
and
be
of
help.
So
it
really
speaks
to
mentorship
as
well.
That's
what
that
forums
coming
to
and
I
I.
Don't
talk
enough
in
this
talk
about
mentorship.
In
our
communities,
but
it's
a
really
really
important
piece
and
that's
kind
of
my
next
step.

is
kind
of
my
my
own
lessons
learned
is
to
start
small.
It's
really
really
easy
to
get
inspired
to
grow
a
community,
and
you
know
want
to
do
all
the
things
and
want
to
fix
all
the
things,
because
there's
a
lot
of
things
to
fix,
there's
a
lot
of
things
to
work
on
when
it
comes
to
building
communities
but
start
small.
We
can't
boil
the
ocean,
so
it
takes
those
take
those
metrics
that
we've
found
take
the
details,
work
on
something
that
you
find
a
gap
in
and
build
a
program
build
something
test.

be
inclusive
and
he
wants
to
be
an
ally,

there

step

taking
a
lie?

a
really
good
question
and
preface
I'm
I'm,
not
a
diversity
and
inclusion,
expert
I,
don't
think
anyone
in
this
room
is
like
I
think
we're
all
still
trying
to
figure
out
what
the
formula
is
and
there's
there's
forums,
probably
for
it.

It
was
marketed
to
women.
It
wasn't
marketed
as
a
diversity
event,
but
if
some
male
wanted
to
come
in,
it
was
more
than
open
an
open
room,
but
whatever
invited
was
like
a
really
secure
place
for
people
to
voice
their
questions.
Current
concerns
comments
open
an
open
forum
because
with
other
women
now,
what
I've
also
heard
is
that
they
would
like
men
to
be
included.
So
they
understand
what's
going
on
their
opinions,
what
that
is
and
figure
out
how
we
can
form
communities
together
and
help
each
other.

lot
of
this
narrative
causes
people
to
assume
that
I
got
here,
because
I
had
a
hand
up
we're
all
here,
because
we
had
a
hand
up
we're
all
here,
because
somebody
taught
us
to
code
if
we
learn
by
ourself
somebody
inspired
us
to
learn.
Somebody
gave
us
a
computer.
We
are
all
here
because
we
got
stuff
and
what
we
want
to
think
about
is
who
is
not
here.
Who
should
be?
Why
are
women
always
like
excluded
from
history,
like
whoever
Dan
Kohn?
Did
that
keynote
and
like?

Why
is
it
that
the
famous
person
who
invented
stuff
that
we
don't
have
a
photo
of
it
happens
to
be
a
woman
right?
He
probably
did
a
lot
of
research
to
find
a
woman
to
mention,
and
not
because
those
women
weren't
part
of
history,
it's
that
they're,
not
in
the
media,
and
so
what,
if
you
reframe
it
to
be,
what
is
the
culture
I
want?
What
is
the
community
I
want?
Who
do
I
want
to
be
here,
you're,
not
supporting
them,
you're,
helping
yourself
and
so
I'd
sort
of
think
about
it.
That
way,.

have
a
completely
different
question
regarding
the
difference
between
existing
customers
and
those
guys
are
those
folks
that
you
would
like
to
attract
in
the
future
in
order
to
become
customers.
Do
you
have
any
advice,
or
any
experience
related
to
events,
how
to
make
them
specifically
attractive
for
people
that
are
not
yet
your
customers
or
your
users,
because
this
for
me,
for
example,
a
software
company
as
well,
we
are
doing
events
as
well.

is
a
particular
problem
for
me
in
any
event
that
we're
doing

for
us
again,
it
comes
back
to
communities
that
we're
building
within
those
segments.
One
great
community
within
itself
is
our
captain's
program,
the
our
abacus
there
are
advocates.
So
when
you
have
healthy
communities,
evangelizing
your
your
product,
because
it's
a
great
space
to
be
in
and
it's
a
great
company
to
contribute
to
that
energy
is
gonna
spread,
but
also
you
build
out
programs
for
them
to
help
right.

But
if
you
can
start
to
build
out
a
good
speaker
list
with
top-notch
content
and
again
it's
not
your
you're,
adding
women
to
your
roster
to
add
diversity
to
your
roster
like
there
are
very
smart
people
that
should
fit
an
agenda
that
you
want
to
do
so
start
there,
but
it
just
takes
a
lot
of
work
and
a
lot
of
one-offs
like
individual,
invites
tapping
into
other
groups.
Maybe
we've
had
a
lot
of
success.

Engaging
with
diversity
like
groups,
so
much
like
women,
new
code
or
Hulbert
in
school
is
a
great
one
in
our
area
in
San
Francisco,
so
engaging
with
those
other
groups
and
doing
cross-functional
things,
but
keeping
the
intent
of
teaching
and
learning
right.
So
it's
not
just
like.
Hey
women
who
code
come
to
our
office
because
we
need
more
women
in
the
Meetup
like
can
we
share
something
with
you
like?
Can
we
do
that?

I've
actually
started
a
really
interesting
thing
called
meet
up
mates
based
on
the
darker
Palace
program
for
the
London
community
scene,
because
I
go
pretty
much
everywhere
and
I
see
the
same
faces
everywhere,
but
sometimes
people
don't
know
how
to
attend
other
meetups
and,
as
you
said,
like
everybody's
trying
to
solve
the
same
problem.
So
if
you
don't
know
the
go
is
because
it
all
sounds
very,
that's.
That's
the
actual
problem,
I
think.

Sometimes
people
don't
want
to
go
because
they
feel
like
they
don't
belong
and
that's
something
that
we're
trying
to
solve
so
meetup
made
so
something
that
we
were
rolling
out
in
London
right
now.
It's
literally
started
a
few
weeks
back,
but
it's
it
is
literally
just
trying
to
find
the
right
people
to
go
with
and
say
like
look.

you
don't
know
anyone,
we
can
take
you
along
and
we
can
introduce
you
to
people
make
sure
everybody
feels
safe
and
included
like
not
based
on
gender
but
in
anything
like
some
there's,
always
a
reason
for
people
not
to
go
somewhere
so
and
if
you
just
keep
on
doing
that,
then
yeah
I
think
good
things
will
follow,
but
it's
just
you
know,
being
able
to
facilitate
and
just
make
sure
you
keep
on
doing
consistently.

at
some
point,
good
things
will
happen.
